"+1" to Jeebus and the intelligent discussion since that point.
My grandfather served in WWII and was a firefighter up to, I think, the level of deputy chief when he retired. I can saw with goddamn certainty that he never got these levels of compensation. To critique public pay for public employee unions, whether rank-and-file and especially for supervisory folks, is one of the most important facets of our political system right now. It is an active and unresolved issue which hampers the proper function of many other areas of government. To see it turned into third-rail gamesmanship is petty, and from that stems the resentment and the microscopic examination of the pay and compensation. The free market cannot place a value on public sector pay, and obviously the public sector is too easy to manipulate with voting-bloc threats and inflammatory language. We know that such race-based special interests disable our political system. Here, we have a similar problem. Let's all keep trying to stay on the level!

I think you are spot-on about the discontentment, outrage, frustration, etc. which exists throughout this city. I have expressed my strong repulsion to the idea of race card/ racial divisions/ race-based support for Inepp on the NJ.com site so I will not repeat it again here. Well, I guess I can say that Inepp is flat-out wrong if he thinks only the Fulop/ 07302/ downtown/ yuppies and etc are disappointed with Inepp, schools, budgets, 35 of 40, Board of Education baloney, etc. I think you are confirming this more general outrage. If Inepp assumes he will get support merely based on race... such an insulting and cynical ploy is likely to backfire. Perhaps they will be more careful with their words than that. So, what is the next step? How widespread is the discontentment in the African-American community, the Hispanic community, the South Asian community, the Filipino community... etc? I wonder about that. Strangely, this is a better opportunity than a school board election to see political action. Technological solutions - Facebook groups, etc - might be the forum for organizing here for parents and kids.

Ah, screw it.
Just give him a raise to $300,000 a year for 10 years and we'll see if he can push it up to 39 of 40 failing schools. Then JC will have to pay $500,000 for someone to come in and clean up the mess. By then, this website will be defunct and we'll all be in the suburbs.
Kidding aside... I haven't heard much from Inepp's camp about how testing is not the measure of a school and we can blame No Child Left Behind for everything... But as someone mentioned above, this joker is trying to play on PERCEIVED racial divisions. I guess he thinks African-American rank-and-file citizens don't notice their schools are failing. They clearly do. They're probably just not as vocal or organized as folks in this ZIP.

Epps trying to shore up black support
http://www.nj.com/hudson/voices/index ... ng_to_shore_up_black.html
The Jersey City political battle maps show there are trenches being dug in the black community.
The issue is Superintendent of Schools Charles T. Epps, who is seeking to extend his contract. The board voted 6-2-1 this week to do just that but some are not so willing. Epps? four-year "gazillion dollars" contract doesn?t expire until 2011.
Freshman school Trustee Sterling Waterman, aligned with Downtown city Councilman Steven Fulop, has argued that board members have had little time to review any contract proposal for Epps, and there has been talk of doing one of those infamous "nationwide" searches to find a better superintendent.
This has caused a stir in the black community. They see this as an attempt to push out a qualified black administrator. Some black elected officials have been in contact with each other should they be needed on the Epps front line.
...etc.

Sorry, y'all but I'm leaning to Ian's side on this one.
The reevaluation will disrupt some people who in the meantime are "underpaying" in terms of their property. We are all overpaying in terms of the value/ enjoyment/ services for our rental and owned properties, as there are many quality of life concerns which chip-chop-chip away at us. But, I think while Ian's point addresses the need for city services to improve the area... and THUS it's desirability/ property values/ resale values... some problems of infrastructure and governance are too complicatedly expensive to understand in terms of tax dollars. That is: there's SO MUCH duplicative, venal, selfish behavior in this city... often by non-residents... that it's difficult to see how to take them off the gravy train they're riding. In the meantime... cleaning up the area, etc. as he addressed, is already part of the existing budget and doesn't require lawsuits, lobbying, changes to pay-to-play, fights with the union, etc. For instance, enforcing the new state law about crosswalks and running red lights... that could raise A BUNCH monthly... and as T-Bird noted it could mostly be applied to out-of-towners. But... I think we should continue to look into this more. Xerxes and CoryBraiterman.. as much as I disagree with you two about the adaptive reuse for the downtown Embankment , you often have a lot of fiscally prudent insights for city governance. What do you think?

Hamilton Park has its first wedding since $3.2 million makeover

By BRENDAN TORRES
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
The newly renovated Hamilton Park in Jersey City has hosted its first wedding.
Last Saturday, Andrea Petzko, 26, and Daniel Vassilev, 29, gathered with 35 family members at the park at Jersey Avenue and Eighth Street to tie the knot - the first nuptials exchanged since the park received its $3.2 million facelift.
"I heard the park was a dump before the renovations," said Petzko, a resident with her new husband of the Ninth Street Hamilton Park Condominiums.
"But I chose the park because of how beautiful and close it is. The scenery was great, the tennis courts, the fountains. Oh, and the children everywhere."
The Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association pushed hard for the reconstruction of the park. The new park includes a toddler area, tennis and basketball courts, and a spray park for hot summer days.
"The park renovations were awesome" said Elena Mukaida, recording secretary for the association and a neighbor of the newlyweds. "It has brought out a spirit of taking ownership of the park and a volunteer group of about 50 neighbors pick up trash daily."
The newlyweds have lived in the city since Thanksgiving. Petzko lived in Cranbury before she met her future husband, an Astoria, Queens resident. The two met on the dating website match.com.
"Isn't that crazy? He was perfect!" Petzko exclaimed. She is an English teacher and the groom is a day trader.
The bride and groom exchanged sweets with one another.
"Mother made cookies to signify a sweet life together," Petzko explained.
The group then took a bus to the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan for a reception.

Yes, there are ample links from both sites, including the NJ.com site. One link is mid-page and one is at the end of the story.
The NJ.com does have a drop-down menu by county, and the details of *each school* can be viewed from there. The page loads a bit sloppily when opening that submenu (gray box) but it does the job. There's also this: http://www.nj.com/news/bythenumbers/ These sites all give us a sense of the problem, but nothing quite tells the story of the depth of institutional failure and incompetence.

Some of the "passes" include those with "early warning" status. For instance, Brensinger #17 and Kennedy #9. That might be the basis for the difference in accounting.
Schools here: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010 ... appSession=67770676794596 Per this state website ( http://www.nj.gov/education/title1/ac ... ility/ayp/0910/info.shtml ): "A school that does not make AYP for one year is placed into 'early warning' status." That site explains a lot more about it as well.

At first I was going to joke that they should re-purpose he site for re-use as a prison or a merged FBI/ CIA/ NSA super cyber security center... because why pump loads of $ into it without a real expectation of financial returns from property and sales tax.
And that's when I realized it should be re-purposed as Silicon Meadows. Tech sector jobs... highly-paid workers with great human capital... Etc. Not manufacturing. Not traffic-heavy shipping/ import/ export/ consumption mall. Basically, we need an East Coast Google-Amazon-Verizon-eBay-whatever super-center. They love the playground atmosphere of their office parks. My FBI-CIA-NSA idea is similar, but much less profitable for sales and property taxes, though would be great for creating jobs and payroll taxes. I'm going to propose this idea to the Governor so he can take all the credit.

The original Xanadu (Shangdu) was destroyed by looters, arsonists, and rivals.
Citizen Kane's Xanadu became too massive for upkeep, and his assets were liquidated or disposed of after his death... most notably by fire. Here, the only prospects are two: a Hoboken-style insurance scam arson, or pushing forward irrationally and with abandon in anticipation of the first Sunday of February 2014: Das ?berSch?ssel... where the overflow fans will fill IZOD concerts and big-screens and be happy at the mall/ hotel/ conference space/ blizzard/ condo/ state fair/ shitstorm/ theme park/ hot-dog-eating-contest/ floodplain which is the gloomy future of our society. Everybody loves a hot dog eating contest, so let's do that.

Jersey City animal shelter board fires director
by Ken Thorbourne/The Jersey Journal
http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... y_animal_shelter_boa.html
The interim board of the Liberty Humane Society animal shelter in Jersey City fired its director tonight.
The three-member interim board of the Jersey City Liberty Humane Society fired the animal shelter's director tonight.
This action comes a nearly a week after the shelter's former five-member board resigned, citing differences with the director, Joanna Hopkinson.
"We feel the organization needs a fresh start," Diana Jeffrey, one of three past presidents of the shelter to comprise the interim board, said about the firing.
"We just feel the process needs to start again."
When they quit en masse last week, the former board members accused Hopkinson of leading the shelter into financial insolvency by instituting a misguided "no kill" policy.
Asked if the immediate termination of the Hopkinson meant the interim board agreed that Hopkinson's pursuit of a "no-kill" shelter was wrongheaded, Jeffrey said it did not.
But she added, "We know that the 'no-kill' policy has resulted in expenses exceeding our income and has resulted in the shelter being overcrowded."
Hopkinson, who was hired to be the shelter's director in November, could not be reached to comment tonight.
Jeffrey spoke shortly after the interim board met at City Hall and said a leading reason the board fired Hopkinson was to dispel the notion that the shelter is too beholden to its largest donor, John Neu.
She said Hopkinson's salary, which was "in the 70s," was being paid from a restricted grant from Neu that could only be used to pay Hopkinson.
Neu could not be immediately reached to comment.
Jeffrey said two firms are working voluntarily to figure out the shelter's finances and once that work is completed in a couple of days, all

I'm not saying that's the best idea for $ or PD/ enforcement reasons. I'm just saying the PA is a profit engine as it is, so the idea of monetizing their holdings isn't so far-fetched.

Ian, you have me picturing the video game Frogger. Even the best gamers get smooshed in Frogger, but they can clean up and play again.
Yesterday, a man from Queens was struck and killed by a drunk hit-and-run driver who was more concerned about getting off Scot-free (take that!) than being held accountable. That is an egregious example of how selfishness can be put before humanitarian feelings. But just that kind of thinking... short-term self-serving behavior... typifies the decision-making of most drivers out there. It's a warzone: tanks vs. infantry.

Obviously the concept of "wasting money" is something park-lovers refuse to accept. They consider it "investing money" etc.
From a normal park, the city foregoes property taxes/ ratables. Those parks require maintenance of the normal type. The Embankment would require a special, separate kind of maintenance if it were to become a park. Being a special park, it could conceivably generate donations, plaque-based sponsorship of the stone blocks, licensing revenue, concert/ wedding reception fees (at Holy Rosary and St. Michael's). Those would probably not pay for the union steelworker/ bridgebuilder jobs, let alone the iron itself. For me, the ideal use is to put a light rail on Sixth Street (ideally an old-style historic trolley) and make the park walkable akin to the High Line. Why bring the light rail up hill and make the whole neighborhood hear it, only to bring it down again six blocks later? Just put the damn thing on Sixth and make sure there's a way-station for laying up when the other train passes by. At the same time, make the park a walkable, connected one. Practical/ fiscal feasibility and political machinations will stand in the way of all that for awhile.
