Is Jack Shaw related to Lois Shaw?

One person? One? Isn't that like knowing one minority, or one homosexual and pontificating?

The exchange about "icechute"---now THAT'S funny. Insults get hurled around here with such, I hate to say it, trigger-quick sensitivity, that I can see how MaryB would think "icechute" was something like "douchebag," a perennial favorite. No insult to Icechute intended.

The PATH and Light Rail schedules provide times for each station for each trip, except during rush hour.

Who invested in the new oven? The owner of the property, or the renters? It is a little unclear from the posts, and will influence whether I decide to try this pizza.

Totally agree with the points about the ancillary benefits of no music. I have never understood how music, particularly when played at increasing decibels to compete with crowd noise, enhances conversation, and I totally avoid places where you can only talk by speaking directly into someone's ear. I know that's an extreme, but I still like the idea of no or very low generic-type music.

Can't wait to try this place out.

Re: The Beacon

That is precisely why I asked what I asked about a nice neighborhood, CChester. I moved to JC from Brooklyn, and the first time I drove around the Grove Path area, I thought it looked rough, with a lot of the same "types" of people strolling around that others have noted near the Beacon, classifying it as "not nice." Plus, I did not think the streets and businesses looked very appealing as I drove around downtown. Kind of like people who drive past the Beacon twice a day, I would have continued thinking that, had I not listened to people on this list, and ventured into the area establishments myself.

JC, overall, is generally a gritty looking place, and a place I like. Only the very sterile, waterfront properties would not evoke possible mixed reactions from people who are used to really nice neighborhoods. I frankly don't see a HUGE difference driving from some of these classified "war zones" (such an exaggeration, btw) and the ordained better sections. I am not talking about the gutted out, condemned areas with hordes milling about and obvious drug deals, which DO exist---just the more neutral, representative streets in these areas.

So if you are judging neighborhoods on how things look when you drive by, just remember to keep the true sensory perception and sensibilities straight.

I am very surprised as well. Had the same positive experience with the service and delicious food as others have posted. Was at the cart for quite a while talking to the owner, and they were extremely attentive to the food and service.

Has anyone ever fought a railroad crossing violation? It seems like there is a little more wiggle room, as one could be near/under the light when it goes red.

Please read through my posts to see if I said anyone was lying. I merely stated my own opinion and observations and gave some detail about the number of times I go in there so that the reader might decide what weight to give my comments. Same as you giving your opinion and observations.

+1 Hudson Hawk

I have bought so many sandwiches from A-1 on so many different occasions, I really can't count them. I have never observed signs of smoking behind the counter, and the guys have always been very polite and quick. I happen to like the egg salad---in fact, last week I had at least 3 egg salad sandwiches, and they were consistently delicious.

Chester, are you basing your botulism comment on anything you personally observed/experienced, or just getting in on the action? When people levy food poisoning allegations against businesses, usually it is done with more detail, including regaling the listers with information about visits to the bathroom or ER, as it were. I'd like to know if there is anything to your comment, as I am a frequent A-1 customer.

Tremors or ground shaking

Did anyone else feel tremors early Saturday morning---at about 5am? I don't think I live close enough to the trains or turnpike to explain the sensation that my house was swaying a bit, with stuff on the bookcase rattling. But maybe I do. It is the second time I have noticed this in about a 4-month period.

I, for one, am NOT going to boycott A-1 Deli. I go there all the time, purchase and enjoy excellent sandwiches made with reliably fresh ingredients. However, I have purchased fruits from Lee's that were sub-par, and I do not go there very often as a result. But that is not really the point of this thread, I guess. I don't know who any of you are, but I have relied on this site for recommendations and advice. Not here. This story relies too much on speculation, hearsay and hyperbole, and, therefore, I am sticking with my own experience until I see something that tells me otherwise.
In fact, I think we will have A-1 pepper turkey heros for supper tonight.

Does anyone know of a place in the area--NYC included---that serves Cambodian food? There used to be a great little restaurant in Brooklyn, Cambodian Cuisine, which closed some time ago. Have not found any since then. Thanks.

This guy's not the sharpest perp in the pokey. Wouldn't it be better to break up the felonies, that is, deal the heroin first, THEN break and enter. Multi-tasking just doesn't pay off in the criminal world.

It's not just the shopping carts. Pathmark was ranked nationwide as one of the best grocery stores. You would NEVER know it from a visit to the Old Colony. I can't even stomach shopping in that store. The smell of the food makes me nauseated---many items, particularly in produce and meats, are one step removed from rotten. It is a gross, horrible place. I picked up a bag of grapefruit a couple years back, before I banned myself from that place, and I saw a couple cucarachas scamper away. The shopping carts are the final salt rubbed into the wound of your Pathmark experience as you exit and try to make it to your car without vomiting or getting mugged, balancing 120 pounds and 15 bags.

Re: Commuting to lower Manhattan by bike

I'd compare the Brompton more to an Audi or a Volvo, with unmatched folding engineering. It's not as comfortable a ride, for sure, as some other brands, but I doubt there is another bike that gets as compact as quickly and is made as well. For example, the bike folds in a manner that the chain is completely tucked inside, and, therefore, does not rub against your clothing or other people's clothing. I shamelessly admit to being a Brompton schill.

+1 Greested.

Biking to the ferry, staying above ground in the light and air, not pressing against strangers is the BEST commute. And I agree with the warning not to scrimp on the bike. I started with a lower-priced, but decent, fold-up, and ended up buying a Brompton, which is perfect for my needs. It folds quickly--perfect and small--and is a high quality machine.

I have also never paid a bike fee for a fold-up on the ferry.

Re: Who here really, really hates Comcast?

We recently decided to get rid of Verizon DSL when our contract was up. I called Comcast Friday night to inquiry about package specials---we don't have cable, don't watch much TV except Netflix or via download. I got the information, discussed it with my family and called back to order internet alone, since they are running a very good deal on that. Well, the second person I talked to quoted a price $40/month higher, and said she had never heard of such a special. We both got a little heated, and I said I was hanging up and calling back later to get the real deal from one of her colleagues. And I did exactly that. I am not sure exactly what the lesson here is, but I do know we are at the mercy of many incompetents.

I know this is petty, and I surely have no right to complain...but...I find it very annoying when I am on an early morning train and there's a group of adults in the car chattering loudly, using their "outdoor" voices. I know the train is not a library or chapel, and people are free to talk and laugh as they please, but I just wish it didn't interfere with my quiet headspace on the journey through the tunnel to the beehive. Yes, we live in an urban area, crammed in against each other, but this loud chatter is infrequent enough that I think most people feel the same way I do and either talk relatively quietly or read, sleep, listen to music. Whatever.
