I remember when the school was under local (city hall) control. It became a political patronage machine. I support elections.

The municipal election is next May. It is important that people make this an issue for the Mayor, Ward E, and at-large councilmembers. By the way, I have a friend who relocated to Bayonne. A new group of people were dealing drugs on his block. My friend called the cops and the problem was solved. No more drug dealing.

Bret Schundler is a cunning politican. He will say anything to be elected. I attended council meetings when he was mayor. There was more corruption under Schundler than Cunningham or Healy.

The Limelight, now a disco was a church is New York. There has been many arrests for drugs and other activities. That is why I stand by my earlier position of having the building dismantled and reassembled to use as a church. Outside of the Northeast, the Catholic populatin is growing and building are needed.

It is a sacred place. It should not be changed into a secular building. The Archdiocese should donate the builing to another doicese that needs a church. It should be dismantled and reassembled. It is too beautiful and sacred to be anything else.

I used to visit an aunt years ago in Trenton. Then Trenton was surrounded by farms. These farms have now become housing units. I agree Trenton housing stock is beautiful. However, instead of rebuilding Trenton, people bought new housing on former farm land. Shame.

Re: Rent Control Apartment

Any five unit apartment building is under rent controlled. Newer construction and four units or less are exempted. The city sets how much money the owner can raise the rents, which is usually 3% or less. By comparison, the small homeowner have received a 40% increase in taxes since the Healy Administration (city, county, schools).

Re: Jersey City tax bite is kept to status quo - taxpayers have been spared a municipal tax bump

That would not work. The abated properties impact the value of regular property. However, abated properties are not subject to a reval. In the 1988 reval, my property was compared in value to abated properties. My taxes went up, not the abated property. We should have an income tax that is deducted from the state income tax. Everyone then would pay, not just the homeowners.

In 2005 my property taxes were $46.06 per thousand of assessed value, the city portion was $19.30. In 2008, the taxes zoomed to $55.49 and the city portion is $25.47. Taxes have increased!

Jeff I agree with you. The city must eliminate abatements, besides not funding the Board of Ed and the county, abatements are not ratables which means it doesn't add to the ratable base. This is the way the county strikes the citys budget. A quarter of the is invisible in terms of ratables - the higher the ratable base, the lower the taxes are for everyone. By the way, Gerry McCann gave away abatement when he was mayor and lower the abatement agreements that was struck by the previous administration. The lowering of Merrill Lynch from 2% to 1% cost the city $11 million.
