Bullet grazes face of basketball spectator
Thursday, August 27, 2009 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A man watching an outdoor basketball game in Jersey City was grazed by a bullet just above his left eye Tuesday night, officials said. The 51-year-old man from Silver Springs, Md., suffered the wound at 9:21 p.m. while standing outside the fence of the courts in Lena Edwards Park at Johnston Avenue and Pine Street, reports said. The basketball game was part of a tournament organized by Team Walker. Cops responding to the shooting found the man sitting on the street between two parked cars, conscious but bleeding heavily, reports said. The victim said he was watching the game when he heard a gunshot and realized he was hit, reports said. A witness told police she saw a group of people on the northeast corner of the basketball courts running away, but did not hear a gunshot, perhaps due to the loud music at the event. Police did not find any spent shell casings, reports said. The victim was taken by ambulance to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. Team Walker was founded in 1996 by Jersey City natives Jerry and Jasper Walker to provide after-school activities for city youth. Police are investigating the incident.
