any chance they can put cameras in the park? It would help on multiple fronts as I think the late night antics are less than noble...

Re: New NJ Pension Study

IL is leading the pack of state's in real trouble, but NJ is not far behind. They can only raise taxes so much - at some point they either need to cut govt expidentures or break the news that people won't get what they were expecting in retirement. There's only so much you can do when the money ain't there and the stock market isn't helping at all...

so does this mean that all these $1mm rowhouses are going to see taxes go up $7200? Somehow this seems like a lot given that most already pay $12k give or take in property taxes.

Re: Swimming

spoke to someone in the rec dept today who said that they'll know this Friday when/if Pavonia and Johnston will be opened this summer.

Jamie @ 547 5690 is in charge I was told, so anyone who wants to call and lobby feel free!

I'm hoping they can get some outdoor swimming options for JC residents as it's a scorcher thus far...

I drove by Johnston and it looks like the construction is pretty far along. To not open at all given the heat this summer is not acceptable.

As far as I can tell there are no outdoor public pool options
if Johnston and Pavonia remain shuttered...

Dug a bit more and it looks like there will be an outdoor pool on Johnston Ave near Grand St. I think it is under construction so not sure when it will open. Hopefully a good set up for JC residents...

Is the Pavonia Pool closed down? I don't see it on this
list and was wondering if there are any outdoor swimming options short of the Hudson??

It's a shame if there are no outdoor pools given the hot summers; someone tell me I'm missing something...

I would highly recommend Dr Lawrence O'Mallon. He's in the heights, but not far by car from downtown. He has been in JC 25 years or so as a pediatric dentist. Their office is 3183 Kennedy Blvd and phone is 201 798 2322.

Re: Maternity - NJ Paid Leave Policies

unfortunately NJ is one of only 4 states that offers paid leave. NY doesn't have the same benefits. So it sounds like the key is the location of the company and not the state residence of the employee....

does anyone know their way around this one? If you live in JC but work in NYC for a large company, are you able to take the 6 weeks of NJ paid leave on top of the 12 weeks you get from federal laws? Thanks for any info...

Re: Potholes and blistered car tires

to penalize all the residents and non-speeders by keeping Columbus a warzone is ridiculous. If speeding is a problem, station cops with radar on Columbus. A few months of that and people will alter their driving speed accordingly.

All I do for the most part is cross Columbus and those 30 feet require prayer and crossed fingers.

I'm going to pursue reimbursement for my two tires, we'll see...

So with this additional $572 per 100K assessed; how much of an increase in property taxes is it over last year? Also, hat is the total dollar amount of tax now per 100K assessed?

Someone said they went up 11% last year. Just trying to get a sense of the magnitude. Thanks for any info...

Re: Maybe there should be sales or renter's tax in JC

aren't renters effectively paying for the taxes thru rent?

If taxes go up, landlords raise rents. Landlords aren't looking to lose money.

I do agree that it makes for political apathy given the short stays from most renters...

Low profile tires are especially susceptible from what I'm told. I had an old truck for years and never had this issue.

Now I've got a nicer/newer car with 235/45 R17 tires and they clearly aren't meant for the 3rd world driving conditions around here.

Nother regressive tax compliments of JC...

Anyone else having problems with tire blisters due to the abundance of meteor sized potholes?

I discoverd blisters on both driver side tires and will have to get them replaced. I drive less than 2000 miles a year, so no I'm not pleased. I'm convinced these are compliments of Chris Columbus Drive.

Curious if people bother to insure against this sort of thing, I'm told there are options out there.

This should come as no surprise. People have to remember that the bank selling you product is not your friend. End of story.

The problem is that the financial machine has undone so much regulation. This case is going to be tough to prove as GS will just say they were hedging their position, not taking a speculative short position. Nonetheless will be interesting to see how this affects their sterling reputation.

this is truly awful. It goes back to the lack of beat cops around here. Healy will say there's no money for hiring police officers. Quit wasting it on city council cars and bogus jobs for relatives. Maybe you could get some more police on the streets with that freed up money. What's it going to take around here?

Re: Broken car windows all over

Home away from home

I have noticed a ton of broken car window glass around downtown. It seems the perps have no fear of being caught, even though the police did recently get 1 guy. There have been big waves of car break ins for the last 3-4 months around downtown. If the perps thought there was a police presence they'd focus elsewhere. It seems to me they figure the odds of beat cops around downtown at night are minimal.

Does anyone else find this amazing? Has their been an increase in car break ins in other parts of JC, Heights other? I have no idea, but it's really depressing to walk around and see so much broken glass. They don't even clean it up, it just gets spread around...

I think the problem with the NYT Real Estate section is that every couple weeks they write up a puff piece on some new development in JC. This one is no different: cheap, close to city, amenities, blah blah. All geared to get nyc yuppies to bargain hunt here in JC.

The NYT would have a lot more credibility in regards to JC if they actually wrote about interesting people/places in JC instead of hack pieces ghost written by the property developers...

I was just trying to find the number of the driving range to see if they were open given the weather outside.

Can't believe that the range is a goner. A nine hole golf course is great, but I really think it's a mistake to nuke the range. They'll lose a ton of business from people who have 40 minutes for a quick bucket of balls. From a game improvement standpoint, the range is key.

Even if they could squeeze in a small range or a 125 yard chipping range that would be great. I will miss the range more than appreciate a nine holer...

According to zillow that place 225 Palisade Ave was sold for $550K in 10/2008.
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/225 ... y-NJ-07306/88859830_zpid/

If he got a loan for $530K then he put down $20k or less than 5% of the purchase price. Not a lot of wiggle room should RE prices head south. This seems like a case study in why the US real estate market is still in trouble.

I doubt that place would fetch $550K today...

a month or so back there was a rash of broken car windows around VVP.

Haven't noticed too many lately, but the the dogsh%t index is sky high. Tough to say which is a bigger negative...

As always, JC could use beat cops on the streets!
