Jersey City officials alert owners of Sixth Street Embankment to 'crack' they say requires immediate attention

Published: Saturday, June 25, 2011, 12:45 AM
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

City officials alerted the owners of the Sixth Street Embankment yesterday that what appears to be ?structural damage? needs immediate attention, according to city officials.

The damage, a ?crack from top to bottom,? looks like it could have led to some stones falling to the ground, said city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

?City officials had the area secured to prohibit pedestrians and traffic in the area, and sent notice to the property owner to have it repaired,? Morrill said.

The city has been embroiled in a legal dispute for years about the Embankment, a 6.5-acre elevated parcel of land on Sixth Street owned by Steve and Victoria Hyman.

The Hymans want to develop the land, while city officials say they want to preserve it as open space.

A city official who asked not to be named described the damage discovered yesterday as ?no big deal.?

Apparent a stone had been out of position at the top for ages, and in traditional JC style, suddenly it became an emergency requiring cops, firemen and a cast of thousands in the most expensive manner possible. Will JC get reimbursed by the property owner? Stay tuned and don't hold your breath..........

Sorry, Coles and 6th (not 5th). They just tore down a block and offending tree from the top.

Trees have been growing atop the embankment and extending roots between many of the bluestone (?) blocks. I guess that there was concern over the stability of some of the blocks along the top row on 6th and Coles ~ they've just toppled one onto the ground and are now attempting to extricate some of the trees.

Not to worry as our ever faithful Historian is overseeing the operation.
