This reminds me of a [likely apocryphal] tale that circulated in England fifteen years ago when we were all shaking our heads at "those crazy Americans and their guns", anyway the story went thus:
Back then these new high-powered pump-action water pistols had just become popular, and there had been a spate of incidents in the USA (California?) where water pistol fights had got out of hand and led to fights escalating and real guns being pulled and shootings and murders occurring. The solution, of course - Ban the new high-powered water pistols! Robin.

Fulop allies say freeholder playing politics with new aide By A Jersey City freeholder who recently had a very public battle with Mayor Steve Fulop is raising eyebrows by hiring an aide who lives in Bergen County and works for the East Orange mayor. The mayor's allies say Freeholder Gerard Balmir, whose wife works for Senate President Stephen Sweeney, hired his new aide with one eye on the next gubernatorial race. Both Fulop and Sweeney are expected to seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 2017. "If you're a freeholder representing the third district, your resources should be here," said Jeff Dublin, the former freeholder Balmir unseated in 2014. "He just doesn't know enough Jersey City people." Read more: http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... ver_choice_of_freeho.html
