Guilty plea in mortgage conspiracy

Thursday, February 26, 2009

An Oakland man has pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring with a Jersey City man and others in a mortgage fraud and money laundering scheme involving two-and three-family homes in Paterson, officials said.

Gerald Carti, 62, a former loan officer and shareholder of Pine Brook-based U.S. Mortgage Corp., pleaded guilty on Tuesday to wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, officials said.

A number of codefendants have already pleaded guilty and a trial is scheduled to begin on May 4 for several others, including Amer Mir, of Jersey City, officials said.

Carti admitted that he gave applications for mortgage loans for some of the properties to Mir, a loan officer at Jersey City-based United Home Mortgage Co., who allegedly demanded bribes from others to ensure the mortgage loans being sought were approved, officials said.

The alleged conspiracy involved securing no-downpayment loans for people who did not qualify for them, and selling them residential properties at inflated prices, officials said.
