They designate (yes!) abandoned houses with some information concerning the condition of the interior (floor out, roof out, etc) to warn firefighters in the event of a fire.

What is the deal with those red JCFD square signs with a number (usually the address) at the top and 2013 at the bottom posted on what appears abandoned houses?

I wish I would remember to take a photo to post along with this question, but I never do! They look to be about 12-18" square signs that are mostly red with white lettering which usually just says a few numbers...sometimes the numbers look they could pertain to a date or to pieces of the property address, but others don't have anything I could even venture to guess what the number combos could pertain to. Just curious as I am seeing them more and more often.

An X indicates no entry, on slash means enter with caution. RO means roof open, FO means floor open. Usually have the date posted and building number on them also.

They indicate to the fire department what the structural conditions are inside. The astute observer will notice the number is the address. F/O means floor out.

I thought too it had something to do with being condemned but then I saw one on the building on the corner of Ferry and Webster which looks like a newly (newer) renovated place with people living there. So maybe it is about the taxes. I was wondering the same thing. Glad someone asked.

I've been seeing them around the neighborhood lately. Red square signs posted on boarded up buildings, says F/O then some numbers like 401...one at Palisade and Hutton, a couple on Ogden.

Are these going to be developed? Or bank or government owned?

Just wondering if anyone knows what it means. Would love to see them improved!
