Re: should Jersey City create and implement on-street bicycle lanes?
Home away from home

Why do people compare JC with NYC? You don't need a car in NY with subways, buses, and cabs. I know families with 3 and 4 cars in JC because jobs are only available with a car. I cannot imagine parents with children under five during winter traveling on bikes, especially with sick children. Bikes will not replace cars. There are safety guidelines for children in cars, none exists for parents transporting children with bikes because it would be dangerous, especially infants.

I am against abatements because they are not ratables. The county not the city figures out our taxes. They uses the city's value (property) but tax abatements are excluded from this formula. More than $2.8 billion is withheld from the ratable base which makes taxes higher for the regular taxpayer. That $2.8 billion does not include churches, parks, or public buildings just tax abatements.

The city council renewed the redevelopment status of Exchange Place seveal years ago when Vega was still on the council. The redevelopment period expired. This was done because one parcel of land was still not developed. Naturally, I spoke against this. JC is writing laws that benefits particular developers. More than one quarter of JC is tax abated. This is the reason our tax base is high. Even the State of NJ wrote a report in 2010 on the improper use of tax abatements in JC and elsewhere.

Before the city adopted bike lanes, there should have been a census of bikes, cars or any type of vehicle that uses the streets. And that census should have also included cars that exit the turnipke either going to NYC, to advoid 14C or the waterfront. The problem of traffic becomes harder when streets are closed off for parades or street repairs. Yes, I do agree there are too many cars but comments that people should bike are not realistic. Do you bike your children to school, or buy 20 bags of grocery with a bike? Suppose you are disable, or elderly or suffer for arthritis or have any number of medical conditions that requires a car for transportation, are you still suppose to use a bike? Using a bike in the rain or snow or biking over a pot hole has to be dangerous. The city adopted the bike lanes so it could claim it is a green city. Only time will tell how many accidents will happen between bikes, cars, and the walking public.

Jersey City has too much traffic to safely have bike lanes. Just because JC gov't has created bike lanes doesn't mean it will be used well. Let's not forget, there will be more traffic on Grove St after the Boy's Club is converted to 468 condos! The city just amended their tax abatement, so look for more problems between cars and bikes. Unlike NYC which has wide streets, our streets are narrow.

Suggestion-before you put dirt in your urns, weight it down first with broken bricks or gravel. The drainage is good for your plants and the thiefs might think overwise due to the added weight.

I grew up in Hoboken - double and triple parking was a way of life. I have noticed from reading the newspaper, Little India, has the least amount of crime including Downtown. It is difficult to mugged someone if people are on the street. Too many witnesses.

When I shop, I usually bring home 25 +bags, yes I use plastic. Then I use the plastic for garbage. I would have to use a lot of water to rewash cloth bags. So my water bill would increase. Maybe this is the reason the city wants us to use cloth bags, more revenue for water.

If you are buying for a family, plastic bags are more convenient than paper, especially in bad weather. No shopper wants a wet paperbag. I predict people with cars will bring their business to stores in Bayonne (Stop and Shop or Shoprite).

There are projects that have been approved but not built. All of these projects will bring in more auto traffic. Most of the streets in JC are extremely narrow, I know there are exceptions. But I cannot see how cars and bikes can manage safely on our narrow streets.

An atheist will never be elected to an higher political office. I mean President, Senate, or Governor. The masses do not trust anyone who doesn't pray to God for guidance. I personally would not want a surgeon operating on me without faith in God.

There is a saying: For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't, no proof is possible. However, I must add there were people like Edith Stein, an atheist who later became a canonized Saint. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Stein

People on this website sometimes have selective memories, millions died in communist atheist country called the Soviet Union. This former empire outlawed religion, killed more than 1,200 priests, stole church property and it estimated to have murdered 20 million people. It encouraged children to turn it their members if the children discovered their families saying or teaching prayers. Neither, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini were religious figures, two of them were known atheists but they slaughter millions. The death figures are staggering over 60 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties million people died. While the Catholic Church is facing scandal now as it did in the past, more young men are entering the seminary. http://www.dioceseofnashville.com/a-priesthood-growing.htm/
Religion and alive and well!

This is part of a web site that I have on the violation of the first amendment concerning religion.
While the different kingdoms of Europe were pouring their money into arms, the Catholic Churches throughout Europe built hospitals and universities. And the people who taught at these universities were basically members of religious orders. Below is a small sample of religious people who shaped the unknown into modern science:

?Benedictine monk Basil Valentino is the founder of modern chemical pharmacology;
?Nicolas Copernicus was a faithful clergyman, who wrote poems in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is credited for modern astronomy;
?Father Piazzi discovered asteroids, he catalog over 7,000 stars;
?St. Thomas Aquinas wrote three treaties on chemical subjects and coined the term amalgam;
?Father Athanasius Kircher, SJ, scientist, recognize the presence what we now call microbes;
?Bishop Nicholas Stensen discovered the duct of the parotid gland;
?Father Abbe Hauy, father of Crystallography demonstrated electrical phenomena with lightning;
?Professor Gordon, Benedictine monk constructed first practical electrical machine;
?Augustian monk Gregor Mendel is the father of heredity.

Furthermore, Civil Rights in the 1960's happened because the Black Christian Churches were the backbone of the movement.

Religion civilized society.

Robert Byrne is a honorable man, but he has tenure. Which means he is free to do his job without political pressure. More employees in critical positions need the safety net of tenure. I have seen previous mayors replaced employees before they reach tenure. Sadly, one day he will retire and the new city clerk will be under the pressure of the sitting mayor.

Seven cars broken into in front of St. Aloysius Church
Home away from home
Home away from home

Upon exiting the Church after services this morning I observed that at least seven cars on both sides of West Side Avenue had their windows broken and
glass and debris strewn about. This is between Belmont and Kensington Avenues by the entrance of Lincoln park. Apparently thousands of dollars in damages to all cars were done without notice being taken. Surely car alarms went off. After calling the JC Police an officer responded and someone told him there were at least seven cars broken into and he responded, somewhat wearily, he could only do one car at a time. That is true but the bad guys did them all in one shot.

You cannot legally meld budgets from two different taxing agencies. The problem - people run for office who rarely attends meetings and do not know the parameters of the office. Before anyone runs for office, they should attend meetings for a least a year.

The town of Paterson told parade organizers Paterson cannot afford the $100,000 it will take to have the Dominican parade.

Mentally unstable people are treated at area hospitals. The Medical Center is downtown . However, I have no knowledge who is seeking treatment. As far as social services, speak the to the County. Traditionally, the county has offered treatment for unstable people. The facility is in Secaucus.
