Basement flooding even after new check valve installed...
#31

We got flooded in Sandy/Irene. Not a surprise and post clean up we had a new check valve installed on the main pipe out to the street. When we get really intense rain like last Friday we still get water coming up from the cut out in concrete basement floor where the check valve is.

I'm pretty confident the check valve is working, but I'm trying to figure out what the cause might be. It only happens when there is pressure on the JC sewer system. Could it be that there is a small hole or crack in the main pipe somewhere between check valve and street that leaks when there are big rains/storms?

Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience... TIA

I would love to know what the official process for tree removal. My understanding is the utility company only flat tops the trees to keep branches away from wires.

JC DPW - who knows. It is scary to think one boneheaded owner could negatively impact a whole block by asking for a mature tree to be completely taken down.

Please DTJC residents - take off your shoes before you set foot in your place. The streets are covered with watered down sewage from all the basements being pumped out. It is third world.

remember how they had the truck with loud speakers back in the day driving around to "spread the word" on things. I suggest bringing that back out of retirement...

just think of all the Bro cred he'll get telling his Boken buddies about how he got robbed while hammered in Jersey City. "Dude I was so wasted I couldn't even tell the cops where it happened man..."

Sadly this story will serve as a case study for the JC hooligans showing how to rob drunk targets late night in DTJC...

how are JC basements faring? Our sump pump kicked on just now so i suspect JC sewers got overloaded with the heavy rain this morning.

for the past 2 years cheapie tix have been $75. So they doubled the price this year for Neil Patrick and a couple Alicia Keys tunes.

I dunno...

It is fun, but they only sell their own booze at 100 a bottle so that plus new ticket price equals a pricey outing.

Anyone doing both renters and auto insurance thru one carrier and getting a decent deal? I have separate policies and am sure I can do better. Just curious if anyone is particularly happy with their carrier...

people fly thru that light daily. What drives me crazy as a pedestrian is that the crosswalk signals are not synchronized with the traffic lights so if you are walking north on Varick where it switches to Coles you have NO way of knowing if you can cross unless you got there before the light change and pushed the crosswalk button. It is disgraceful that JC can't synchronize crosswalks like every other first world city does...

How is anyone surprised by this? It's the story of America, the bigger you get the more influence you buy.

Ultimately anyone will be able to look up Dixon properties and see if they are paying their fair share post-reval. They should be on the higher end anywhere since they do above average renovations.

They may be able to kick the can on taxes, but I really don't see how they can dodge the Reval... If they do dodge it, then show up at City Hall with pitchforks...

the view in any direction from Maxwell Alley leaves a lot to be desired. They've been gutting the building for awhile now, it's gonna be pretty big 2500sf or so.

Parking is tough around there so I guess they figure people will walk over from the Path.

I'm wondering if the JC bar/restaurant boom is getting ahead of itself. Lotta places in the works. Time will tell...

not sure even Sean Spicer could positively spin the Port Authority's strategic planning for the PATH system.

Perhaps they could create some new positions a la Tokyo where you have the guys that physically push people into the train cars....

well done.

If the small time thieves start getting nervous about homeowners using security cams and such a lot of this QOL stuff will be lowered. Since there are no beat cops walking around, this falls on residents....

JC also needs to make an example out of this duo and prosecute...

Yeah I've got some old gear in need on handles. Gotta work thru some green black locust rounds before they petrify. Everything I've read says new steel tools are disposable at best. May try and DIY if there isn't an artist close by for this sort of thing.

Not sure if there are many preppers living in JC, but does anyone know where I can get a new handle installed on axe/sledgehammer?

I've called hardware stores and they all can sell the handles but no one can install. Guess it is kind of a dying art...

having spent a lot of time at LSC with kids I wouldn't bet on a big spillover impact into DTJC restaurants. LSC is an auto based destination. People drive in from the burbs and run their kids around for 3 hours and then pack it up and head home in their minivan or SUV. I think the odds of the average user making the extra drive to DTJC to eat are slim.

Go drive around after 11PM and get a feel. Better to do on warmer days as that's when the hooligans are out. See how comfortable you feel.

I'd also go walk the neighborhood and ask people what their living experience has been. See if there are any neighborhood groups. Better yet, ask a police officer what his take is on the area.

I had to do grand jury duty a few years back and we heard 10-20 cases a day. It didn't take long to get a sense of where most of the crime was taking place. You heard the same street names over and over.
