View Larger Map Corrections officer tells Jersey City cops her gun was stolen from safe in her home Saturday, November 06, 2010 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A Hudson County corrections officer's gun was stolen from her Jersey City home Thursday and there was disagreement between the victim and responding police officers about where the gun's empty holster was found, officials said. Officers responded to the Gifford Avenue residence just before 5 p.m. on a report of a burglary and while speaking to a resident, the 42-year-old corrections officer walked past them and to her second-floor room, reports said. She then told the officers her Smith & Wesson 9mm had been in its holster in the closet safe and that it was missing, reports said. The corrections officer said she walked into her room, saw the gun's holster on the floor and put it back in the safe, reports said. Two police officers who had been in the room said they had not seen a holster on the floor and that the safe door had been closed but unlocked, reports said. One of the police officers told the corrections officer "she should not have moved the holster before it was photographed," reports said. Inside the safe police found the holster, as well as "paperwork and jewelry that was not disturbed at all," reports said, adding that "the safe had no signs of being tampered with." On the first floor police found some items had been moved in a kitchen and they were able to get fingerprints, reports said. The name of the corrections officer was not released. Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
