Nearly hour long power outage in heart of Downtown Jersey-City

Saturday, January 23, 2010
By PATRICK VILLANOVA
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Some 1,500 Downtown Jersey City residents were in the dark nearly an hour last night before service was restored about 6 p.m., said Claude Sikavi, a spokesman for PSE&G.

The power outage began in the vicinity of 275 Newark Ave. at 5:12 p.m. and affected residents on Newark Avenue, Montgomery Street around Center Street and all the way to Varick Street, Jersey City Fire Director Armando Roman said.

All street lights and traffic signals were out, creating gridlock in the area, Roman said.

Both Roman and Sikavi said the cause of the outage was not known last night, though Roman noted that it was not triggered by a transformer fire, which can often cause blackouts.

Took me 25 minutes to go from McGinley Square to VVP on Montgomery.

Avoid the area for now. No street lights and officers in dark uniforms and no reflective vests attempting to direct traffic... a bit of a cluster f***.
