Re: Jersey City Parking Authority now only takes cash & money orders for guest parking permits

Who bounces a $3 check for a parking permit?

If they're afraid of fraud, why accept money orders? Someone who would forge a $3 check for a parking permit would forge a money order if necessary. Making three fake $1 bills would be harder, but maybe they will stop accepting cash next.

Who is to say that the JCPA won't start requiring you to pay in 3 lbs of copper scrap for a 1 day parking permit? Who makes these rules?

Something just seems wrong here. Since it involves the JCPA I'm not exactly surprised. I just can't figure out what their angle is this time around.

Is Jersey City really so far gone that people REALLY are bouncing $3 checks for parking permits?

I agree. It is a classic example of corruption at every level. When the corruption at the top is so extreme, at each level people naturally become more corrupt. Both due to individuals choosing a path of greater corruption, and more corruptible individuals being chosen.

It's similar to some of the worst companies I have worked for. When you see the CEO steal a million dollars in cash at a time, and the head of IT steal pallets full of laptops, of course you're going to steal office supplies by the carload.

Of course Jersey City brings it to a new extreme. I have been amazed at how no government service operates properly in Jersey City. I have further been amazed at the extreme level of impropriety involved.

I feel like we are worse off than in third world countries I have visited, where every individual has an ability to benefit from the corruption. Here if you do not have the right connections, you are a permanent victim.

Also, I worked with an Indian immigrant who didn't wear deodorant and honestly had no idea that it was a problem. She was really embarrassed when her boss finally had to have a talk with her about it. So if the stink is really bugging you, say something -- the offender probably has no clue.

I work with a lot of Indians, and when one of them smells really bad repeatedly, I speak to one who I am friends with. He speaks to the manager of the smelly person, who explains the difference in culture here to his employee.

This has worked quite well, and has avoided seriously offending anyone. Obviously since I am making sure I am two levels removed from the actual discussion, I can't be sure. But I only do this when the smell is extremely bad.

Looks to me that we need to:

1) Verify that the city sent the request as they claim. Nothing can be trusted in Jersey City.

2) Get a copy of said request, to verify that it accurately describes the problem.

3) Insist upon the state that lives hang in the balance and the current design is an unreasonable hazard.

I believe that Councilman Fulop has the power to do all of this with ease. Therefore, since he has already been notified of the existence of this discussion, I will put my trust in him to assure us he is doing his part. If a week passes with no comment, I will pursue other avenues, suggestions of which are welcome. But I really believe that Fulop will be responsive here. I guarantee lives will be saved by improving this intersection, and anyone who disputes that could only argue that the intersection causes maimings and not deaths. (statistics of which I do not have available).

gueren, do you have any more information about the traffic survey / response? Reference numbers, names, paper documents for example, anything that a government official might need to understand the status and assist in pursuing it.

My understanding is that the DOT has not yet responded. Do we know if their response is necessary (or guaranteed), and if their approval is mandatory? Is my assumption correct that this is the NJ state DOT and not a DOT at some other government level?

Is there any more information with respect to the DOT request - for example names of people accountable for the request, reference numbers, and so on?

Do we know if DOT approval means a light will definitely be constructed? Do we know if the city council must vote on it?

Exactly what city agency has done the traffic survey and sent the DOT the data? Or is this going to be obvious to any city or state (assuming it is the state DOT) official?

I really appreciate what you've done so far and I am not asking these difficult questions out of idle curiosity.

About 7:30-8:00pm. Unfortunately my phone does not record the time of 911 calls (!) so I can't say for sure.

I only stayed until I felt that my assailant was going for a weapon after determining that I was off the phone with the police.

I was wondering the same thing. I think we need more details from the OP. Someone got out of their car and attacked a pedestrian?

Fine, I'll tell the rest. I was crossing at this intersection (the crosswalk closer to 9th), and a car refused to stop and the driver yelled at me. I yelled back, "it's a #OOPS#ing crosswalk". A DIFFERENT car stopped (as he was lawfully required to do, at least), the driver started yelling at me. I didn't even respond, I actually felt that his stopping at the crosswalk was more respectful even if he yelled a great deal. The driver (a very large Hispanic man) got out, grabbed me by the throat, threw me down the hill towards the parking garage. I got up, he struck me again in the throat/upper chest and I flew down the hill. He easily outweighed me by two or three times. I called 911 on my cellphone. I received NY 911, who transferred me to the correct 911. I gave them the description of the car and perpetrator repeatedly. He was about to leave but upon realizing that I had given his license plate, he stayed. The instant that 911 hung up with me, which I made a serious error in making clear to him, he made further threats ("you'll get it now" or "you'll learn your lesson now", "ill get you now", I forget the exact words, but it was basically an indication that the violence was to escalate) and reached in his glovebox. I worried that he was reaching for a weapon when I saw him open his glovebox, and went quickly to to find police at the tunnel (I ran down Marin). Upon finding no police, I called 911 again 3 times, and was disconnected immediately each time (before reaching a human or even hearing a ring). I gave up, went home to tend to my wounds, and here I am.

It is perhaps an exaggeration to refer to myself as beaten, I admit. I have bruises and scrapes, but I am not permanently injured. I was thrown to the ground only twice, once with a hand around my throat, and once with more of a push/shove in the throat/upper-chest area.

I'm talking about an intersection with thousands of people crossing daily, and tens of thousands of cars breaking traffic laws daily. If Jersey City is really that bad, I think I'd rather move elsewhere. I'm asking for 10 minutes per day of police presence.

How many grievous injuries per month should an intersection receive before it requires an hour per week of police presence, whether those injuries are the result of cars colliding with pedestrians or angry drivers assaulting pedestrians?

That seems a little drastic. Especially while people are being beat to near death and gaggles of unruly teens rule the streets of our fair city.

Time for a priority check.

I don't mean a constant presence. I mean an hour or two a week, so that people who drive by regularly remember that there is a high chance of there being police in the vicinity.

And people are not only regularly hit at this intersection, but also beaten by drivers who do not appreciate them using the crosswalk.

9th & Marin crosswalk
Home away from home
Home away from home

The crosswalk at 9th and Marin has now gotten completely out of control. Besides people disregarding traffic laws, we have people passing through our community who feel the need to assault citizens lawfully crossing at a crosswalk.

What should our course of action be? I think we should videotape the situation at the intersection, and present it at an appropriate venue. Would this be one of the police community meetings or a city council meeting? Would bringing video be allowed? Would we have to carry in a flat-screen TV? Obviously we would need a large group of people to video the intersection to ensure our safety.

I am willing to speak to the situation at the intersection at any city meeting, but I only believe it would have power if others came to say the same thing. I'm sure everyone who crosses there on a regular basis feels the same way.

I simply want enough of a police presence at that intersection to make people aware that Jersey City will not allow people to violate traffic laws when it seriously endangers pedestrians, and also to make them aware that assaulting pedestrians who attempt to cross at the crosswalk will result in legal consequences.

By the way - who do you call if you actually want the Jersey City police, for a real emergency? 911 will get you 911 in the city, who are extremely rude, who then eventually transfer you to 911 in Jersey City (or Hudson County?), who are even more rude. Is it true that calling the radio room directly will get the police to arrive more quickly? (or even at all)

Is it allowed for a 911 operator to hang up on a caller when they say they have just been assaulted and the perpetrator is still at the scene? My understanding is that 911 is always required to stay on the line with you until emergency services arrive. Note that I'm not talking about a bystander reporting an incident they observed while driving by, but a victim reporting that they were violently attacked and that they still are in imminent fear for their life.

It is extremely minor corruption for Jersey City.

In a thoroughly corrupt town such as this, the voters should get to decide whether someone's offense was great enough to kick them out of office.

If we kicked out everyone who abused their powers, why would people run for office in Jersey City?

The completely incompetent security guards at 525 Washington Blvd will not allow you to take pictures in the vicinity of their building. They don't know where the property line is (I'm personally curious, but am not going through the effort to research it). They threaten to assault people who are taking pictures with cheap digital cameras of their family on benches.

They also don't allow (under the threat of violence) pictures in their lobby, but since that is clearly private property it doesn't bother me as much.

Alarms are a scam too. Someone stealing the whole car knows how to turn it off. Someone stealing stuff out of it will be in and out too quickly for some extra noise to matter.

I'm a little disgusted with the fact that he was not immediately identified, since they had the DNA and it was on file. But at least the police investigated one crime here.

How many other people did he rape between Dec 17 2005 and Apr 7 2006? Was he let out in May 2007 to rape even more until this trial?

Realistically, he's going to have a jolly time raping people in prison for 15 years, get out, and rape and kill someone else.

Perhaps it was a previous prison stay that gave him his taste for rape. In typical JJ fashion, they didn't bother to do any research and give minimal background on the guy.

Re: Where are all the BJ shopping carts coming from?

You yuppie scumbags.

Don't you think if someone is pushing a shopping cart full of stuff down these messed up sidewalks, that they don't really have much of a choice?

Just the trouble of pushing a cart down down sidewalks this bad is punishment enough for borrowing a cart without written permission. Pushing a stroller or granny cart is hard enough, maybe some of you can relate to that.

I've bought a shopping cart full of food at A&P (right across from the Travel Car Service office), and waited 45 minutes for a cab. (3 calls to Travel 10 minutes apart, they said they'd be there in 5 each time, and then 15 minutes more calling other cab services, and the wait when I found one that was willing to go there).

Not everyone has a car or even the extra money for a cab. And cabs are so unreliable that you can't count on them (except the gypsy cabs at Pathmark, they are more polite, have cleaner cars, and they're right there. You can also get kids to help load the car for a couple dollars).

If you want to fix the "problem", encourage BJ's to encourage customers to report where they left the cart, so that their collection truck can recover them more easily.

Honestly I'm disgusted by anyone who sees this as a problem and not just part of the bizarre charm of Jersey City.

So far as them being used as trash receptacles, I have seen at least 10 garbage cans disappear (hit by cars and never fixed) in the 8 years I've lived in JC. I can name the former location of 5 off the top of my head. Why not put your energy into making sure the city has adequate garbage cans, and replaces them when they are destroyed?

How to see a doctor today?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Where does one go if they want to see a doctor today, or even within 36 hours? For a non-emergency, but something that can't wait.

My primary care doctor will set appointments two-three weeks in advance. The receptionist will fight about seeing me today, saying go to the ER instead even for non-emergencies. If I walk in to his office, they'll give in (perhaps medical ethics rules require it, or they just don't want the confrontation in the office), but I don't like starting a visit on an adversarial relationship.

This is both a question for now - e.g. I heard St Mary's in Hoboken (which was AWFUL) was closed down and turned into a place where you can walk in and be seen reasonably quickly, and I'm wondering if this is true. And a question in general - I'd like to switch my primary care doctor to one who works in a group where I can be seen on short notice if I need to, even if he is out golfing.

My insurance doesn't have any primary care physician nonsense anymore, but it used to and I picked my doctor at random (one in JC) because of it (I can see most any doctor and have it covered now). I prefer doctors in NYC in general since there's something sketchy about every profession in Jersey City... But I will happily accept good advice for JC...

Are the carts really more offensive to see than the ugly construction all over?

Aren't you happy that at least one store "allows" people to take the carts?

Yes it's called using common sense. Pay for a parking lot, dont get an expensive car, or roll the dice and take a small risk.

Although i heard stories about a magic parking spot between coles and pavionia where an angry genie will protect your car from any theft attempts.

Get the club, they may get into your car but at least you can make it more time consuming. Perhaps you can get an anti theft insurance policy where if you car is stolen and not recovered then you recoup every dime you paid for the vehicle. I think the vehicle has to be new to take out this policy.

Time consuming to do what? They don't steal the car, they break in and steal what they can.

And if they are stealing the whole car, they're probably professionals, and are aware how easy the club is to defeat. Even kids and crackheads know that a steering wheel can be cut through.

I agree. In fact, I change my own behavior between the PATH and Subway.

I have missed PATH trains (or more likely had to barge my way on after hearing the bing-bong), or not been able to get off PATH trains at my stop, because the conductor was not giving everyone time to get off the train. PATH conductors are the worst.

It is such a shocking difference in behavior between PATH and subway conductors. I don't know if there is a difference in design in the doors as well. I have noticed that subway doors often open immediately if someone holds them or something gets stuck in them, but I don't know if this is due to alert conductors or automation.

A couple egregious incidents in particular I remember on the PATH - a woman in a wheelchair asked me to help her get on the train. As I was pushing her on, the conductor closes the door on her wheelchair. Either it was gross negligence or it was deliberate. What job does the conductor have if not closing the doors on women in wheelchairs is not in the job description. I was very close to him, I think it was the doors closest, or at least in his car. But even if I was at the very end, I think his job is to look first.

Another time, I was traveling with a group including a child in a stroller. They were slow to get up when we arrived at 33rd st. When I heard the bing-bong, I ran up to the doors and held them (well, got myself stuck in them). Now all the doors on the train are closed, the conductor is GONE (I was able to stick my arm all the way out and yell, I was about in the middle o f the train). I can't force the door open. Another passenger went and found a PATH person to open the door. Remember, when the conductor closed the doors, he could have looked and seen that a door did not close, and he also could have looked down the train and seen me waving. Also, before disappearing, he could have walked down the end of the train.

A further problem with the PATH is the violent and dangerous bouncing. To me this indicates that the track is not maintained well and one day there will be a serious accident. It is so violent that it is not safe at all to move around on a moving PATH train unless you hold on to something the whole time (and even then you're taking some risk). As bad as the subway is, it isn't as bad as the PATH. So you are taking a real risk of injury if you move towards the door before the train has come to a complete stop. This means that people are slow to get off the train. Obviously this interacts with the problem of obnoxious conductors with no concern for their passengers.

I have always been surprised how little respect the Port Authority has for their riders.

A blinking red light by itself is the worst, people think it means you can just go right through it. I don't understand why people think this, but 8th & Marin late at night proves it is common. No one will stop at the flashing red light, and only a few cars will slow down.
