Are people in live in Manhattan snobs or elitists or judgmental if they don't hang out on Staten Island or in the Bronx? Or are they just realistic about what is close and convenient?

Not venturing into BL and GV on foot is a safety issue, not a cowardly, narrow minded one. I'm sorry, how about you walk around in camden in the middle of the night - I mean, unless you are narrow minded or prejudice.

I went to college and graduate school in Newark for years. I would walk to the train station at 2AM after hanging out with fiends on MLK drive at NJIT and Rutgers. I visit friends in Harlem and Irvington, as well as many other supposedly dangerous areas. I know a bunch of tiny little white girls that have an art gallery on Danforth, and others who walk deep into Marion each evening. I know a girl in a wheelchair that does laps at the track at Lincoln Park, by herself, at night.

Not every one is scared of their own shadow, and afraid of brown people.

While I agree on the traffic enforcement, your neighborhood is not yours. It belongs to the entire city.

They need to patrol the plaza a bit better. Drunk yuppies are using the picnic tables as loitering areas and almost started a brawl when they were being put away.

I get a much different vibe from a lot of downtownies. I know many that have never even tried anything outside the immediate area, and have never been outside in the open air in JC wwest of Division St.

Good for you for actually exploring a bit, but you are very atypical for a transplant.

If you go to Montelelone, just walk down two more blocks further West and have lunch or dinner at Spathagiri. Fantastic Indian, with a varied menu. I alternate between dosa and the various curries. And maybe stop at the sweet shop a bit further for some dhokla, a cornbread like savory cake made with chickpea flour and drizzled with ghee and chiles.

15 Fox Place is great. Next time you want a nice relaxing lowbrow night, try the New Park Tavern. Burgers, fries, killer corned beef, and cheap booze.

The talk about being afraid to venture out is laughable. I've lived in this town all my life. I'm a little guy, a geek, was an honors student, and have never been bothered once on the street. Now ask me if I ever got hit my any of the assholes that later go kicked out of my nice prep school.

Violence tends to be like on like. Black on black, low income on low income, gang member on gang member. If you have this much fear, go back to the burbs and make room for real city dwellers, not people afraid to venture more than five blocks from Grove.

I rest my case.

Provincial yuppies that can't recognize a good thing when they see it. Little India is a jewel in the entire state, let alone the town. Better Indian food, and more varied styles than anywhere outside the actual subcontinent. That's not worth a literal two minute walk from the JSq PATH on a weekday?

Andreas Salumeria is a another gem, in the heights. Monteleones has better pastries than the world famous Carlos in Hoboken, at better prices, and their rumcake is literally more addictive than meth.

How many people have bothered to even go to Lincoln Park, which is beautiful and vibnrant. Burger and drinks at the Park Tavern? Grits and eggs and Lou's on Ocean? The Mozz Boss in Greenville?

I'll repeat. Narrow minded, provincial little fools.

"People just like us."

LOL..

Way to show narrow mindedness.

I still can't believe how many people I meet that have lived in DTJC for years now, and have never even visited Little India, or gotten a pastry from Monteleone.

The city would pay the maintenance and operating expenses anyway.

$22MM to $24MM today is worth more than $45MM over that many years at a very modest rate of return. The city would probably pay more to build it itself and float bonds for it.

I figured that, since sticky rice crystalizes do quickly. But leaving them out overnight won't be good either. I figure letting them cool, and then packing them in a container that can be vacuum locked by my Food Saver may keep them from being too bad even if refrigerated. It's worth the experiment anyway.

Re: Koro Koro rice ball cafe

I tried it last night with my girlfriend. She was extremely skeptical, but with the first bite, was won over. The packaging has a bit of a trick to it, but the demonstrations help, and it really does keep the nori crisp even though the rice is warm and moist.

They conveniently mark each wrapper with the filling so you can eat them in the order you want. The mild ones really should be eaten before hitting the spicier ones.

I had had the yama chicken, Cuban and spicy salmon. My girlfriend had three of the vegetarian options, including the Indian, which she liked best.

I would definitely go again, and I am glad a non-pizza, non-deli, non-thai, non taco option is available for a quick meal. I am tempted to grab a few and see how they refrigerate and reheat, for the couple of days a week when I get up too late to pack a lunch.

$22MM today is worth that much over time. That's the magic of time value of money. It's not an inordinate amount of growth. I would be shamed if I couldn't double the money in my 401k over the course of 25 years.

I put away money into my retirement accounts that is as much as the entire low end gross salary of a few of those tech positions. And I am not a super specialist of any kind.

The tech and engineering offered salaries are pitiful.

Competent server techs make quadruple that in this area. The benefits can't bridge that gap. Even the plumber entry is a joke. Helpers make more than that. A real plumber is at least triple that, IF the benefits are golden.

The only jobs with halfway decent ranges are the office and outside staff. The rest are in wishful thinking land. Actual real engineers or qualified tech workers will not work for that pittance.

Server tech at under $35K? Good luck with that. That's not even Help Desk salary level.

A little Greek place would be nice. It would remove the stain on the town that It's Greek to Me was. And I think it would be popular. Salads, vegetable dishes, simple grilled meats and seafood, pastries, and coffee.

Maybe a rack of grab and go spreads, dips, cheeses and olives, as well as some dry good and packaged, refrigerated frozen meals.

They just tore down the old unemployment building across the street, and the area is mostly low-rise, so will remain pleasantly low density.

In terms of aesthetics, it will spruce up nicely. It's a nice area overall, and the grammar school is very good. I went there as a kid, and it has always been a leader in gifted programs in the city. It is also an extremely diverse neighborhood.

I live down the hill from that building, by the Newkirk/Summit intersection, and a new building like that will be a good addition to the area. A few upper income residents will help change over the local dime store style convenience stores to better retail outlets. The storefront stretch between Sip and Academy on Summit is pretty bad.

Maybe it'll also result in actual quality of life patrols to keep drunken derelicts from hanging out on the front of the municipal courthouse after hours.

Re: Jersey City considers turning Newark Avenue into pedestrian plaza

People already avoid that stretch of Newark due to all the jackasses double parking on the westbound side, or pulled up and stopped in the lane on the eastbound, sometimes partially on the sidewalk. Often you will get a double parked car and one stopped on the opposite side at the same time. So, it it's that bad anyway, why NOT make it pedestrian only?

Stupid partisan or personality based outrage is idiotic when there are actual substantive criticisms that can be made. Stooping to whining about unfunny jokes, or trumped up outrage shows a preference for scoring points rather than actually talking about important issues.

Re: Replace FOL

The Trust Fund and UEZ money was never paid, and that was also when the city lost UEZ funds because they sat on them.

The $5.000 is a joke since replacing the railign and fire doors would cost six figures.

I am not a member of the FoL, but they are the ones documenting the promises and transactions over the last twenty years. The mayor just promised $30MM to a private company to let THEM profit from it. As a native resident, I consider it another mark against the weasel in the mayor's office.
