The 22-year-old son of Jersey City Schools Superintendent Charles T. Epps Jr. is in critical but stable condition after falling out of a moving car in Hoboken early Sunday morning, officials said yesterday.

Jonathan C. Epps suffered head trauma after tumbling from the car in front of 79 Park Ave. at 2:41 a.m., officials said. He remained in the intensive care unit at the Jersey City Medical Center yesterday, surrounded by family members and friends, officials said.

A spokeswoman for Jersey City Public Schools declined to comment, saying it is a private matter for the family.

Jonathan Epps, whose mother is County Prep Principal Barbara Mendolla, is a former student of St. Peter's Preparatory High School in Jersey City and studied at St. Peter's College until 2006, officials said.

"I am saddened to hear about Jonathan Epps' accident," Hudson County Schools of Technology Superintendent Frank Gargiulo said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire HCST, my heart goes out to his family, and I pray that he recovers fully."
