Re: 245 Newark Avenue - Fire Alarms in the middle of the night

Again last night at 2am, 245 Newark Ave fire alarm went off.
This time the JCFD was very efficient, they turned it off just after 10 minutes or so. Seriously hope the builder is getting charged. I know he got fined a bunch for all the other rules he didn't follow in the construction of the building, so he might not care...but JC needs to collect.

245 Newark Avenue - Fire Alarms in the middle of the night

Last night the new building that has entry on 1st and Newark ave at Coles (245 Newark Avenue) had its massive fire alarm going off again. This is probably 5th time where the fire department had to come to simply turn off their faulty alarm system. The alarm was going off for at least 25 minutes. In the past, I've watched as the fire department has to use the ladder to find an open window to enter the building.

This building has had many problems with its delays, I'm wondering if they have to pay fines for when the Fire Department comes out, as it seems like such a waste of city money.

Hoping the managers are reading this and thinking about ways they can be better neighbors. When renters move in soon, it will be really annoying if they have to exit their building in the middle of the night once a month.

I'm surprised that this venue is allowed given how it is surrounded by all residential. I can't imagine the neighbors from the bathhouse to the residences on Columbus are going to be happy about this? Did it have to receive any approvals? Must have missed that.

Are there any solutions to catching the idiots lighting fireworks all week? Seems they like to do them late at night which makes sleeping difficult. First one I heard a few weeks ago I mistaken for a gun shoot.

I hear them around Monmouth and 1st

My car was parked on 1st street and monmouth. I had the window open on the passenger side and was away from it for 5 minutes. They took my iphone and gps. I know it was stupid to have the window open...but it was 5 minutes.

This was last friday.

Join us in Fixing the PATH (Directly reply to join)

Not too shy to talk

I think its clear to us all now that the Path issues of the past few years are here to stay--unless we do something about it.

While Jersey City is experiencing a major growth spurt and finally coming again into its own...the PATH is working hard to undue all the work that the community has put into improving JC.

I'm reaching out to propose a community group focused on
FIXING the PATH. See below some initial ideas.

If you are interested in helping me start this community group, please directly reply and I'll email everyone. We can then organize a meeting somewhere in DTJC.

Some of the ideas I would propose include:

1. Providing Consistent Reliable Service

-Port Authority telling us once and for all what the signal and equipment problems are and what they are doing to fix them in the long-run.

-Considering other route options like Express service from main departure hubs to main arrival hubs (Express from JSQ to 33, or Grove to 33, etc). These could be particularly useful during delays

2. Better communication

-Their tweets and alerts are well after the fact.
-Not all people use technology--can the red jacket folks come out of the station and put up a sign that says the path is delayed?

3. Long-term improvements

-Jersey City is growing. On its way to be the largest city in New Jersey. What is the PATH doing about planning for this? More trains, more staff?

Dear DTJC

What can we do to organize to fix the path? This is completely unacceptable. I feel like we have no voice against the Port Authority. For years the service didn't have problems like this. But for the past 3 years its been worse than most other NY area lines.

Can we convene a meeting? Can JC Gov help us?

So Many of you have told me to call JCIA directly...and have given me this advice based on your experience. I did this and they eventually came.

But, isn't it sad/unfortunate/poorly managed that we all know this number by heart? I can count at least 10 times in the past year when I had to call it. And it seems I'm not alone.

I've lived in Jersey City for 6 years. I recycle about half of things I put out on the curb. Over the years I throw out lots of recycling because i just don't have the capacity to hold onto it for one week. Where to store the stuff?

Today, JCIA didn't pick up my recycling, which means I'm stuck with an impossible amount of recycling. I've called them but their phone is down.

I guess I'll just throw everything away.

A1 Deli needs a location

Given all the chatter about Pizzatown, I figured I would let folks know that one of the only true Sandwich places is closing soon.
A1 Deli has a 4 star rating on Yelp with 46 reviews.

I suggest one of the many not so well to do delis on Newark, offer up their space to A1.

Seriously, could we have more bad delis on Newark Ave?

Its super frustrating! i have the same problem.
What I've found is that 1/2 is more favored by most places then .5

I wonder if we could change it to A or B. thats the only long-run solution, I've ever considered.

Hey in all serious though, I saw the cops actually tell one of the homeless guys that lives outside of the Box restaurant to move the other day. I was very surprised as and pleased to see this.

I don't see how some of the businesses like the Box will survive with a gang of homeless people living next door. I know it stops me from wanting to walk on that side of the street.

did some new rule come about?

Thank you for sharing this story. I think many of us feel harrassed, uncomfortable, and maybe just tired of the growing homeless population. We do need to find a solution for them as well as for improving DTJC.

I'll email you seperately as I find JClist not a place for solutions.

I called the police on a panhandler last night outside of Paradise Grocery on newark near coles. The homeless beggars have multiplied and gotten very aggressive recently. Generally I cross the street to avoid them, it has gotten so I have to cross newark back and forth 3-4 times walking from Grove to Coles, there are so many.

This particular one was a tall, somewhat skinny black man who looks like he his totally out of his head. I think he may be the same man who walked into Grove Street Bistro, walked up behind me, and put his arm around me/hand on my butt about a month ago - same out of his head look as that guy. In that previous case, I was clearly with a date and the man kept staring straight at me for the next 10 minutes at which point we left.

Last night this man stared at me non stop while was sitting on the bench outside the store and was watching where I was going. Normally I tried to ignore him but he was just super creepy and I felt like he was going to come after me. To the point where I went home, put my purse down, and went into Paradise Grocery to complain to them - I have lived there 4 years and for at least 3 they tolerate a begging bum on their doorstep - the sidewalk outside the business is the responsibility of the business owner, and if they were telling the begger to leave and calling the cops instead of letting them hang around there, they would not be there every single day. The people working in Paradise Grocery (who I know are not the owner) were trying to say there is nothing I can do. Meantime the crazy homeless man followed me into Paradise Grocery and stood there continuing to stare at me from the doorway until I started getting really mad. Then this same homeless guy asks me for money when I left at which point I screamed at him to stop f-ing staring at me. So what does he do, but continue to stare at me. It is not just the looking, that guy is whacked so far out of his head he does not even know where he is. I called the police.

The police non-emergency number said if people complain they can assign a patrol to a targeted problem spot.

Newark ave off of grove is a problem spot.
I have complained to the staff at McDonald's before telling them I am not buying anything from there because of the bums outside that live on their steps. That was a few years ago, and they said they give the bums leftover food.

Also, there is a black guy with a long beard that sits on the bench outside the bank of america on Newark near Jersey Ave. He has some mental issue and will beg for money and yell foul curses at you (and this is with just walking by/not looking at him/pretending he's not there). I had two women who I think were prostitutes harassing me for money the other night, not just 'can i have money' but going on and on so I ran across the street. Then there is the couple, the lady who lives in the shopping cart whose homeless boyfriend pushes her around. They don't usually ask for money but have moved in to the block around Helen's Pizza, they seem to live there in one particular spot at night.

The normal homeless man who is usually outside paradise deli for the last three years isn't aggressive but after three years I get tired of being begged for money by the same person on the same spot which no one ever does anything about.

They filmed Mercy the tv show at Lucky 7 a few years ago, and there were like six cops standing around doing nothing guarding that, while they ignore the beggar around the corner. Same thing when Snooki was living in town, it took six cops to stand around to guard Snooki's truck all day and all night, when those six cops walking around could remove the beggars who harass people.

Anyway I am sick and tired of the escalating homeless aggressive panhandler issue. The grafitti tags have also gotten bad. I would like to just move to a better area, but the rents have gone up a lot and it's going to be some time before I can afford to move, if ever.

In the meantime I just want to walk home in peace and safety and be left alone. I also had a different black man than all of the above, this one with dreadlocks who did not ask me for money but stared at me non-stop and followed me for four blocks regardless of my repeated turns and change in directions trying to get rid of him, he was trying to follow me home. This stuff is creeping me out. I feel like I'm going to get mugged or otherwise attacked one of these days going home, and I am not going home late. I'm talking about 6-9pm on a weekday.

And you may not think grafitti is not a big deal, but when you live in a walk-up, as in no doorman/no security, building, and you come outside in the morning and there are fresh grafitti tags on your building door, you know people were at your building messing with the door in the night. Repeatedly. Every block is covered in grafitti paint lately and the building owners aren't cleaning it. I don't know what the police can even do about that, I guess the city could fine landlords for not removing it, but that's about it. I just feel like when the landlord doesn't clean the grafitti of the building front door then that sends a signal to whoever is coming in the middle of the night to paint it that no one is watching the building and that it could be open to being broken into.

This is why we need stop and frisk. Please stop and frisk me, I have nothing to hide. Unless you have something to hide, you shouldn't have to worry. How is it that two people on the train both have guns! this is insane.

Ambulances/Police at Newark Ave @ Coles -Sat 3am Anyone see it?

Not too shy to talk

Sorry to have to repost, but I would like to get more information on this.

On Saturday morning, Aug 10, (late friday night) 3am we woke up to sirens and witnessed 2 ambulances, 1 police car.

The ambulance took someone away on a stretcher (not in a hurry), so either they were ok or completely not. The crowd around the activity was very large and disturbing the peace with shouting. It seemed that it was likely the crowd coming out of Jordan's Lounge upon closing.

One man said something about these young people getting out of hand.

Would be interested in more details as NJ.com and others sources haven't reported on it.

Thanks

Petition to close Jordan's Lounge

More police activity last night near Jordan's Lounge.

At 3am, we witnessed 2 ambulances, 1 police car.
The ambulance took someone away on a stretcher (not in a hurry), so either they were ok or completely not. The crowd was again very large and disturbing the peace.

This is the 3rd incident on this block since July 27. So while Fulop has locked up 111 people in JC, Downtown is witnessing more dangerous activity.

I will be looking into the process for petitioning to shutdown Jordan's Lounge. Please stay tuned for details soon.

Anyone with experience with JC City Hall, appreciate your support.

Thanks

Re: Shooting on Newark Ave - Miss Saigon parking lot?

I'm new to this particular block. I use to live closer to Grove, so I wasn't familiar with Jordan's Lounge. Now I realize the shots were probably attributable to the lounge crowd after it closed.

On Wednesday night (1:20-1:45am) there was lots of loud noise and dancing in the parking lot outside of the lounge. I was really surprised that Jersey City police didn't stop it immediately. I wouldn't think that loiter outside of a bar like that would be allowed at the Beer Garden or on Grove Street.

Anyway, I called the cops that night and they did arrive to clear the scene.

Anyone in the area that would like to work with me to reduce this disturbance, please get in touch. I've already discussed working with my neighbor to at least petition for a patrol at closing each night. Seems like a logical solution.
