Re: Whole Foods in JC?

I don't think this is a scenario of "deserve" versus not. It is plain and simple economics; there is a demand for a grocer like this in Jersey City and Hoboken. I am not sure Newark has the same kind of demand.

The petition that someone started on change.org is still short of 700 signatures; maybe we could continue with that route and hope that once we reach the total number of required signatures, we can convince a WF or TJs to come in. Or Wegmen's. We definitely need better grocers in the area. A&P, Shop Wrong and Pathmark are abysmal. Keyfoods is decent but is far for certain people.

I'm a big fan of public shaming and petitions. Maybe we need to start a petition on change.org to get the PA to increase service.

Hopefully some sort of negative publicity will help nudge them in the right direction?

The pics on the website show the walls stripped to the studs and the floors stripped to the sub floors (diff layouts and floor types for restaurants and gyms) so I think the "fishy" smell or the smell of "BO" should be gone.

Wonder if the fire did them in...

I was told by a real estate agent once that Cruz was doing very well, even in the economic downturn. He owns a lot of real estate downtown that he bought in the 80s or 90s for pennies and is now worth a lot of money. I think he's realized he can make a boat load on rent - location is fantastic, lots of space etc - so that's why it's up for rent.

I would think he would have been ok with the fire scenario, provided he had the right kind of insurance.

Honestly, Uber is very very inexpensive and is a lot less effort than taking multiple trains/buses.

I took an Uber from Grove Street to Newark Airport on Thursday morning and back on Monday night and I paid about $25 each trip. Both trips were within 20-25 mins.

You can preview the fare before you book. Hope this helps.

Vindication15 that's very naive.

For the same reason as it is unfair to sell a Mercedes Benz to someone for the price of a Corolla because they cannot afford it. Life doesn't work on handouts. There is a price set for certain goods/services and if I can afford it, I will. If I cannot, I will buy what I can afford. Luxury goods/services are not a basic necessity.

I am one of the "middle class" people. I have a job and I work very hard. I don't expect someone to give me something because I don't make enough money. I don't make enough money because of the choices I made for my career. If I had chosen to become an investment banker and made $4 million a year I would have the money to rent the Kardashian's private jet. Since I did not make those choices, I will live within my means. And I don't expect anyone to give me any handouts or discounts.

Has there ever been a reported crime of any kind on that bridge? I've never felt unsafe there even pretty late at night -- there's a surprising amount of foot traffic to and from the marina, not to mention park security. Think the worst you might run into is a parked car with people getting busy inside.

I do not know of any reported crimes however, I know of people who's cars have been broken into late at night while they were at the ER at JCMC or parked there for whatever reason.

I do think that area gets a little sketchy at night. Plus I've heard of neighboring well lit streets where people were mugged or attacked (sexual violence? not sure). It just seems too easy to temp malicious activity in that area.

Yes and no. The point is that we shouldn't have to leave our area to go to an area that is parallel to ours. It is a little sketchy sometimes but I don't think anyone is getting shot there anytime soon. It seems futile to go all the way around another part of town to get to something that's so close.

To my point again, maybe if, instead of vehicular access via Jersey Ave, they 1. Clean up that area 2. start a shuttle to the different areas in LSP and 3. increase the foot traffic there late at night by increasing street lights etc, we wouldn't need this new roadway. But either way, we all agree that the area needs some work. Is the $10M too much? Maybe. But, if it boosts economic development in the area, maybe it's worth it?

I don't know much about the casino or the "true" motive behind the proposal of the new bridge but as a resident of the area, I think this may be a good change.

Here's why:

1. The area, although full of wildlife, is gross and nasty and a graveyard for abandoned boats etc. This area is in need of remediation or a major clean up.

2. There are new developments in the area; the remediation will help property values.

3. The rape lane/rape bridge is unsafe (due to lack of foot traffic after sundown). Having a new wider road (hopefully with more street lights), will make it more accessible.

4. It will boost the area as an overall. More development means more businesses will move into the Pathmark plaza. That area is also in need of serious remediation.

5. There will be better access to the restaurants in the park that remain open until 10-11 (i think) when the ferry and other public transportation shuts down.

As for LSP itself, it would be wonderful if they started a shuttle within the park that connects the different picnic areas to the Liberty Science Center and Audrey Zapp Drive for people that use the current bridge.

And to the point someone made here, whatever development they do do, I hope it doesn't harm the wildlife that inhabits the area. We shouldn't completely destroy the area, just enhance whatever is built there and preserve all the natural elements as much as we can.

Have you ever thought about what goes into a construction project?

There is a whole process once a design has been created. There is a bid process for a general contractor and sub contractors. There is a budget set, it is altered depending on the bids/market value, then you go seek funding. Since this is a public project, the funding part should be easier as it is usually predetermined before the project is designed. But public projects bring a slew of other things: bureaucracy and a whole lot of paper work (think DMV).

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as signing a contract.

Oh man! Glad to see there are others that call the pedestrian bridge the "rape bridge". That's what my husband and I call it!

Having said that, I think that area is in serious need of some remediation. The bridge goes through this "swamp" that reminds of something I saw on a Mississippi swamp tour! They need to add - in addition to vehicle/bike/pedestrian access - real street lights that actually illuminate the path rather than the sorry excuses they have there right now. I understand that the park closes at dusk but the restaurants are open until later. It has been a hassle trying to get back to the "mainland" after dark without a car.

Hopefully this new bridge will allow more people to visit. And maybe, if this plan goes thru, they can start a shuttle (another discussion I'm sure) that goes from Audrey Zapp drive up to the waterfront and to Liberty Science Center.

I'm sorry if people think that the residents of JC are being harsh or mean or overly critical regarding

However, within a 2 block radius of the PATH, there are at least (that I have counted) 8 restaurants that serve the EXACT same menu. John's Kitchen Cafe was a welcome change as it serves good hearty food for a decent price and is not a farm to table scenario.

I agree with the argument that we would rather see store fronts occupied rather than vacant but could definitely use some diversity in the food options we get in the DTJC area. And I am happy that none of these places are chain restaurants. I would much rather support a small business than give any business to any big named stores/chains.

Not saying that there isn't a need for parking in certain locations, I'm just pointing out that you may not realize how few people actually have cars in this city. It's all about the percentages. Agree with Tommy C. Every great mid-sized city must have a draw of some kind. Usually that comes in the form of a big-time University (or several), big sports team, major historical landmark or natural beauty (beaches - think San Diego) , or perhaps a major medical facility or employer. Jersey City has none of those things.

What is does have is unbelievable proximity and access to NYC. NYC is our draw. What will then make Jersey City the best mid-sized City is to thereafter be the best place to live and reside OUTSIDE of NYC, while still being able to enjoy the benefits of NYC (work, recreation).

Personally, I would never want to live in NYC or Brooklyn or Queens. I don't like how crowded it is and how much of a hassle it is to get off the darn Island whenever you want to go somewhere. That is why I chose to live in JC and purchase a home in JC. I have a problem with some quality of life issues in JC now that I have a family.

Improve quality of life in JC so that it becomes the most desirable commuter City to NYC. Make it a place where families want to stay (improve schools, parks and rec, cleanliness). Business would do better and social problems would improve with the increased stability. If that happens, property values will go through the roof over time.

I think you hit the nail on the head. If JC could just increase it's quality of life for young families, it would be an ideal location for people to live in. At the moment, other than great restaurants, we lack any kind of recreation for kids and adults. We have Liberty Science Center, which is great, but inaccessible via public transit and we have a mall with a somewhat *acceptable* movie theatre. We could definitely benefit from more things to do. Schooling thing goes without saying.

Keeping JC residents in JC over the weekends is going to help elevate the economic status and increase quality of life in the area.

Lastly, people need to stop being hung up on the "6th Borough" thing. A rose by any other name ...

OOH how could I have forgotten one of the most important things?!?!

We could have a "JC circulator"; a FREE bus service that connected the neighborhoods that are not connected by existing public transportation. I came across the Charm City Circulator in Baltimore when I visited them recently. It's a great idea as Baltimore has abysmal parking AND public transportation.

Here's more info about it.

But the problem is that the rest of this country isn't set up like that. So if JC wants to attract visitors, it either has to have direct NJT access or have parking spaces available for visitors for a reasonable cost.

I kind of agree and disagree. I think we need to be able to attract visitors. Here's how we can do that:

1. Create a haven for restaurants where people from neighboring areas (probably not Manhattan) come and visit. There is a great surge in the restaurants in the area and hopefully this will help.

2. Create nightlife where people from surrounding areas (again, probably not Manhattan) come in for something different. We see this with Hoboken. People from all over go to Hoboken to go bar hopping, to go to the St. Pattys parade etc. This is something we can work on.

3. Create an anchor for culture and art. I think JC is doing a great job with the art culture. We are trying to bring in live music with the Lowes and the White Eagle Hall. It will take a while but it may help with local "tourism".

4. Make LSP a destination. Connect the existing Embankment to LSP or do something with both. LSP has tried to have events such as the Polo match and 4th of July fireworks but we can make it better. Ferris wheel or not. Somehow connect Liberty Science Center with LSP (trolley? the tram idea was shot down).

5. Create recreation for teenagers and kids. People from all over Brooklyn go to the Aviator Sports and Events Center. they have an indoor arcade, rock climbing, bowling (i think) etc. We could use something like this in the area for sure.

I'm sure for a "tourism" perspective, there are many other things we can do. I have merely listed a few things.

As for the parking scenario, I agree we need parking however, since we already have many lots downtown, and that's where most of the action is, at the moment (the waterfront, the bars/restaurants, LSP), there isn't a need for additional parking (and you can take the PATH) ... unless we boost these areas so much that we need the additional parking.

Well obviously these cities (worldwide) have no idea what they are doing. Let's buy a few more cars so we can add more parking, less green space, add more pollution, cause more traffic issues etc

Then there's the infrastructure, including both public transport and roads. Our current situation isn't cutting it and we're just piling in more people. Agree on stores, though really I'd be happy to chop the list down to just Whole Foods.

There are a lot of great parks in JC. Liberty State Park (LSP) is absolutely gorgeous and literally steps away. The only thing I would change about LSP is the GORGEOUS abandoned railway station. They need to revamp that and make it into a restaurant or some sort of venue that can host concerts or something. It may just be a little economic stimulus for the area.

As for dogs, people need to pick up after their pets.

I don't want to totally discount your fear, but I just want to pull you back from the ledge a bit. Your assuming all these people are taking the PATH to work. They're not, and they're not going on at th same time. Personally, half of the new residents I know moved to JC because their jobs moved here. A lot of the new residents will also jobs in the NYC financial district, and the WTC line is not nearly as crowded as the JSQ line.

Agreed that not all are going to take the PATH and agreed that there are a lot of people that don't take one particular line. I did not in particular mention one line or the other. The issue at hand is that we have a limited resource in terms of the current transportation provided whereas there is a potential in the ridership increasing. I have not heard of anyone address this issue other than concerned citizens in forums similar to this.

In any case, the PATH was great until JC "was put on the map". I have lived in JC for over a decade and I've watched the PATH deteriorate in terms of service. And I'm sure people who have lived in JC longer than I have, can say the same for the trains getting more and more crowded.

I just hope this isn't the reason I leave JC. I happen to love it here but if the train scenario doesn't change, I may just reconsider moving.

This is fantastic news! Let's pay more for less!

What are they going to do about the additional residents supposedly moving in within the next 12-15 months? There are at least (that I counted) 6 high rises going up.

If you assume 40 floors on average per building (6 in total that I counted) with at least 10 apartments per floor, and 2 residents at min per apt:

40x10x2x6 = 4,800 new passengers (at least! I'm sure there are more that are not accounted for in here)

We are looking at additionally ridership of at least 4,800 - 5,000 people per day. Are the PA doing anything about the additional ridership? I know the answer to my question but it's worth a shot asking.

Additionally, I could have sworn Fulop had promised to fix this whole Hoboken scenario. I thought during his campaign, he had vowed to alter the whole Hoboken stopover during late nights and weekends. It truly makes no sense given that Jersey City is a significantly larger city with no weekend service to the WTC.
