Blaming this bar isn't much different than blaming the CVS on JFK for that cop being killed.

Human nature always find blame. Easy target is new bar, but real problem exist long time before Simon and Ms. May come to town. System problem, too easy blame software update. Reboot happy fun!

Exactly. I also live right by there. As a single woman, I am comfortable at this bar, which is a casual neighborhood pub. A "dress code" would be absurd there. This place is a very good business. They have been completely cooperative with the police, keep the place clean and are great neighbors. They cannot discriminate against whom they allow in, to a degree. And they do monitor loitering outside their doors, and keep the scene friendly and polite inside. There were not aware of their 1 employee's gang ties (she had a successful bartending career downtown in reputable places and wasn't some unknown in the industry). As soon as they learned of it, they told the police and terminated her.

Mr.Yang is a fine actor concerning his non-involvement in this issue. Simply have security and a dress and age code. If you really wanted to be proactive Mr. Yang. Thank you.

Jersey City bar says they are not responsible for recent West Side violence

Rashon Birchett, 26, is charged with a shooting on West Side Avenue on May 29.

Caitlin Mota | The Jersey Journal
June 19, 2016 at 7:04 PM

JERSEY CITY -- After two recent shootings on West Side Avenue, workers at a nearby bar are speaking out against criticism that their business is attracting violence to the neighborhood.

Simone Yang opened Halftime Bar and Grill last May. With help from his general manager James Barnett, the duo said they have created a diverse hangout between Duncan and Fairview Avenue.

But now they feel as though they are being blamed for two nights of violence that left one man dead and two others injured.

"We've definitely maintained a standard here," Barnett said.

Since the shootings, Halftime has voluntarily agreed to close at midnight on the weekends for a few weeks rather than 3 a.m. Barnett said they have also "moved out" some staff members they felt were not helping maintain the bar's policies.

Yang and Barnett said they have actually acted as "heroes" in the neighborhood because their surveillance cameras caught footage from both shootings. Barnett said their surveillance, along with help from some of the bar's employees, is responsible for at least three arrests related to the recent shootings.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office could not comment on the arrests or provide an update on the shootings because they are still under investigation.

No one has been arrested or charged with murder for the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old Bayonne man.

In the first 15 days of the month, at least 12 shootings were reported in Jersey City. Two people were killed, at least 10 were injured and police recovered at least eight guns.

While the two don't deny gang members may visit the bar, Barnett said he can't just tell people to leave based on the way they look because it would be discrimination.

"How can you determine who a gang member is or not? Because gang members aren't going to come up to you and say, 'Hey I'm a gang member,'" Barnett said.
