Body ID'd as a city woman, 42
Thursday, July 26, 2007 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Friday's story in The Jersey Journal on the discovery of a badly decomposed body in Jersey City last week has made it possible for investigators to determine her identity, officials said yesterday. The body of Stephanie Ciemiecki, 42, was found in a field on Caven Point Road off Garfield Avenue on Tuesday last week by a woman who was walking her dog, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. After seeing the article about the discovery in the body, Ciemiecki's mother, who lives on Summit Avenue, contacted homicide investigators, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Pat Raviola said. The mother told investigators she last saw her daughter on July 13 in Journal Square, Raviola said. She said she feared the body found on Caven Point Road was her daughter, Raviola said. Homicide investigators then identified Ciemiecki using fingerprints, Raviola said. He would not say where investigators were able to get the second set of fingerprints for use comparing to those lifted from Ciemiecki's body. Homicide detectives believe Ciemiecki's body had been at the location where it was found for some time, DeFazio said. The woman walking her dog was pulled to a short hill running along the edge of the field and when she looked over it she saw Ciemiecki's body lying face down, DeFazio said. It was on several flattened cardboard boxes, apparently placed on the ground as a place to sleep, reports said. An autopsy was performed at the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark, but the cause of her death has not yet been determined, in part due to the difficulties presented by the degree of decomposition of the body. Anyone with information on the woman's death is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Homeless woman's decayed body found
Friday, July 20, 2007 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER The severely decayed body of a homeless woman was discovered in a field in Jersey City's Greenville section when a woman walking her dog was pulled to the location by her pet on Tuesday night, officials said. The body of the adult woman was found around 8:30 p.m. in an overgrown lot on Caven Point Road behind a Garfield Avenue gas station, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday. Homicide detectives think the body had been there a number of weeks, DeFazio said, adding that animals had mutilated the corpse. The woman walking her dog was pulled to a short hill running along the edge of the field and when she looked over it she saw the body lying face down, DeFazio said. The body was on several flattened cardboard boxes, apparently placed on the ground as a place to sleep, reports said. The woman said she first thought the body was a mannequin, DeFazio said, adding that when she got closer she became concerned and called the police. Yesterday there was still a rank odor at the location and flies buzzed around the area. The dead woman was wearing blue pants, white sneakers, a dark colored top and a pink bra, DeFazio said. Detectives found no identification at the scene and after her lonely death, she is now listed as Jane Doe, DeFazio said. Preliminary results of a postmortem performed at the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark was unable to establish the cause of the woman's death, DeFazio said. The prosecutor said no signs of trauma were found and her death does not appear to be a homicide at this point. Anyone with information on the woman's death or her identity is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.
