Wow, these guys are on the ball!

Your Google Maps problem report has been reviewed, and you were right!

"For this route, you should turn left on 8th St. and follow the pedestrian passageway through the Newport Mall and the office building behind it, to get to the PATH station. There is a protected 24 hour, 7 day pedestrian right-of-way through the mall that keeps walkers from having to go all the way around the mall on 6th St. People walking the opposite way, from the PATH into the Hamilton Park neighborhood, can also use the same pedestrian walkway."

We'll update the map soon and email you when you can see the change.
Thanks for helping us to improve Google Maps!

New! This email was sent because you clicked "Report a Problem" on Google Maps. We thought you should know that you can now edit the map yourself, on Google Map Maker.

We have a protected pedestrian-right-of-way allowing us 24 hour passage through the mall and Newport office tower to the PATH station on Washington Blv. This route is handicap friendly and available to all.

You can also use the 'map maker' at the bottom to recommend the location of the 'trail' through the mall. They review those was well.

Went on Gmaps and reported it. Didn't know you could do that. Thanks.

Problem: Google Maps is sending Newport PATH bound pedestrians from the Hamilton Park area three blocks out of their way around the mall to reach the station. Same for our in-bound friends.

This is an unnecessary and tedious route for visitors and guests looking to visit our city, also for those who want to find a PATH station on their way to Manhattan.

Solution: Let Google Maps know there's a problem. Click the "Report a problem" button on the bottom right of the Google Maps screen linked below.

Tell them we have a protected pedestrian-right-of-way allowing us 24 hour passage through the mall and Newport office tower to the PATH station on Washington Blv. This route is handicap friendly and available to all.

Here is an example map: Hamilton Park to Newport PATH

Google says they welcome user input about things they missed, like pedestrian passageways. It looks like they are adding these items to their indoor mapping initiative (malls, airports, etc.). So perhaps we won't have to tell our friends to ignore the online directions someday.

btw...I can't find any web info to cite about the Newport right-of-passage the old timers fought so hard for back in the '80s. Any suggestions? Perhaps someone could update the Newport Center Mall Wikipedia page...
