This is so stupid. Towns have tried to make their own rules over and over and have gotten repeatedly slapped down in court. Bayonne tried to make their own rules and ended up shelling out $10k to cover the plaintiffs legal fees. The permit process rules are by the State, not the town or county.

You already go through a full background check as it is (complete with fingerprints). The last time I went through the process (just for an address change), the officer who runs it stated nobody who has gone through the permit process in Jersey City has ever been convicted of a gun crime (this was some years back).

Jersey City plans to appeal a court ruling that it veered outside of its authority when it devised gun permit applications that required ?substantially more? information than state law allows.

The information sought by the city includes license plate numbers, prior employers and waivers authorizing the release of ?any and all information? to police, information that is not required by state statute or by New Jersey State Police?s own application, an appeals court ruled.

?We do not conclude in this decision that Jersey City?s inquiries were unreasonable or made in bad faith,? reads the 21-page ruling, released Monday. ?However, the Legislature or the Superintendent of the State Police must authorize any requirement or condition for issuance of a handgun permit that goes beyond the terms of the statute and the State Police.?
