Celebrations for Diwali, the festival of lights, are filling "India Square" in Jersey City

People of Indian heritage across Hudson County and throughout the world are celebrating Diwali - the festival of lights - this week.

The five-day festival, which many Hindu, Jain and Sikh adherents regard as the Indian equivalent of Christmas, got under way earlier this week and will continue through tomorrow, which marks the new year on the Hindu calendar.

Several stories from different regions of India form the origins of Diwali, but it is recognized in general as a celebration of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

In addition to attending temple services and presenting offerings to different deities, it is customary to gather with family and friends and partake in special sweets and snacks, said Harish Naik, president of the Hudson County Indian Association.

Celebrants usually also wear new clothing for Diwali.

Oil lamps are traditionally lighted, and Christmas lights are also widely used for decoration on the occasion, said Naik, a resident of North Bergen and father of two.

Newark Avenue from Kennedy Boulevard to Tonnelle Avenue, which is known as "India Square," was closed to traffic yesterday at 2 p.m. so a stage could be erected for a Diwali street party, said Rav Patel, president of the Newark Avenue Merchant's Association.

The festivities, which included a performance from popular singer Devang Patel and activities for children, was slated to run from 7 p.m. last night until 2 a.m., Patel said.
