Re: Okay, so who here thinks the Katyn monument needs to go?

the over-the-top gruesomeness of this statue is sort of why I like it. say what you will, it definitely gets your attention.

but that's why I think it defeats the purpose of honoring the Katyn dead. it's almost too macabre to inspire thoughtful discussion.

as a landmark, you could do worse than "meet me at the statue of the guy with the bayonet sticking out of his back. no, seriously. it's a huge bayonet, sticking right through him. you'll know it when you see it."

this larger fix apparently involves breaking off the top half of the clock at Erie Street. last week I walked past half a dozen workmen standing around the sheared-off carcass, scratching their heads. now there's a plastic garbage bag over the still-standing remains. any bets on how long it'll stay that way, before the entire clock comes down?

real top-notch job on the Newark Avenue streetscape. yup.

The music sounded fine, as it did when we saw Shameka Copeland last week, but the dialog portions were very distorted by it.

I think we're just spoiled by the dolby-surround we're used to hearing in modern movie theatres.

dodgy acoustics aside, what a fun night saturday! the place was more packed than I've ever seen it, and the cheering of our crowd nearly put those 60s screaming teenagers to shame. nearly, but not quite.

can't wait til next month's 70s-fest. have never seen Taxi Driver on the big screen, and Saturday Night Fever's gonna be a hoot.

stopped by last week and really liked it. I had eggplant parm, date had shishkebob (sp?) both were quite tasty. neither of us was thrilled about the french onion soup, which was rather bland. carrot cake was a great capper to a lovely meal. we'll be back.

Coachella is in a temporary venue with no camping, and they do just fine. Plus, Indio California is hours away from anywhere. We're just a ferry ride from NYC. I blame bad marketing, period.

it seems like every LSP event is like that. anybody remember, back about 4-5 years ago, a festival with Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Los Lobos, Parliament...? no? well, neither does anybody else. my friends and I were among a crowd of maybe a hundred people at this event, thanks to a last-minute ticket giveaway on some radio station. before show day, we hadn't heard anything about it.

Because the majority of people see the act of paying taxes as a personal affront. Stop complaining about taxes and maybe our governments can afford to make the investments in the services that are so desperately needed.

Like schools everyone contributes but not all have a vested interest. Meaning not everyone has children, and not everyone takes the train or at least not as frequent as others. Majority wins.

I disagree. Good schools benefit the entire community, both in property values and quality-of-life issues (like not having dropouts mug you on your way home from the overcrowded PATH train).

ditto decent infrastructure. I don't have a car, but the fact that my neighborhood is now a congested shortcut to the tunnel definitely affects my quality of life.

if the PATH gets worse, people will take to their cars or move away, taking their tax dollars with them. this will affect you whether you ride the train or not.

what would they do with the local trains that are in the way?

think about it. with only 1 track in each direction, express trains are impossible, unless they come 15+ minutes after the previous train. and where's the time savings in that?

Agreed. At first it was nice to hear a voice advocating for the dogs, but now you are starting to sound a bit off-kilter. What gives?

The safest place for a dog to be is leashed by its owner's side. If Vigilante insists on letting his pet roam free, he is no advocate for dogs.

this has been mentioned before, but does anyone know why exactly the JJ is so loathe to mention a suspect's race? what journalism handbook is keeping them from writing "late 20s, hispanic..." or "late 20s, caucasian..."? I mean, seriously. If they're not going to give a complete description, why give any description at all?

it's the elephant in the room of every one of their crime stories, and it needs to be addressed.

in the meantime, I'll keep an eye out for any young adults wearing baggy clothing.

wouldn't be surprised if they targeted rental cars, especially out-of-towners, knowing you won't be around to fight it.

I've had a zipcar unfairly ticketed. zipcar just pays the ticket and bills the customer, no questions asked. easy money for JCPA.

And what about the people who can't afford to pay higher rents? It would be safe to say that I am middle class. I am single, work two jobs and go to school full-time. If they raised rents then where would I go? Just because I pay a lower rent doesn't mean i'm a bad person. I dont live downtown cause simply put, I cannot afford it. Should Jersey City be only for people who can afford 1200 a month for a studio? I am just curious as to your thought process.

Then that's just too bad. I feel your plight- I am in the same boat but its true that a few bad apples do spoil the bunch. And if that it what it takes to make a community safe for the majority of the population then so be it.

wow. talk about dumping the baby out with the bathwater. how about this: if you commit a crime, you are no longer eligible for section 8 housing. if you harbor somebody who commits a crime, you are no longer eligible. keep the hard-working folks who are just trying to live their lives, no matter what their income, and throw out the trash.

by not helping to bring the guilty party to justice, your friend is guilty-by-association. maybe 8 months in jail will drive that point home.

Montclair Book Center is a great example of a well-run, successful indie book store. (and the only one I can think of, outside of The Strand.) Their used/rare books are the draw, plus an extensive comic book section. New hardcovers are always as cheap as (or cheaper than) Amazon. Browsing for hours is encouraged. They've been in that location for decades, so probably aren't getting gouged by high rent. Plus - this is probably the kicker - they're also online. Evolve or perish, small businesses.

I work near Columbus Circle, so I end up taking the NYC subway after I take the Path in anyway.

this is not a tough equation to solve on your own. try the WTC line (to the 1, I guess?) and see if it's quicker and/or more pleasant.
