Re: New PATH Station - Marion

It would cost taxpayers no money. It would be part of the PATH system. Unfortunately, we pay for things that are not related to transportation, such as the new World Trade building.

I guess, we like to ignore the fact, that Americans are from immigrants who were very poor and considered criminals. A little story, when building the first Catholic Church in JC, the criminal element from Sing Sing prison, gave donations. The criminal elements then was Irish immigrants. Later, Italians and Jews immigrants also became criminal elements.

If you attend the board meetings, as you know public comments are not aired, you will hear teachers from schools in Greenville and elsewhere complaining their have no books or their schools have no heat. The money is being earmarked downtown, it is not being spread around evenly. I was shocked to hear these comments.

Unfortunately, JC never protected its history. It is older than the state of NJ. When JC turned 300 years old, there was an exhibition in Journal Square with many artifacts. The city even produced a book on the subject. I inquired about these artifacts when the city turned 350 years old, I wanted to include them in my video. I was quietly told these artifacts were sold off. I cannot mention the person who told me this, the only artifacts worthwhile is a Dutch language bible. Smaller town in NJ have preserved their artifacts. Even the Apple Tree House is taking forever to be restored. The process started in 1989 when the county gave $375,000 for the Apple Tree House. If the city took better care of what it had, it would be a reason to visit JC.

The city is full of motorists who get ticketed or booted all the time. I remember a friend telling me about the time a family member passed away. Family members came to the wake and funeral and the city booted the cars. This city is hostile to cars yet I do not see public officials giving up their cars for bikes. I disagree about the city having enough garages. For every person who uses a bike, there are people in JC with two or more cars. If I visit a city, I want to make sure my car is safe not booted or ticketed.

People visit JC for two 3 reasons: #1-It is cheaper to stay here than NYC, we are a hotel route. #2- Some travel to visit Liberty State Park and the Science Center, parking is available there. # A small number do research at the main library. Over a century ago, people did travel to JC especially to visit the urban parks. I have historical postcards with comments from the visitors who saw Van Vorst Park, Hamilton Park, and Lincoln Park. Those visitors stayed at the hotel on Jersey and Montgomery Streets, now a condo. Now visitors are shopping Indian Square, I see out of state license plates there. Some people park their car at the White Castle parking lot which is closeby, their cars are removed by management. More people would visit Indian Square if parking was available.

Because I said we need more parking in JC for tourist makes me an angry person? Boy, you are some lawyer and I definitely hope you never become a judge. The fact is NYC which is a destination city has plenty of parking garages plus the subway. If JC wants to be serious about tourism, it must have garages. I disagree with the statement that JC have enough parking. We are reading on this site, people asking if there is parking available somewhere and these people live here.

I have been to many cities in the USA, my husband and I travel by car. Every place we visited had parking available including restaurants, stores, parks, museums, etc. The lack of parking lots will hurt JC, tourists do not travel by bikes.

I placed a video of Michael Shurin on this view. I did not videotape it, Michael goes all over JC videotaping things that are outside the norm of most JC. This is another point of view. Today on the news I read about middle eastern religious fanatics who burned the house and killed 3 people who did not agree with that person view of religion. So you don't agree with Michael Shurin's subject? Who made the chair of what is right or wrong? Michael Shurin's Hudson View has a page in which comments are attached, have you notified him or would you like just to scream and yell at me? By the way, I am responsible for the things I videotape with my name.

Re: Plan to limit public comment at Jersey City council meetings draws Fulop's ire

The reason I brought up the past, is because the same thing is happening again. There is no reason for this administration to give KRE a 30 year abatement when the property is next to the PATH while it is also receiving $10 million for redevelopment bonds. Also, there is no reason to issue 30 year extension to Salem Lafayette giving that development a 66 year abatement. History in Jersey City keeps repeating itself. Yes, it is a lovely day, I just returned from Liberty Park, hopefully the casino gambling will not destroy the park.

Heights, you must be a Fulop supporter with a city job. I care about the people who live here, I have seen my neighbors throughout the years leave or lose their homes through high taxes. Recently, I received the Annual Debt Statement, we are still paying for bonds that previous mayors floated that is costing us millions today. One of these bonds is the Fiscal Year Adjustment bonds floated in 1991 for $128.9 million. The bonds were refinanced again in 2006, costing taxpayers money. So did these bonds fix sewerage, no. It went to pay cops salary while then McCann was lowering the tax abatement agreement for 101 Hudson St. Our gross debt is nearly $900 million. Most of our debt is related to paying terminal leave since the 1990s. I am not against debt but honestly why should we subsidize developers while our cost continue to rise? The only reason we receive a $2.1 tax decrease this year is due to the fact some abatements expired and their ratable base was added to total base the county use to strike the budget. But Jersey City is still has less value compared to the 1988 reval when we were between $6 to $7 billion. We are below the $6 billion thanks to abatements. It is not my job as a taxpayer to make sure developers receive a safety net from taxpayers.

So you are comfortable with buying an abatement for 20 or 30 years in prime locations, micro apartments in Van Vorst, changing zoning at Unico Towers, adding more job titles than Healy had (by the way, there is now a new job title for assistant of Cultural Affairs), or taking the EMS contract from the Medical Center? I really can go on. I speak on issues that is important to my pocketbook or my community.

You have this avatar 'Stop electing idiots,' but when people raise questions on the behavior of Fulop or the council, you flipped out. So it is OK to attack Healy but not Fulop or his council? Personally, I voted for him and got many neighbors to do the same. The difference is, I don't accept bad governance from Fulop or his council but you do.

What is positive about neighbors losing their homes (2,300 according to the tax collector just this year alone) while the city gives out lucrative abatements? The city cares about affordable houses not affordable taxes, the reason for the 85% municipal increase in five years. There are paid spokespeople whose job is to sugarcoat the truth, that is not my job.

At least when I mouth off, I sometimes save the city money. When a previous council wanted to purchase the present board of ed building, the price was over $12 million. But when I discover the developer appealed his taxes, the property value was practically nothing. The council heard me, renegotiated the price and the taxpayers saved $3.1 million on the purchase price. Other activists have done similar. This is the reason there should not be a time limit. The council needs to better organize their agenda before they silence the public.

Richardson was a Councilmember who didn't care about anything except herself, as I saw her on more than one occasion throw up her hands and say "whatever!" when people attending the meetings got upset with her, and was a double-dipper, collecting both her police pension and council salary.

She was totally against the concept of politicians holding just one public job at a time, saying that it was impossible to make a living on just one public job, without indicating the possibility about the novel concept of getting a private sector job instead while serving on the council (like Fulop did). Anything good she did was well more than cancelled out by her negative qualities. GOOD RIDDANCE!

I understand your disappointment when people hold two or more jobs but she was effective in keeping late minutes items off the agenda. This council needs to do that, before they curtail public comments.

It would also be nice if candidates attended council meetings before they are elected so they do know what they are talking about. Mia's letter is right about that.

There is that woman on crutches, who comes to every meeting (at least she's come to every meeting I've been to and others have told me she's always there) and asks questions about nearly EVERY resolution and really contributes to the dragging out of the meetings. I don't think she ever speaks for longer than 10 minutes but collectively she must add an hour's time to the meeting. Really annoying. Don't get me wrong, she seems like a sweet person, and I'm sorry she has to walk around on crutches, but my respect for the elderly does not apply when it comes to her hogging the microphone.

I'd name the names of a few others that act similarly at these meetings as well, but I don't want to be sued for defamation as I'm sure some of them read this board. It is all nothing but grandstanding in my opinion because there is no way all these resolutions affect them.

Being the head of a neighborhood association does not make you an expert or qualified to speak for the masses either, I don't care how long you've lived in Jersey City. I don't know if there's a neighborhood association where I live but if there is, the head of it does not speak for me, I'll say that right now.

The person you are referring to is call Catherine. She hasn't been to a council meeting since Sandy hit and the elevators were not working. We are talking about 2 years almost.
