take picture evidence and mail in a request for a court date. you'll probably win and get the ticket tossed out, but chances are that the city will now go back and add a sign to that block.

none, unless you - the homeowner- are living there as an extension of your apartment on another floor (i believe). for example, i dont know if it's legal for you to just occupy the basement and rent out the top 2 floors, but it should be legal for you to live on the 1st fl and the basement.

you're going to have to get 1 bedroom in a 3 BR place in order for that to work

Re: 07306 or 07304

another thing to consider is what area of NYC you're commuting to. if your wife works around midtown or above, it's actually much easier to take a bus into the city from the heights. there is regular bus service on JFK blvd into new york city; in the mornings the buses (a combination of chartered vans and NJ transit buses) run every 5-10 mins, and drop you off at the port authority bus terminal in about 20-25 mins total (depending on traffic).

st ann's on JFK blvd (near congress st) and st nicholas (on central ave and ferry street) are two good private school options for K-8.

also consider the 07307 area code. it's literally across the street from 07306 in the heights. there are a lot of two family houses in that price range, and you can rent out one of the floors for extra income. if you prefer a 1 family, you could probably find something similar and a bit cheaper as well.

agreed, protection would not have done much in this case. they snuck up behind him and he was on the floor before he knew what hit him. trying to pull out a gun in that instance would more likely have resulted in them stealing his gun and shooting him than anything else.

having a gun != invincibility. however, the false sense of security that it could give someone might result in more harm than good.

a relative of mine ordered a new blackberry to my house in the heights. i wasnt home at the time so they left it in the mailbox. since the box was too big to fit, it was just chilling out there in plain view. luckily i got home a little while later and it wasnt stolen. however, for future packages we opted to just pick them up from the UPS office in secaucus.

there's a small grocery store near the intersection of bay street and newark ave. they sell fresh fruits and veggies, as well as basic stuff like milk, etc.

I understand if you don't want to make your kid walk in the slush, but what makes you think she won't get sent headfirst into the cement if you slip?

Say it to my face next time you floppy haired fop and we'll see who gets sent headfirst into the cement.

my money's on the toddler. kids are pretty clumsy, especially on the ice.

Re: 201 St Pauls Avenue (St Johns Condos) - Financial Information
Home away from home

when i was in the market for a house/condo, i strongly considered st johns condos. most of the units are in decent condition, and at worst you would have to redo the floors (many of them have older parquet floors).

the location is really ideal for someone who doesn't need to be bar hopping every night. even if you do like to go out in nyc, the walk to jsq is not that much farther than your average hoboken condo. the downside is at nights you have to go through hoboken to get to nyc (unless you take the WTC, but who goes out in the financial district?)

in nativity scenes, the baby jesus is usually not placed out until after christmas. im not sure if city hall follows this tradition, or if it the statue was in fact stolen.

$25 for a one time shot doesn't sound too bad. it's not like you're going to be out there every week (and if so, you would get the membership).

Re: Local HS Honor Student Seeks Guidance for College - Help Smart JCListers!
Home away from home

my advice is similar to what someone else has already posted in the thread. it seems like everyone and their mom goes into pre-med or wants to be a doctor when they're in high school. the amount who actually make it (either because they don't make the cut, or they realize it's a profession they really never liked in the first place) is astounding.

aside from doing the bare minimum (like actually applying to college this year and not missing out on a year), i would recommend he attend any and all events hosted by local colleges that might shed information on the field. i dont know specifically when/where they are, but i know that stevens institute of technology, st peters college, and even probably njcu host events like these from time to time. you should call up these colleges (or go on their website, and then go to their science dept) and see if they offer any similar events / seminars.

being a doctor isnt everything it's cracked out to be - just make sure they're going into it for the right reasons (genuine love of the field) and not the wrong ones (pressure from environment to be one)
