Its the gas grills that get more attention, particularly on balconies. It's illegal to store the gas indoors, or even transport it through the building. That's a problem even if you have a rowhouse with no access to your yard other than through the house.
There's also some reg I don't recall about a minimum distance from the building.

The only problem that we had was that we put it out on our fire escape, and the fire inspector said we had to move it when he came for our regular inspection.
BBQs in the backyard should be ok as long as they're not blocking a fire exit or something.

Before I go and get myself a fine or worse... do residents need permits to have BBQs in this city? It would be on private property and a small charcoal grill...
