Center for Family Health in Hoboken has sliding scale AND also "Charity Care" via Hoboken University Medical Center (used to be called St. Mary's).

Tell your friend to go to the Center for Family Health outpatient registrar, tell them it is emergency, have no insurance and either will pay on sliding scall or you will apply for charity care through Hoboken University Medical Center (can't apply before billing, only after). If they can't see him immediately, go straight to the ER at Hoboken University Hospital, they will see your friend, do whatever is necessary and then when he gets bill he goes back to apply for their charity care.

Dr. Abubakar on Central Avenue in the Heights charges $40 or $50 for a visit. He's a bit brusque, but efficient, and if you tell him you have no insurance, he will often give you sample prescriptions in enough quantity to get you well. The downside is, you have to get there early and sit in the office until he can see you (usually a good one to two hour wait). The office staff is nice. 452 Central Ave 201-222-0821. You don't have to be an established patient to be seen.

I also recently saw a CVS quick-clinic in Hoboken. It's the new CVS near the end of Washington, near 14th Street (sorry, don't know the exact address).

If your friend is very ill, though, don't hesitate to go to an emergency room. "Flu like symptoms" can mean many things and can be dangerous. HUMC in Hoboken is decent - avoid Christ if you can - JC Medical Center is just okay. A hospital must see you in the ER without an initial upfront charge. If your friend has no insurance, he or she can apply for charity care to eliminate the bill (if they qualify), or arrange a "payment option" with the hospital for charges.

I believe there is one on Garfield Ave near Communipaw Ave. Nice building. I had to drop a friend off.

Otherwise, you can try Dr. Medrano's office on the corner of Van Vorst Park (Jersey and York).

It is a private practice but he often takes charity cases because he knows many of the old timers and their families(but ask the office manager first - there's a form). He's there only part of the time so his clients line up outside.

The entrance is on the 1st floor on Jersey Ave.

Don't know of any in JC, but if you're friend is desperate there is a good one in Bayonne. You can get there by bus or maybe light rail. It's called the Bayonne Medi Center. I think it's on Kennedy Blvd. and something like 28th St. Call first to get the address, as I'm not sure.

I havent't been there in a few years, but it was always pretty good and professional. I don't know what a sliding scale is.

can anyone recommend an emergency/health care clinic in jc that has a sliding scale...a friend with no insurance and is really sick...severe flu-like symptoms...
