Police say fatal Jersey City hit-and-run is solved: Union man charged

Gene "Bluejean" Hughes was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on July 29.

A 26-year-old Union man was arrested last night and charged with the vehicular homicide of a Bayonne musician and father of two who died after a hit-and-run collision in Jersey City in July.

Carlos M. Ortiz made his first court appearance today in connection to the July 29 crash in which Gene "Bluejean" Hughes, 47, was walking on Kennedy Boulevard when he was struck at Kennedy Boulevard and Bond Street just before midnight, officials said.

Hughes was pronounced dead the next day at the Jersey City Medical Center, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

Ortiz has also been charged with leaving the scene of fatal accident and his bail was set at $250,000 cash only by Superior Court Judge Fred Theemling, DeFazio said.

Hughes was a bass player and music producer, according to the Discogs website. He released several acid jazz, house recordings and re-mix recordings in the late 1980s and early 1990s under different aliases, including Bluejeans Regime and Rawthenticity, on various New York City record labels, the website say.

Three witnesses said Hughes was struck by a black Honda Ridgeline pickup truck traveling north on Kennedy Boulevard at 11:47 p.m., police said. Two witnesses said they heard a loud crash and saw the pickup -- containing a male driver and female passenger -- stop momentarily where Hughes lay before taking off, police said.

Today Jersey City Police Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach said the original description of the vehicle was incorrect.

He said the dogged and sophisticated investigation that followed included use of license plate readers, phone records and security video, which led cops to believe that Ortiz was driving a Cadillac Escalade pickup truck. The two SUVs are similar in appearance.

One break in the investigation was a security video clip showing a black Cadillac Escalade driving erratically a few blocks away moments before Hughes was struck, Nalbach said.

Police said it turned out to be the car Ortiz was driving, although it was not registered to him.

Hughes was survived by his wife of 14 years and two daughters, ages 12 and 13 at the time, both of whom attend Midtown Community School in Bayonne

Jersey City man assaulted cop who tried to break up his fight with woman, police say

A Jersey City man who was arguing with a woman early Sunday was charged with assaulting the police officer who responded to break up the fight and also resisted arrest, reports said.

Responding to a report of a man assaulting a woman at the corner of Logan and Wright avenues at 4:55 a.m., cops saw Carlos Ortiz, 25, of Franklin Street, holding a woman by her waist and neck, reports said.


Ortiz refused to release the woman and shoved the officer who attempted to separate them, then assumed a fighting stance and began to throw punches at the cop, reports said.

Police wrestled Ortiz to the ground and eventually handcuffed him, reports said.

Ortiz then refused to get into the patrol car, but ultimately complied, police said.

The woman declined medical attention and became uncooperative with police, reports said.

Woman shot dead on Logan Avenue in Jersey City, police seek her ID

"I woke up when I heard two or three gunshots and then I heard a thump that must have been the body falling," said a neighbor of the body found at Logan and Wright avenues at about 4:30 a.m. today.

The woman, who did not want her name used, said she's lived across the street from where the body was found for 20 years and has never seen trouble in the area before.

Police responding on a 911 call of shots being fired this morning found the "adult female," lying face down next to a garbage can and a locked gate at the front of an alleyway between two buildings, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. "In close proximity to the victim's hand was a crumpled $20 bill."

The woman had one gunshot wound to the back of her head and there was no exit wound but police have not yet determined the range at which the bullet was fired. No spent shells were found at the scene. She had no wallet, purse or identification on her.

"We are interviewing individuals that may have some information but at this point there is no suspect," said DeFazio, adding that the motive of the murder has not yet been determined but said the investigation is at a very preliminary stage. "Our first priority is identification of the victim."

The prosecutor also said an autopsy on the victim should be completed later today and that may provide additional information, especial if the bullet if recovered from her head.
