True. Looks like Flintstone housing.

Low and moderate housing doesn't have to look like people live in Bedrock... not much thought put into these homes

Re: Barack Obama for President
Home away from home
Home away from home

Arianna Huffington doesn't see the big picture. McCain will temper his rhetoric soon also and move to the middle. Ms. Huffington's counterparts will say the same of McCain. The middle might for losers as she outlined, but these "losers" win elections.

Call it a "flip / flop" or whatever. We've reduced the American intellect to "buzz" words and slogans.

When politicians wedge themselves into a box with a rigid policy or idea, they get burned by their opponents when "revisions" or "modifications" are made. The fact that politicians are "forced" into these rigid stances to appease their political bases results in the shallow sound-bites that inhibit real debate. Huffington doesn't see a debate, but instead an ultimatum that Obama must follow.

Getting totally out of Iraq sounds easy, but it isn't. Logistically, it is quite an undertaking that involves tens of thousands of support troops and those crooks from Halliburton. Likewise, an egress cannot be made without "securing" positions that are turned over. If those positions are not secured, then American cargo planes will be shot down and support troops will die.

Even after Obama gets us out if he is elected, there will be thousands of "advisors" fighting alongside the Iraqi forces until a loose federation is formed or Iraq is partitioned. Either way, Obama sees the reality of the situation. Whether his 16 month timetable becomes a 20 month timetable depends on battle conditions in Iraq that political sages like Ms. Huffington cannot predict.

A hasty exit kills people and a protracted war kills people... the only politician that understood this about Iraq was Clinton... and now, Obama.

Corner of Chestnut and Pavonia Avenues.

Not only reasonable, but the cleanest place (for an old facility) that I've ever seen. He was able to finally get my Toyota running right after having the dealership and another mechanic miss the problem.

His English is a bit hard to understand (he speaks Korean), but he is meticulous and reliable.

Absolutely. I grew up in a rotten neighborhood in JC, but Cub Scouts, Little League, and CYO made the difference. A decent percentage of us joined the military, went to college, or went to work. There was no magic solution except keeping busy and having some kind of structure in the home. Can't put this whole burden on teachers or law enforcement.

The city even had something like a sunshine fund that took the entire neighborhood in chartered buses to state parks and beaches when school was out. Seemed like a small price to pay to keep 30 preteens busy during the summer.

How is this news?

I wonder if anyone reading this thread remember who the Jersey City BONES were? Or the Sons of Marion? Or the Brothers of the Jersey City Heights? Historically, Jersey City has been a hotbed of gangs and cliques, and the responses to the gang culture have been ineffective, toothless, and lacking in real results.

Some kids will grow out of it and others will die or go to jail from it--no different from the past.

This is not The Wire... Welcome to Jersey City my friends. It's still an okay place to call home as long you don't mind the occasional B.S.

The dumbass' dog is doing what it's owner allows it to do without correction or trains it to do. Also, unneutered and unspayed dogs also present a problem in the runs as many fixed animals don't react well to unfixed dogs.

Probably a good idea to have a camera phone ready when you sense that someone is coming into the run with an aggressive dog or someone fitting a**hole's description comes into the run.

Thankfully, Rosie will recover fully and everyone else is aware of the a**hole.

Ms. Trezza should question her staff privately... I'll leave it that.

Whoever ends up receiving this shelter knows that there is so much work to be done in order to bring it up to code, but its potential is great. Jersey City residents should pull together and volunteer our services to help the receivers make this facility a showcase facility in the state. Plumbers, carpenters, metal workers and general contractors will be needed after "vandals" ransacked the place.

Closing it might mean that NJ State SPCA, the agency charged with ensuring compliance in the past, will stand to "profit" from this mess. The very agency that enabled the abuse should be held accountable.

Hudson County needs this shelter as local municipalities spend a lot of money sending their animals to Associated Humane in Newark.

The NJ State SPCA enabled these people to operate this way. Make no mistake, the NJ State SPCA knew that this place was bad news for many years, but an inspector pencil-whipped inspections in January (eyewitnesses). The volunteers' complaints fell on deaf ears until a lawyer was hired to force the State to do something. Shame on the NJ State SPCA!

The NJ State SPCA will show up now because the land is pretty valuable.

Volunteers contacted all of the local television news media last winter and they didn't want to follow up. Friggin jackels! They waited until animals were rotting in a ransacked facility.

Finally, these people are out of the animal business... Board Members are next.

I suppose because he "accidentally" hurt himself, he left dead animals at that facility to rot. Why did the authorities let this place operate for so long???

Just when you thought these animals suffered enough indignity, a concerned citizen without regard for his own job, documents the horror at the SPCA.

Rest in Peace - George Carlin, 1937-2008
Home away from home
Home away from home

He certainly will be missed.

George Carlin, the Grammy-Award winning standup comedian and actor who was hailed for his irreverent social commentary, poignant observations of the absurdities of everyday life and language, and groundbreaking routines like ?Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,? died in Santa Monica, Calif., on Sunday, according to his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He was 71.

CARLIN QUOTES:

As a matter of principle, I never attend the first annual anything.

Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck.

Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.

I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

I'm not concerned about all hell breaking loose, but that a PART of hell will break loose... it'll be much harder to detect.
[info][add][mail]
George Carlin
If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted?

It's never just a game when you're winning.

Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong.

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.

There's no present. There's only the immediate future and the recent past.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning.

30,000 to 40,000 for a sprinkler is way too much...

No more than 20,000 for three units... shop around a bit... the market has fallen on its butt outside of the county, and you may be able to find a company that will give you a break.

I am thinking about 5,000 dollars per unit which would be a fair price.

Any of the track housing construction built along Manila Avenue in the early 80's or the garbage put up in every vacant lot in the Heights, Greenville, JSQ, and Marion. These houses are constructed cheaply and quickly with wax and spit. In other words, anything that looks like this:

I lived in this town my whole life and remember when it was burning down in the 1970s. It's a shame that permits are being issued to built these cookie-cutter monstrosities.

If you live in one now, I mean no disrespect. The architects, investors, and the city are to blame.

This model is pretty popular lately:

With the kind of work that you're doing, you will be required to install the new sprinkler system. I suppose it won't hurt to appeal.

Also, ensure that your contractor seals all spaces around new romex wires, gas lines, sprinkler lines, and water/waste pipes between floors with fire retardant foam (red or orange) and caulking (red) before inspection to close walls with sheetrock.

You may have to subcontract the sprinkler system (directly connected to the city line in most cases) that you are installing also. Hopefully, your plumber may be able to do this.

Good luck.

Re: Bergen Lafayette: Police dog's jaws halt fleeing suspect
Home away from home

K-9 Units are invaluable for both civilian and military. It is also a non-lethal way to catch or find someone although I'd hate to be the person being "caught" by these dogs.

A lot of people don't realize how important they are in the military and the high regard and value placed upon the dogs. When the dogs are retired, the handler is given the option of keeping his partner. Years ago, retired dogs were used for training or euthanized. Attitudes have definitely changed.

The dogs' presence alone was the best deterrent at entry control points at bases in the war zone. During stateside apprehensions by military law enforcement, a non-compliant suspect changed his attitude when the k-9 unit arrived and the dog barked on the simple command of "talk sh*t."

One Air Force dog and his handler are credited with saving a former president's life when the animal detected an explosive packed vehicle along a travel route. The sophisticated explosives definitely would have killed a former president.

Although a few handlers and their dogs have been killed and wounded in the last few years because they are front and center during patrols, there is never a shortage of volunteers who want to become k-9 handlers.

Hats off!

I remember hearing stories that the whole area (including "the islands") used to be a large cemetery, and that site is all that remains of it.

It is a pretty interesting cemetery, and several of my family members are buried there. The county actually had an inmate cleanup crew working for a few hours in the cemetery last week, so the publicity is having some impact.

The cemetery never extended to the island section but does extend nearly to the railroad tracks beneath the Waldo Avenue pedestrian bridge. The long brick wall on Waldo Avenue above the cemetery is is the old foundation of a WWI armory that burned and lit up the sky for an entire night in the early 70's. For urban explorers, the Jersey City Cemetery is a must. You can still find old army relics on top of the largest crypt at the base of the wall.

Unfortunately, many of the crypts have been raided and the 100 to 150 year old remains were desecrated by sick grave robbers.

Waldo Avenue above the cemetery before 1920 was just an overgrown wooded area owned by Samuel Waldo who built three brownstones on the corner of Waldo and Magnolia Avenues in the 1860's.

Until it was cut down in 1871, an ancient tulip tree known as the "King of the Woods" stood on the brow of the hill overlooking the site of the Jersey City Cemetery. General Lafayette was said to have encamped under the shade of this tree in 1779.

* Tippy's in the Heights on Kennedy Blvd (garden center now)

* Rands Ice Cream between Pavonia and Newark Avenues. It was the best ice cream anywhere. People walked or drove from all parts of Jersey City for their sundaes (now a closed down check cashing place).

Hudson County SPCA shut down amid health violations

Hudson County SPCA shut down amid health violations
by Carly Baldwin

HUDSON COUNTY NOW
From the Jersey Journal newsroom
Saturday April 12, 2008, 1:27 PM

After being repeatedly slammed with health violations, the Hudson County SPCA was shut down last night under order of a Hudson County Superior Court.

The animals that were housed there - 15 dogs, one ferret and 24 cats, including a mother cat with kittens - were moved to Liberty Humane Society at around 6 p.m. last night. By order of the court, the HCSPCA is not permitted to take any new animals.

To the dismay of local animal activists, conditions at the HCSPCA have steadily worsened over the past year. In March, officials from the state Department of Health and Human Services cited the shelter with 24 violations ranging from improper disposal of feces to missing records.

An inspection report noted that conditions at the Johnston Avenue shelter had declined from the state's last inspection in November, 2007, when officials discovered that some of the shelter's cats and dogs were going without water and housed in cages that were too small.

Hector Carbajales, intern president of the HCSPCA, says he wasn't given a fair inspection by the state or the city.

More on the animals after the jump!

The animals found themselves a new home this morning at Liberty Humane Shelter, said Vivian Kiggins, executive director of LHS.

Kiggins said that, just from looking at the cats and dogs, a mix of Dalmatians, terriers, German Shepherds and pit bulls, they did not appear sick or malnourished. However, she said all the animals need to be examined by a veterinarian.

"Right now our first concern is trying to make sure they're safe and happy," she said.

Liberty Humane is the contract shelter for Jersey City animals. The HSPCA was contracted with Union City and North Bergen to receive their strays.

This not a permanent closure; the shelter will be closed temporarily until May 19th, when the HCSPCA is due to appear in Hudson County Superior Court.

Re: At fifth anniversary of Iraq War, locals concerned
Home away from home
Home away from home

As someone who was recalled into active duty and served in 2001 - 2002, I believe that I speak from some experience. While we approach the 4000th casualty in Iraq and some ready themselves for protests, keep in mind what matters while they are over there and we're here.

The most heartwarming thing from the states was a letter or care package from a stranger. The individual who sent me the package was from Jersey City and was someone who understood something about growing up here. The person sent me a big bag Swedish Fish and a short note. I know that it may seem pretty trivial, but many of us remember buying Swedish Fish for a penny from the local candy store (I am an oldtimer). I was reminded of my childhood and all that mattered in life: home. And it took a simple gesture to do that.

Supporting the troops is easy to do. Find a soldier from the area and send a note and photo from JCLIST's gallery. A pack of Violets (yuck), pumpkin seeds, or Swedish Fish will remind them of home. Even a recent Jersey Journal or Reporter will put a smile on that individual's face after a long day of patrolling. Trust me.

Sure, this war in Iraq is a mistake and many from my unit serving just before March 2003 felt that our job in Afghanistan was far from over, but out of loyalty we go. It is because of loyalty to our brothers and sisters patrolling in a wedge formation at 10 meter intervals through unknown terrain, that we do what we do. It isn't dedication to an abstract policy or mission.

Get off the wall!
Don't be stupid!
Get down!
Shut up!
Stop telegraphing your position!
Put that cigarette out!
86 that Ipod!
Who has a friggin cell phone? Gimme that thing!
That better not be what I think it is. Gimme that video game!
Map! How much further?

This is the typical jargon on patrol. No politics. Everyone comes homes in one piece.

The threat of secession was raised once before during the administration of Mayor Bret Schundler in the 1990s. Back then, the concept of creating a new municipality was raised when the administration wanted to draw new election district lines and planned to move a section of the Hilltop to Downtown. The Hilltop stayed intact.

I was born in that area near the Island section and was told years ago that the city has more pressing problems elsewhere and can't address the nuisance complaints like littering, vandalism, and petty theft. Mr. Boggiano might be a cop, but he is a resident too. If more cops lived in the city it would be a better place. How can a law enforcement officer be truly vested in a city when he or she lives off of Exit 9, 10, 11, or 12 on the Turnpike?

Hudson City will never be its own little enclave-municipality nestled in the middle of Jersey City. It's only hope is real political pressure and a councilman with the chestnuts that Mr. Fulop has. Little by little, the Hilltop has changed as older resident retire and move. I've noticed new construction and renovations of old brownstones and in time, there were be new residents on the Hilltop fighting the same battle that rages against City Hall and the JCPD in the Heights, Downtown, Marion, Bergen, Greenville, and Lafayette: End the corruption and do your job.

If someone really wants to help, adopt one of their animals. They have a lot of cats too. I notice that a lot of attention is being paid to the pooches. I just went to craigslist and searched for their animals and found some real cuties including the one that Dr. Death killed: Martha.

Did you see the picture on page 5 in the JJ? That was the "vicious" dog ordered put down? Incredible. The dog had a 250 dollar deposit on it, and they killed it instead of letting it live out its life with a family.

How many other animals were needlessly put down by this shelter? It's only because Martha was adopted by an apparently "proactive" family that this story made it into the media.

A bit quixotic on Mr. DeFazio's part. He should have also elaborated on the "economic opportnities that offer people an alternative to gang activity" because gang related crime is a big problem in Jersey City with no easy remedy. Generally, teens involved in something constructive aren't enamored with the gang culture which is glorified in music and videos, but blaming pop culture won't solve anything.

Getting law enforcement more involved is a good first step, but then what? Kids get out of the youth house eventually if they broke the law, but their reading and math skills are so low that meaningful job training and employment are beyond their reach. It's a terrible cycle.

Volunteerism in their early teens, Boy and Girl Scouts, and something resembling NYC's Sunshine Fund might save a few. Any ideas?

I called and said that I really have no proof. Unless you drive around with a digital recorder on your dashboard going 24/7, it will be hard to prove. I had photos of the damage and pothole including a certified letter from a reputable mechanic attesting to the fact that my damage is consistent with pot-hole damage.

Sorry sir, we can't help you. But the pothole was fixed by the end of that day.
