Jersey City?s promotion of 41 police officers will slash overtime costs for supervisors and save hundreds of thousands of dollars, Mayor Healy says
Published: Tuesday, June 07, 2011, 3:00 AM By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal Jersey City promoted 41 police officers last week, replenishing the supervisory ranks that city officials say have been depleted due to mass retirements in the past few years. The promotions of seven new captains, 14 new lieutenants and 20 new sergeants will save approximately $500,000 in overtime costs this summer alone, officials say. Police supervisors are required to work every shift, and the promotions will keep current supervisors from having to work overtime, a city official said. The 41 officers have agreed to forgo any salary increase for one year, Mayor Jerramiah Healy said in an e-mail. ?We are looking at every possible way to cut costs, and by slashing overtime we will save hundreds of thousands of dollars this year while adding extra protection for our citizens,? Healy said.
