Re: Lafayette Redevelopment

I'm surprised you say Newport. I got off the Path there once to go to Target (I don't have a car) and was surprised at the development there. it was like the twilight zone. huge towers, hardly any people, and very suburban infrastructure. i couldn't wait to get out of there. definitely not a neighborhood. what's going on with that? didn't seem appealing at all.

However, if you think it's going to be developed within the next 5 years then you're just living in la-la land.

First of all, developers are already taking a risk by developing in Jersey City versus Manhattan or Brooklyn. The appealing places to develop outside of NYC is Hoboken, Newport area, and then the downtown area because of their vicinity to NYC and easy 24/7 access via PATH.

Now ask yourself - are all those places completely developed yet? When will those places get fully developed? In downtown alone, I can mention developments such as Morgan Pointe, Liberty Harbor North, GC 2, the 3rd street ironstate development....which are all in its infant stages of development. No one is flocking to JC in droves.. and if there are developers coming to JC, it sure ain't to Lafayette....let's just take step back here and be real.

I was born and raised in JC and I love it here but I am also honest about why most people relocate to JC - it's close to NYC and it's cheaper than NYC. Developers also know this...

It will be developed once every inch of downtown is fully developed. There is nothing Lafayette offers that downtown does not....and please don't tell me the area has "history"

99.9% of people move into an area because it's safe, easy to get to NYC from, and gentrified. None of which currently apply to Lafayette....

yes, well, those who take the path of least resistance will always just settle in the most convenient place where they don't have to think about it.

but for those who maybe don't have as much money to burn but still want to buy something, lafayette is definitely an option. even in the two months i have lived here (i'm renting) i have noticed changes. MAE opened, the community garden opened, there is new construction going up next door to me that will have a store front on the first floor. 10 years ago there were areas of brooklyn that you wouldn't even consider going to that are now the "it" place to be. so yes, it will be developed soon. this is a metropolitan area. people are pouring into the nyc area, and they need places to live.

It's true. TJ's was way cheaper than my local C-Town in Brooklyn. It was out of the way but sometimes I would go there because I could get much better quality for way less money. Seriously, 2-buck chuck. All I have to say.

come to think of it, we should phase out plastic bags. why do we need a new plastic bag to carry something for 5 minutes that is just getting thrown away when we get home. (i try and reuse them as trash bags, but there are just too many and they pile up). trust me, it won't be an apocalypse when it happens. i highly doubt you are going to be driving out of your way to get groceries. it's ridiculous.

What does saving a few plastic bags at checkout save in the grand scheme of things? The US is probably the most wasteful country on this planet. What does this City statute buy other than a few votes and drive some shoppers to Bayonne and Hoboken? I'll be "bone-headed" on this one along with possibly thousands of people that will shop outside of JC, until it becomes a state mandate.

I doubt people will drive out of their way just to get plastic bags at a different grocery store. true, it may not seem like much, but i guess every little bit helps, environment-wise. you have to start somewhere. i currently don't have re-usable shopping bags but if we switched over i'm sure i would just buy some and adapt. this really wouldn't be more than a minor inconvenience.

I live next to a construction site (yay, right?) and they start at around 7am. I set my alarm for 7 anyway so I am waking up when they start. I don't get home til 7pm and they are always done by then. They don't work weekends either (thankfully) so I can sleep in at least then.

The only thing is they are blocking the entire sidewalk and the whole thing is walled off with a sign that says "use other side" but that makes no sense since my building is on this side. I always have to walk around it hoping I don't get hit by a car. Why bother saying "use other side?"

Where I used to live in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which is a very desirable, safe, and getting-expensive neighborhood, the main drag is Manhattan Avenue and all the Polish places have very generic signage, like plastic, bad typefaces, 99 cent store looking stuff. Still people flock to Greenpoint in droves now. One block over from Manhattan Ave there is Franklin St, which is filled with "hipster-signage," very nice, well-thought out, quaint signs. I like both, but I must say I find the crappiness of Manhattan Ave signs kind of endearing.

The police cruiser was just sitting there and not on any obvious business. Worse, there was plenty of room for the car to be parked closer to the curb and out of the bike lane--but the cop didn't seem to care.

Nor did the two other drivers who had their cars double-parked blocking the bike lane between Columbus and Montgomery, making a total of 3 cars in the bike lane on that short stretch of road. And that was for the north side of the street only!

Every time I ride down Grove I encounter 3 to 5 cars parked in the bike lane for that short stretch. I decided to just take the center of the lane because it's safer than merging in and out of the bike lane constantly to avoid double parked cars. I don't understand it--can't people just find a parking space and then walk to their desired location? You don't have to park right in front of the door everywhere you go.

I was very surprised and happy about this. I was able to roll up to a new empty rack this whole week. Before that I was locking my bike on top of an obviously abandoned bike at one of the racks that nobody else wanted to use, but it was a little tricky.

And I've been locking my bike day in day out all day for ten hours while I go to work with no problems, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about theft. Just make sure you get a good u-lock. I have the Kryptonite mini, and I use a cable to lock both my wheels and my seat as well.

Will she live? The dent in that guy's car looks pretty deep. Scary stuff.
It probably won't be for 100 years, and we won't be around for it, but the day will come when cars no longer have carte blanche all over our streets and its everyone else's job to get out of the way or die. I wish that time was now...but, just gotta be careful out there.

If this was a club that catered to rap music and a different crowd then the clowns on this site would be singing a different tune. Lesson here? Any clown in this city can be bought with a beer.

That is a very anti-city rant. In fact I am going to take it a step further and tell you that mentality is actually unsustainable. In a sustainable urban environment, apartments are above shops/restaurants/bars. They coexist. In order for a bar, shop, or restaurant to "only be allowed in areas away from homes" they would have to be in a shopping center miles away from residences, which is, wait for it...what a suburb is.

I'm relatively new to the Path system but every morning it comes like clockwork every few minutes. I don't think I've waited more than 2 minutes for a train to come. I have to say, so far, it is much more efficient than the subway, which seemed way more irregular when I lived over there.

Not a complaint, but I noticed the Path moves kinda slow and ramble-y, especially between Newport - Christopher st. I get nauseous on it. There must be a lot of twists and turns in the tunnels or something. I'm only on the train for like 10 minutes so I can't complain really but I'm just saying it's something I've noticed.

Traffic calming would be needed to deter people from speeding....speed bumps, or traffic lights.

Second, I have been walking home from Grove at night to Lafayette and have been tempted to walk down Jersey ave into LSP. The only problem is that it is desolate and creepy. Pedestrian safety and crime is what's on my mind. If someone attacks you there, good luck trying to get help.
If it was a regular well lit roadway it would be much better to walk and commute for those that are trying to make it to the path station or downtown. Although the downtown residents have expressed that this will create a problem the fact of the matter is that Lafayette is plagued with traffic trying to get TO downtown. It should be expected that DT jersey city will continue to be more and more congested with more people trying to live near NYC. If you want more space or less traffic there are beautiful huge spacious homes with driveways all over, Bergen Lafayette and Greenville, not to mention cheaper!

Whenever I walk home from work to Lafayette, I always take the LSP route. I find Grand St to be extremely desolate, especially when you hit that area with the bizarro Pathmark sprawlburbia parking lot, gas station, and used car lot. Then going down Pacific I find a little dodgy until you get to Communipaw Ave. The LSP way is much, much nicer. Of course, I would never walk either way after dark, just bike or bus, but since it's been light out it's totally fine. I see several other people walking and biking the LSP way; on the contrary I have walked down the Grand st way and not seen a single human being. Just the drone of cars zooming by. A nicer pedestrian path is all that is needed, like someone else said. It's a little janky now is all.

I hope this does not happen. I bike through there on my way to and from the Path train specifically to avoid car traffic. I see a lot of bikers, runners, and walkers going through there. It's quiet and a nice break from traffic. It's already bad enough that cars can drive through LSP at all. What they should do is make a nicer pedestrian path connecting it with Jersey Ave.

It should be well known at this point in time that more roads = more traffic. More people just "passing through" instead of people out walking and enjoying their environment. And crossing Grand is already scary enough as it is.

Yes, they are. I think you know the answer to that. In manhattan they sometimes give out tickets for it. But, in the same fashion that pedestrians jaywalk all the time, it's sort of a testament to how traffic lights only exist because of cars, and don't really take into consideration other modes of movement...however this is a whole different issue.

is the PATH really going up to 2.75, because that would be obscene. that's more than MTA which is a far more extensive network, plus the PATH doesn't link up with anything so you always have to do double-fare, whether it's path-to-mta, path-to-lightrail, path-to-bus. the path is convenient for shuttling people across the hudson but it's not much more than that.

Jersey City kicks off 'green week' by opening bike lane on Grove Street

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy kicked off Green Week, part of the city's "Project 365" campaign, at City Hall this morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new bike lane.
The pilot bike path, on Grove Street from Christopher Columbus Drive to Grand Street, will be open throughout the month of May. Today, the first cyclists tried out the new lane.
If the bike lane proves to be successful, lanes may be opened throughout the city to promote sustainability and alternate means of transportation year-round.
"We believe it makes our city a little more environmentally friendly," said the mayor.
Jersey City was named one of the greenest cities in the U.S. recently, and was one of the finalists for the 2012 Siemens Sustainable Community Award. Sixty percent of residents take alternate means of transportation, like walking or mass transit and now they will be able to bike safely, at least through a small stretch of Jersey City.
The city is also partnering with Bike JC and the Hudson Transportation Mangagment Association on an education campaign that to promote safety for drivers and cyclists.Resized Image

"small stretch" indeed. it's like 2 minutes of riding in this bike lane. what happens at the end of May? are they going to keep it? expand it? it will be sad if they take it away after only a month. i hope this is more than just posturing. i appreciate the bike lane for what it represents but there needs to be more of them in order for it to make sense. oh well, one bike lane is better than none!

:)

PS - ianmac - I am not suggesting that you are 25, just a manner of speaking...

I don't think is necessarily a product of age as much as philosophy and attitude.

Some people have a lot of money and might, despite everything, end up driving a Honda Civic and others might end up buying a Bugatti Veyron. Its probably not because some is 25 or 55, its probably just what someone values. But if someone wants a Bugatti and can afford to buy the Bugatti, even if the Honda Civic gets better gas mileage and has lower maintenance costs, why would someone who wants the Bugatti get the Civic?

Yes, in this analogy Jersey City is the lower cost car, but its sensible and well built, while Manhattan is the shiny luxury car, that is overpriced and impractical.

I agree with that...not necessarily age, but attitude. some people just get it into their heads that they "need" a certain thing no matter how impractical it seems and they can't think outside of that bubble. like when i was applying to colleges way back when and i just thought i needed to go to one certain school or my life would be over...and it totally wasn't and it didn't matter, lol. still though i have to laugh at this article..."we couldn't afford our rent so we bought a 1 million dollar apartment in dumbo"??!
