Jersey City man awaiting murder trial for nearly 7 years will wait some more

JERSEY CITY -- Anthony Shuler has spent more than six years behind bars since he was arrested on murder charges in 2010. His long-awaited trial could be delayed even more if a judge's order to remove his lawyer survives an appeal by the defense.

Shuler is charged with murdering Darren Edwards, 22, at Duncan and Olean avenues in Jersey City in June 2010. Shuler, who was 19 at the time of the shooting, faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted.

"This case is the oldest case in Hudson County involving a defendant in custody," according to court papers filed by the defense in December asking the Superior Court Appellate Division to hear an appeal aimed at reinstating attorney Mary Ciancimino as Shuler's lawyer.

GP - I read that in today's print JJ. The dopes have the wrong street. It did happen 2 blocks from Lincoln Park , but it was Duncan and Olean. Between Westside and Rt 440(1&9).

PS - if you guys are down that way very nice to see the last of the nasty Duncan projects being gutted.

I will never forget the story from a buddy of mine?s father. He was a cop in JC in the good...err bad old days. He was dispatched to the Duncan Projects for some kind of dispute. When he got there someone tossed a bathtub off of one of the roofs. It almost clipped him!!

Speaking of JC projects here?s another quick one for you new comers who missed all of the fun. There use to be big project towers up on the Boulevard at the Bayonne/JC boarder. A few of the buildings were real close to the Boulevard. You put your car?s and your life in harms way if you drove past them. The rocks and other projectiles would fly off of the roof tops at all times of the day. If the traffic light was red in front of the projects no cars would be stopped at the light. They would be stopped about a block away waiting for the light to turn green. They would then shoot past the projects at full speed.Thank God they are long gone!!.

Jersey City man is slain and another wounded as assailant opens fire at Duncan and Ocean avenues

A Jersey City man died Monday night after being shot multiple times two blocks from Lincoln Park and a second victim who was shot in the back during the attack remained hospitalized in stable condition yesterday, officials said.

Darren Edwards, 22, of the Holland Gardens public housing complex, was pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center at 10:15 p.m. after being shot 15 minutes earlier at Duncan and Ocean avenues, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday.

The second victim, a 21-year-old Jersey City man, remained hospitalized yesterday but doctors said his wound is not life threatening, DeFazio said.

The prosecutor said the victims were sitting on milk crates near a bodega when a gunman approached.

"Apparently, the actor approached from the east, opened fire, and the victims ran and then collapsed to the sidewalk," DeFazio said, adding that about eight shots were fired and the man who was killed was hit four times.

Homicide detectives have interviewed a number of witnesses in what DeFazio described as a "very active" investigation.

Security video footage may have captured portions of the crime. The victims were not robbed and no motive has been established, DeFazio said.

The preliminary autopsy report released yesterday afternoon revealed that Edwards was shot in the buttocks, left calf, left shoulder and right elbow, said Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory.

The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is homicide, Gregory said.

DeFazio said Edwards' murder did not appear to be related to an earlier 7:20 p.m. shooting on Martin Luther King Drive near Stevens Avenue in which a man was shot six times and suffered life-threatening wounds.

Edwards was in prison from Dec. 14, 2007 to July 2, 2008 and from Feb. 6, 2009 to July 28, 2009 for drug possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, corrections records said.

Anyone with information on this fatal shooting is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.
