In regard to price, I wasn't making a general statement about realestate in Jersey CIty to Manhattan. I was talking about MY position. With a 22% increase to my rent in Jersey City, it is now > or = to living in manhattan. I don't want to get into details, but if i gave you the dollar amount, you'd understand what im talking about.

If your statement re Manhattan were even close to true, you and many others would vote with their feet. I doubt Downtown is more expensive than even Harlem, and that comparison leaves out the rest of JC.

So, why don't you feed your situation through the JCList victim/whiner detector by actually telling us your new rent, bedrooms, and sq footage.

I believe in New Jersey, a rent increase of about 10% is generally considered "unconscionable," though this is not by statute but by judicial rulings.

Your best bet is trying the JC Office of Landlord Tenant Relations at 30 Montgomery, (201) 547-5127. They'll be able to tell you if your apartment is subject to rent control laws.

Since Sept my entire building has been dealing with
significant issues with our heating & plumbing & and a follow-up building wide court case (Still pending). Thats the simple
version. We've learned that some of the tentant's
leases are up in January, Landlord has actually
allowed us to renew. (Much to our surprise)

We've been at this location for 4 years now, with
little event and the standard yearly rent increases
from 3%-6%.

Here comes the trick part, the increase in rent this year is 22%. Is this legal?
