Cops: Do 4 'muggers' have dirtier hands?

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Jersey City police arrested four men they caught attempting to rob a man Monday night and are investigating if the four are connected to a string of robberies and burglaries in the Journal Square area, police said.

Around 10 p.m. at a red light at Cottage Street, plainclothes officers in an unmarked car noticed a man with a backpack running from four men, police said.

Police followed the four men, and when a call came in over the radio about an attempted robbery, police stopped them in front of the Loew's Theatre, reports said.

The man who was running was brought to the Square and he identified the four men as the posse who tried to mug him, reports said.

Police arrested Carlos Espinoza, 20, of Manhattan Avenue, Jersey City; Kevin Gomez, 18, of Broadway, Jersey City; Noel Nieves, 21, of Newark; and a 15-year-old Jersey City boy, reports said.

Police are investigating if the group is connected to a string of burglaries and robberies in the area, reports said.
