RNA - Volunteers Requested!
October 30, 2007

Can You Volunteer This Saturday?

RNA needs volunteers to work with us on the Fall Cleanup of historic Holland Street. Can you spare an hour or two to weed, pick up debris and put one of the few remaining cobblestone streets in Jersey City back in order?

Your Services Needed This Saturday
Date: This Saturday, Nov. 3rd
Time: 9AM - 2:30PM (approximate)
Where: Holland Street
(The cobblestone street to the North of Riverview-Fiske Park - at Palisade & Bowers Street)
Bring a good attitude and clothes that can get dirty. We'll supply tools, gloves and light refreshments.

Students from SAVE and Academy I Middle School will help us

RNA is not in this alone. The high school students from SAVE , a student organization focused on historic preservation, will join us as will students from Academy I Middle School.

This is an opportunity to meet your neighbors and improve your neighborhood. All are welcome.

Thank you and see you Saturday!

Making Progress
October 31, 2007

Our Legislators Are Stepping Up

Members of the RNA met with NJ State Senator Nicholas J. Sacco and Assemblyman Vincent Prieto on Friday, October 26th to discuss the dramatic need for NYC bus service along Palisade Avenue.

Sen. Sacco is the Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee while Assemblyman Prieto sits on the Transportation & Public Works Committee in the Assembly. This gives them both tremendous influence with NJ Transit and over mass transportation issues. And, they are our elected representatives!

As Easy as 123

Both Sen. Sacco and Assemblyman Prieto recognize the pressing need for bus service to be restored to Palisade Avenue and they are taking action.

On our behalf, they are reaching out to those who they think "can get it done" including senior executives at NJ Transit and NJ DOT. Meetings are starting to take place and our message is getting across.

Mayor Healy Pens Letter to NJ Transit & Legislators

Yesterday, Mayor Healy sent a letter to the Executive Director of NJ Transit asking for his assistance in this matter. The letter was copied to all Hudson County legislators, County Executive Tom DeGise, and Ward D Councilman Bill Gaughan.

None of this would have happened without your emails, phone calls and letters to our elected officials. Together, we all dramatically conveyed the need for NYC bus service along Palisade Ave.

While we do not yet have bus service restored, we now have the attention of our elected officials. Stay tuned and stay active!

Thank you for your continued support.

RNA - Bus Update/Meeting with Sen. Sacco This Friday
Wed 10/24/07 8:36 PM

Meeting Set with State Senator This Friday
October 24, 2007

Dear Neighbors,

This Friday, October 26, the RNA board will meet with State Senator Nicholas Sacco and Assemblyman Vincent Prieto about restoring NYC bus service to Palisade Avenue.

Sacco Chairs the Transportation Committee
RNA has doggedly pursued the meeting with State Senator Sacco and Assemblyman Prieto because of their leadership roles in the area of transportation in the Senate and Assembly.

Sen. Sacco is the Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee while Assemblyman Prieto sits on the Transportation & Public Works Committee in the Assembly. This gives them both tremendous influence with NJ Transit and over mass transportation issues. And, they are our elected representatives!

Our Goal - Get NYC Bus Service Restored to Palisade Ave
RNA will convey the dramatic need for reliable NYC bus service on Palisade Avenue and lobby them to be proactive on our neighborhood's behalf.
We will demonstrate, via careful financial analysis, that extending the NJ Transit 123 bus down Palisade Ave to Christ Hospital (or creating a new route to serve Palisade Ave) will be profitable and is critical to the economic and environmental health of our area.

We Can't Go This Alone
While the RNA board will meet with our elected officials on Friday, your help is still critical to restoring reliable NYC bus service to Palisade Ave. After the meeting we will require your vocal support to ensure that public transportation for Jersey City (and the Heights in particular) is a priority.

Mayor Healy Remains Quiet
While Mayor Healy issued a press release on September 12th in support of extending the 123 bus down Palisade Avenue (after appearing at the Sept. RNA meeting), he has not used his influence publicly to get it done. We will continue to entreat him to act on our behalf.

Thank you for your continued support. We will be in touch shortly after the meeting with the Senator Sacco and Assemblyman Prieto!

Mountain Road to Close to
Vehicles on July 16th

Mountain Road (also known as the bottom of Franklin Street/Hope Street) will be closed to vehicular traffic for approximately two months beginning on or about July 16 while the intersection is widened to accommodate the Cliffs condominium development. According to the traffic plans approved by the City, Mountain Road will remain open to pedestrians and bicycles with the exception of three to four days for road paving at the conclusion of this endeavor. Unlike the water main installation, vehicular traffic will not be allowed at any time (day or night).

During the work on the intersection, delays should be expected. Paterson Plank Road will be subject to lane closures . A detour will direct vehicles to take Paterson Plank north to Congress Street; Ravine Road/New York Ave is also an alternative.

342 Palisade Ave Receives Variances

The owner of 342 Palisade Avenue applied for variances from the Jersey City Zoning Board of Adjustment after his building permits were found to have been improperly granted by the Zoning Officer. The approval of the permits was the subject of an appeal brought by RNA Chair, Becky Hoffman, back in May.

342 Palisade required variances for its front and side yard setbacks as they do not conform to the zoning ordinance for Palisade Avenue. The zoning board approved the variances at its June meeting and they will be memorialized at its next meeting. The stop work order will be then be lifted and construction can resume.
Hoboken's Southwest Redevelopment Plan Delayed

A special meeting of the Hoboken Planning Board called for June 18th failed to get a quorum and had to be adjourned. The special meeting was called to determine whether the Southwest area of Hoboken is an "area in need of redevelopment."

Hoboken's original designation of this redevelopment area was overturned by the Courts for failure to properly swear in an expert and Hoboken was forced to begin the redevelopment process again. The area is controversial as the original plan included 12-story buildings and significantly less parkland than designated in Hoboken's master plan. Also proposed is a southward shift of Paterson Plank Road at the point where it crosses the Light Rail.

RNA members had voted against the original Plan (and it has not been changed as of yet) as the high rises will obstruct views and the additional buildings will only worsen the flooding, sewage and traffic problems that besiege this corner of Hoboken. The Planning Board meeting will be rescheduled.

Theodore Conrad Prize Awarded

Dickinson graduate Nitesh Patel is the 2007 winner of the Theodore Conrad Prize for High Achievement in History. Nitesh is president of the senior class, the Dickinson Law Society, the Technology Student Association, and the Dickinson Historical Society. He has been accepted by Cornell, Stevens Institute, Drexel University, and he will attend Rutgers University in the fall.

The Theodore Conrad Prize was established in 1998 by Barbara Petrick to honor the memory of Ted Conrad, distinguished local historian and a founding member of RNA. It is awarded each year to a Dickinson graduate who exhibits high achievement in history studies.
RNA Wants Your Input

Please join us at the July 10th meeting to discuss ideas for community activities and what you would like to see RNA work on in the community this coming year. We would welcome your participation in planning and bringing these ideas to fruition.

Dear JCList,

Tomorrow evening, May 17th, at 6:00PM, in the 14th Floor Conference Room of 30 Montgomery St., the Zoning Board will hear my personal appeal of approvals granted for projects on Palisade Avenue (R-2 Zoning District) that do not conform to the zoning. I would welcome your support by attending this meeting and letting others know about it.

The properties in question are 342, 347 and 349 Palisade Avenue. The issues are different but to give you an example, at 342 Palisade, the project was approved as a standard 2-family house with a garage/parking when the zoning calls for a 4-story attached townhouse. There is no parking permitted on lots with less than 50Ft (due to the nature of traffic on Palisade Ave). At 349 Palisade, the project required major site plan approval because it exceeds 5,000 Sq. Ft., yet none was required.

These inappropriate/illegal approvals need to stop. I hope you will come out and support me in this effort as the zoning officer's mistakes are affecting our neighborhood and all of Jersey City.

Do you want to brighten up the neighborhood and help the Riverview Neighborhood Association?

Spring Flower Bulb Fundraiser
It is time to think about your spring planting of flower bulbs! The Riverview Neighborhood Association is selling spring flower bulbs (plant in April/May and enjoy them this Spring/Summer) to raise money for the organization and to help you beautify your yard. Don't have a garden? No problem. Donate your order to RNA to plant along historic Holland Street.

Order by April 15th
A brochure and order form can be downloaded from Save The Palisades and by "Clicking Here". Deliver your forms before April 15th to C. Zuanich, 260 Ogden Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07307 or bring them to the next RNA meeting at 7:30PM on April 10th at the Harborview Health Center (corner of Ogden & Franklin).

Thank you so much!

Dear [redacted]

Two public meetings scheduled for this week are the final opportunity to provide your input to the Parks Master Plan draft before it goes before the City Council for approval.

WARD D Meeting
If you are concerned about Riverview Fiske Park , Leonard Gordon Park, or other parks in Ward D, this is the meeting for you. (This is the rescheduled meeting due to T&M Consulting's oversight of not attending the first Ward D meeting...)

Thursday, March 1 at 6:00PM -9PM at Public School 28, 167 Hancock Street (Between Bowers and South St)

WARD C Meeting
If you are concerned about Janet Moore Park, Pershing Field, Reservoir 3 or other Ward C parks - this is the meeting for you.

Tuesday, February 27th at 6PM - 9PM at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Community Center at Pershing Field.

Meetings are Open to residents of ANY Ward

While the meetings are set in each Ward, residents are free to speak about any park at any meeting - so do what is best for your schedule.

Please tell the City what you want for your parks. Thank you!

I note the Ward D connection, but out of curiosity, what are the borders of this neighborhood?

Just curious, didn't mean to hijack.

It's the area around Riverview Park (Fisk Park?), which is between Palisade and the cliff, from Bowers south to Griffith.

It's an interesting area, luring some shockingly affluent people (for the Heights) to some great housing stock with stunning views.
