Re: Signs / Billboards in Downtown
Home away from home
Home away from home

I've been told that the difference between the signs on the embankment and your windows and the billboard that started this whole thread is:

Things that existed before the law went into place (and I'm assuming before the neighborhood was officially historic) are allowed to remain. So you are allowed to have inappropraite windows if they've been there for a long time. Once you go to replace them, you have to put the right things in. Same with the signs on the embankment. THey were put up when they were allowed. Now that they aren't allowed, they are allowed to stay. But nobody is allowed to replace the structure/frame. Once they do that it's gone for good.

The difference between that and the cunningham billboard is that the cunningham billboard isn't "grandfathered" to exist like the embankment signs. Also the cunningham sign is not in a historic area so it is not allowed on the grounds that billboards are prohibited, not on historic issues.

Old nasty stuff can remain until it is replaced/removed. New stuff has to be legal and appropriate.

So you can't do much about the embankment signs unless you see them being taken down and put back up (this doesn't include the ad in the frame, just the frame).

Found this from April 7, 2011 , so if this signage is still up I guess it comes down on Saturday.

Case: P 06-018 475 Washington Blvd ? Monaco Approval for one (1) year interim use signage for banners and adjusted signage.

If these signs are up longer than they are allowed, the zoning office needs to write a violation and fine. I think the online complaint section of the city website has a place to report this.... I'll look into it. These signs are hideous.

Re: Key Foods - Jersey & 3rd
Home away from home
Home away from home

I live very near here and in the past would only go when absolutely necessary and for shelf stable items. I had to pick up a few items today, primarily produce, and decided to check it out on my way to the produce market on Newark Ave. Well, I didn't need to go to Newark Ave because no longer was the produce scary at C-Town/Key Foods. I think these changes are great. My one and only concern is what if they "upgrade" and in so doing get rid of some of the ethnic variety? I hope that doesn't happen. A few weeks ago I was in there and they didn't have one of the latin american sodas that I like, and the guy working the floor assured me that they were just out and would order more. I hope this is accurate and they won't won't stop carrying these sometimes otherwise hard-to-find items.

I also noticed what an above poster said- hope they get new shopping baskets! Well keep hope alive because I think a new half-wall they installed is to corral shopping carts and I would think that new shopping carts and baskets might be part of the same upgrade and perhaps that is coming soon!!!!!

I hope they also discontinue they *ahem ILLEGAL* refusal to not accept credit/debit under $10. Yes, this is a violation of the agreement that stores make with Visa/MC/AmEx and if they are caught doing it are in trouble. I just hope they stop that nonsense because most people nowadays don't have so much cash on them!

Good luck to the new Key Foods.

Approved with conditions to a second review - there are conditions to make it more historical to the legacy of Mayor Cunningham and 10-Year-Anniversary (May 2012) of Foundation for kids. The design of the synthetic-cloth-like billboard (will be draped over sides of warehouse) was horrible according planning board member Leon Yost. A subcommittee will meet next week to review new design, color scheme and new body copy that was recommended by the board. The size will be reduced to 20x30, and the amount of time it will be up could be as little as three months to a year (no one stated time frame by the end of the discussion). Two people abstained from vote. The less time the better (imho) - the person submitting request was willing to have it up for only three months. Leon Yost said it wouldn't be up one day if the design wasn't improved.

Thanks for the thorough report, JLKM.
The problem is that if the Board didn't put an expiration date on it, they can say "3 months" or "1 year" until they're blue in the face but there is no legal means to make them take it down. The Board should have put that on the record and made it a requirement. Otherwise, let's see if a year (or two) from now it's still up. I sure hope not but I'm not holding my breath.

Have you checked with the building department to see of permits or COs were issued? Your post suggests not, but for all you know they did get them. If they did, your complaint is merely about aesthetics. Not that I disagree with that assessment but it's entirely different than unsubstantiated accusations of working without permits.

as an update, I never got an official follow up from Councilman Fulop. I never heard a peep from Councilwoman Richardson (how do you get elected if you ignore your constituents?), and I only got an acknowledgement email from Councilman Lavarro.

Nevertheless, I did glean the info that was mentioned in an earlier post from a chain of emails I was privy to.

I hope to attend the meeting on Tuesday but the 5:30 start time is difficult.

Will anyone else be present?

Looks like they're offering another 50% off deal at pole position. I did this last fall with a group of friends and we had a blast!

The deal says $30 for 2 laps + a drink.

Enjoy!

Re: Signs / Billboards in Downtown

I've gotten a chain of discussion emails between city officials and Councilman Fulop. None were addressed directly to me but I have been included in the conversation. From what I can tell, Fulop opposes it but the Planning Board or Planning Officer supports it for a year or so. I also read that billboards nearby were opposed in the past but this time it is "different". Perhaps because the Cunningham foundation is a non-profit (but, Ms. Cunningham is a politician and I've heard she might run for mayor!). Even if it is the best most beautiful and generous and well-regarded non-profit on the entire planet, why would we want a billboard? Aren't there more tactful and attractive ways to advertise yourself? And if you were really that great why would you want to do something that is not allowed?

I wonder if it would be useful to contact the cunningham people and tell them they suck? (nicely, of course)

The question mark should be inside the quotation marks.

only if the title itself is a question, ie: "Are You Smarter than a Fifth-Grader?"

the answer to which, in this thread's case, would be No.

In Great Britain, your correction would be accurate. In America, it is not. I happen to agree with the British rule of grammar on this, but in the good old US of A punctuation is always inside quotes.

Commas and periods go inside the quotes in the US, outside in Great Britain. Question marks and Exclamation points go outside on both sides of the Atlantic (unless, as Biscuit states, the punctuation is actually part of the title).

Thanks!

I was told by the planning officer that the ONLY place in town that billboards are allowed is Journal Square. So this nonsense in historic districts is crazy. Why aren't the neighborhood groups causing a fuss?

Heights, you're right I shouldn't have said the planning board WILL approve it. They vote. I expect they'd approve it since it opens the doors for other politicans to do the same, which would suit city hall and I think city hall at a minimum influences the planning board.

The advertisement is for Sandra Cunningham. Exactly what the words are I have no idea. It was the size as much as the content that offended me. And the fact that private stores can't do this but a politician is given a pass.

Signs / Billboards in Downtown
Home away from home
Home away from home

Tell me if I'm overreacting....

Some time ago, I was told that billboards in downtown are prohibited. I was helping a friend open a store, and this information didn't really bother me, in fact I thought it was a great law to keep the area looking nice.

Yesterday it was brought to my attention that downtown is now getting TWO 40x40 billboards on one of the old warehouse buildings along Marin Blvd.

How convenient, these billboards will be advertising Sandra Cunningham. The planning board will be approving this on April 3.

My question is as follows:
- Am I overreacting in my reaction?
- Doesn't this imply that Cunningham might be running for mayor?
- If cunningham does this what is to stop others (other politicians) from doing the same and covering our entire neighborhood in billboards that are bigger than some apartments??????

If I'm overreacting I'll bite my tongue. On the other hand, if this is something that the neighborhood agrees is a problem I think we need to speak out.

Your opinion will guide me.

How is this because of Gentrification? As someone who you would probably call a gentrifier (simply because I am in my 30s and white....but that's a whole different thread) this is one of the few stores that I actually DID go to. I venture to say that "yuppies" and artists (because they occasionally still use 35mm) were ones keeping this store alive for as long as it lasted.

The store was great, but didn't keep up with technology or, as a previous poster mentioned, sometimes prices just weren't competitive. But to blame this on gentrification is backwards. Higher-end stores like this (and I use higher-end here to mean niche markets and expensive equipment) would be the RESULT of gentrification, not killed by it.

What do chain restaurants have to do with anything? Downtown doesn't exactly attract the kind of resident or diner who frequents chains. The problem is making neighborhood families feel unwelcome. It has nothing to do with comparing our options to chains (not a good thing) or encouraging families to let their kids run wild. Your idea that children don't belong in restaurants is bizarre unless you're talking about a high-end white linen establishment.

I'll preface this by saying that Saigon Cafe is, IMO, the best restaurant along the downtown stretch of Newark Ave. Really underrated and significantly better than Nha Trang.

I'll also say that parents who allow their children to be unruly in restaurants drives me crazy.

That being said, I think the new "rule" at Saigon cafe is inappropriate - both in time (come on, 7pm is early) and in intent. Deal with a family individually if their child is causing a ruckus. And for the record I've seen 8, 9, and 10 year olds FAR more disruptive than "infants and toddlers". I'm disappointed. I don't think I'll boycott the place or anything, but I think it's using the wrong means to get to a perfectly valid "end".
