Wow. A bad attitude combined with a conflicting positions like being against a "police state" yet wanting to force a private developer to build a bridge over a public road, rather than walk down to the light and crosswalk at 8th. Not that a stop light at 9th isn't a good idea, but the whining for footbridges over everything from Marin to the Morris Canal to the Hudson itself is tedious. Maybe you need to move to the burbs if a city street is that terrifying to you.("sidewalks are too close to traffic"!!!)

Marin is in no way a "city street," being bounded as it is by a SHOPPING MALL one one side and an enormous PARKING LOT on the other. SHOPPING MALLS and PARKING LOTS are not what I'd call representative of modern urban living. What it IS is an example of terrible urban planning and, as you yourself have pointed out, Mr. Consistency, a developer running roughshod over the people of Hamilton Park. And demanding that developers respect and provide for the safety of both their residents and the neighborhoods is not an example of police-state tactics. It's called "the social contract." Putting cameras everywhere, on the other hand, is the literal implementation of the Big Brother nightmare. Way to miss the difference.

High-speed traffic combined with a confusing traffic pattern intersecting the major route by which thousands of Jersey City residents must cross to reach public transportation seems like a legitimate concern to me, not a case of whining. Further, you'd only have to build one side of the foot-bridge - the other could join to the second level of the parking deck, thus eliminating the need for two elevators as well.

BTW, your beloved Manhattan, which would qualify as a city, has traffic lights at the corner of every street - and has been doing incredible things to make it more walkable.

Most Ped bridges are across uncontrolled highways and such, like the Grand Central Pwy. The West St Bridge was an exception and a boondoggle, and was only done because the road is so wide. There's no reason for a bridge over a 4 lane local road with lights on it. What we need is traffic enforcement. I'm a big fan of the traffic cams that don't try to identify the driver, just issue a fine like a parking ticket. It serves as a deterrent without violation of privacy.

You also seem to have missed the obvious fact that when they built the mall they tried their damnedest to keep out the "barbarians" across Marin! The Garage is a Chinese Wall. The HPNA had to threaten to sue to get the Marin doors put in.

1. Don't condescend to your superiors.

2. I haven't missed anything. I said they "should" have built it. That remains true.

3. There's also no reason for there to be cops and crossing guards simultaneously directing traffic. A traffic light would be just fine there, as I've pointed out before.

4. While you are babbling on about Manhattan, I'll point out the pedestrian bridge built over Kennedy Blvd. by St Peters. I'm sure that this was at the expense of the college. I suggest that Le Frak or whomever owns the mall now be forced to build a bridge if they want to build any more buildings.

Crossing Marin is deadly. It's a disgusting road to walk on, and the sidewalks are too close to traffic often traveling in far in excess of the speed limit. It's a failure of city planning and a testament to the need for better urban design. Not the continuation of dystopian police-state tactics like traffic cams.

Duh.

Sez who? Who are you to pronounce if it's a good candidate or not?

Seems to me that thousands of people cross Marin at their peril daily. A pedestrian bridge should have been stipulation of building the mall in the first place.

Why do they have a cop AND a crossing guard in the mornings to help kiddies cross Marin?

How could it NOT be more economical to simply install a traffic light? Or build a foot bridge!!!

Hey goofball, you think this stabbing is a CREDIT to the JCPD? And the fact that the police haven't ended the tyranny of "the thugs that have dogged that block for years" (your words, not mine) is part of my ideological disconnect?

Street Crimes is another one. Some really good cops are getting laid off. Other's are getting pulled into patrol. Again some very good cops gone. What do you think is going to happen in the innermost hood, where the majority of you have only read about in the Jersey, but really have no clue what goes on there? Its going to explode. The gangs and dealers are constantly shooting each other now. Get rid of them squads and its going to be a great turf war. And it wont stay contained.
I've said it before, the thugs out in Newark make our toughest gang bangers punks. Anybody around when that nitwit MoMo Moriarity launched his big sweep? National Guard Helicopter, TV crews, the works. The streets were deserted in the hood. Apparently the rumor was that a stick up crew from Newark was in the city and all of our tough little hood rats ran home to mommy. Like the early 90's there are going to be alot of pursuits to Newark. I've been on a few death rides over the bridges. When traveling in the area of Communipaw and the Highway especially use caution. I've seen them go through both red lights at 100 mph to get away. I'll bet there are absolute savages licking their chops right now knowing it's gonna be easy pickings.
If you live in Jersey City, get on the phone or up to the Astor Bar and tell him to cut all of the fat from the top first.Quote:

Another act of violence tonight on Wayne street. Early reports consisted of a shooting: looks like it might have been a stabbing to the head and brandishing of a gun. Be careful in that area tonight...and always.

Wait... Isn't this incident actually indicative of the failure of the police force to effectively stave off crime anyways? And based on the general invisibility of the police downtown (the only place I see constant police activity, bless their brave little blue hearts, is on THE WATERFRONT, typically busting balls for parking to enjoy the view or grab a latte at Starbucks) I can't imagine that this horde of savage Jersey Journal reading ruffians are sitting back salivating, just biding their time for the next 90 DAYS or whatever until they launch their attack.

You really are a fear-mongering racist creep, and should be stripped from the force.

Jackey my man, I realize this may be hard for you to understand, but you're waging an information war for the hearts and minds of a cynical and mistrustful population who more often than not are inclined to think of the police as dunderheaded bullies.

Thusly, I simply made the suggestion that you might be able to help defeat the stereotype of "cop as monotonous dunderheaded automaton" if you'd employ some basic communication tools like, I dunno, paragraphs and punctation.

But thanks for my new tag-line.

The number of JCPD layoffs now stands at 82 police officers losing their jobs and 12 supervisors being demoted. A few months ago our illustrious mayor stood in front of the press and announced a record setting decrease in crime, and now he and Business ?As Usual? Administrator Kelly, he of the combined $307,000 annual salary from his FOUR jobs, decide to reward the police departments efforts by cutting back an already understaffed and under-supervised department even further. A few interesting points that they neglected to mention: Since January 1, 2008 to November 1, 2010 the JCPD has seen the loss of: 1 Deputy Chief, 5 Inspectors, 13 Captains, 17 Lieutenants, 22 Sergeants, 19 Detectives and 39 Police Officers. Just looking at BASE salary ALONE, this amounts to over $7 million dollars not paid out in 2010 alone. Current staffing levels in the supervisory ranks now stand at: 1 Deputy Chief, 4 Inspectors (Soon to be demoted to Captains), 21 Lieutenants (An all-time low) and 98 Sergeants. Not one of those retired supervisors has been replaced. The department hired 30 Police Officers in 2008 and 27 Police Officers in 2009. These officers, along with an additional 25 are all slated for lay-off within the next few months. This will bring the number of Police Officers to roughly 520. With the low numbers of Police Officers and Supervisors the dangerous conditions these officers will face on the streets will only increase beyond what they are now. No matter what rhetoric City Hall spews out about savings, the demotions will save approximately $175K and the lay-off of 82 police officers will in no way come close to the savings they are touting. The real losers here are the citizens of Jersey City, who will see decreased response times and lesser services for their tax dollars, not due to lack of concern from the men and women of the JCPD, but simply because they cannot be in three places at once, it?s just simple math.

Dear members of the Jersey City Police Department...

Carpet-tea-bagger-

They range in scope from loud music and barking dogs to multiple shootings. When they cut the patrol force by roughly a quarter, alot of calls aren't going to get answered. Big deal you say, think about that hot July night and the Salsa party next door is just reaching it's climax at 4 in the morning with four foot high speakers in the backyard. Or when you're upstairs neighbor's kids are skateboarding across the hardwood floor and you have to get up in the morning for work.

^^^

That's the best you can do? Drum up fears of raucous Salsa dancing and skateboarding toddlers?

That's what we need to employ 625 heroes for?

And you're one of the smart ones, right?

Next time you see a patrol cop ask him what exactly does the directors office do. I'm serious. I've been around a long time and have no clue at all. No one does. Once a month his office puts out a bullshit newsletter usually containing information about the JCPD from the 1930's that means nothing. Know why the vast majority of cops move out? Because we see what really goes on not just what the Jersey Journal reports. They lay these cops off and the city will get more dangerous. Most of the people who live downtown weren't here in the early 90"s when open air drug markets and rampant street violence were the norm. Think Queen Viola is gonna sit back and let her precious hood go back to that? No she's gonna demand and get more cops to keep the worst areas of the city from blowing up. Guess where their gonna pull them cops from? Thats right the East. Alot of people on this board think that every cop is good for nothing and we should make thirty thousand a year. When that district is running on skeleton crews and the animals from the hill realize its easy pickings where the people with the good stuff live you will want the cops back. Demand that city hall looks for cuts everywhere else before cutting cops or you will see what the good old days were like. This job is about to get real exciting again. Good for me bad for you.
