Canine cop tackles gun toting teen
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 By MEGAN DeMARCO JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Jersey City police dog Froto once again assisted the police, this time by biting the ankle of an armed teen who robbed two women Monday night, cops said. Two males with T-shirts pulled over their faces approached a 21-year-old Jersey City woman at the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail station at Martin Luther King Drive and Virginia Avenue around 11:20 p.m., according to police reports. One of the males pointed a gun in her face and told her to give them her bag or he would shoot her, cops said. About a half an hour later, a 24-year-old Jersey City woman was approached by two males fitting the same description at Claremont and Garfield avenues, police said, and they demanded money at gun point. Police recognized one suspect, a 16-year-old Jersey City resident running on Cartaret Avenue, from the descriptions of both robberies, reports said. He was warned twice after turning onto Arlington that the police dog would bite him if he didn't stop running but he ignored both warnings, cops said. Police then released Froto, who ran after the juvenile and took him to the ground, reports said. Both victims were brought to the scene and positively identified the teen, police said. He was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a weapon and resisting arrest, cops said. Police said they spotted his accomplice running on Cartaret Avenue and he hid in a backyard; cops warned him that they had a police dog who would bite him and when he did not respond, Froto was released but the alleged robber jumped the fence into an adjoining backyard and took off, police said. The teen who was arrested was brought to the Jersey City Medical Center and then to the juvenile bureau, police said. Earlier this month, Froto, a German Shepherd, tackled a man running with a gun on Bramhall Avenue.
