Jersey City man awaiting murder trial for nearly 7 years will wait some moreBy JERSEY CITY -- Anthony Shuler has spent more than six years behind bars since he was arrested on murder charges in 2010. His long-awaited trial could be delayed even more if a judge's order to remove his lawyer survives an appeal by the defense. Shuler is charged with murdering Darren Edwards, 22, at Duncan and Olean avenues in Jersey City in June 2010. Shuler, who was 19 at the time of the shooting, faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted. "This case is the oldest case in Hudson County involving a defendant in custody," according to court papers filed by the defense in December asking the Superior Court Appellate Division to hear an appeal aimed at reinstating attorney Mary Ciancimino as Shuler's lawyer. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... al_in_jail_over_6_ye.html

Jersey City man is slain and another wounded as assailant opens fire at Duncan and Ocean avenues
Wednesday, June 30, 2010 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A Jersey City man died Monday night after being shot multiple times two blocks from Lincoln Park and a second victim who was shot in the back during the attack remained hospitalized in stable condition yesterday, officials said. Darren Edwards, 22, of the Holland Gardens public housing complex, was pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center at 10:15 p.m. after being shot 15 minutes earlier at Duncan and Ocean avenues, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday. The second victim, a 21-year-old Jersey City man, remained hospitalized yesterday but doctors said his wound is not life threatening, DeFazio said. The prosecutor said the victims were sitting on milk crates near a bodega when a gunman approached. "Apparently, the actor approached from the east, opened fire, and the victims ran and then collapsed to the sidewalk," DeFazio said, adding that about eight shots were fired and the man who was killed was hit four times. Homicide detectives have interviewed a number of witnesses in what DeFazio described as a "very active" investigation. Security video footage may have captured portions of the crime. The victims were not robbed and no motive has been established, DeFazio said. The preliminary autopsy report released yesterday afternoon revealed that Edwards was shot in the buttocks, left calf, left shoulder and right elbow, said Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is homicide, Gregory said. DeFazio said Edwards' murder did not appear to be related to an earlier 7:20 p.m. shooting on Martin Luther King Drive near Stevens Avenue in which a man was shot six times and suffered life-threatening wounds. Edwards was in prison from Dec. 14, 2007 to July 2, 2008 and from Feb. 6, 2009 to July 28, 2009 for drug possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, corrections records said. Anyone with information on this fatal shooting is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.
