i do not know how large part of the city budget comes from the downtown and how much of downtown's contribution to the overall city budget is reinvested in this very part of jersey city, but i would strongly argue, based on the vastly disproportionate valuation of real estate across the wards, that after seceding, property taxes would plummet for the inhabitants of the tribeca west*.

further, i would not be surprised if public services - ranging from cops to schools - would also show a marked improvement.

so, if anyone is interested in organizing a grass-roots movement to secede from jersey city and to form tribeca west* from downtown jersey city, let us unite!

i think the nickname "moby" is totally inaccurate, by the way. bald-by-choice with glasses... that's the extent of the overlap. it's so inaccurate it's distracting!

moby:

nationality - american

resides - new york/ london/ copenhagen/ japan... some of these? not flipping burgers in dumpy a** jersey city

height - 5'6" ??

weight - 135 ??

skills and interests - music, politics, charity, human rights,
animal rights, etc.

discipline - musicality

politics - left libertarian? (anarcho-vegan?)

this footage is chilling. i am not a disturbed person. i am happy and well-balanced.

i broke down the timeframe to demonstrate that the traffic signal was red and the "ampelmann" was in the pedestrian's favor, lest there be any doubt. i did not enjoy doing this task.

the light was clearly red at the time of the accident. we cannot see it, but we can see the 6th street light being green. we cannot see the amber.

the time between when the pedestrian enters the camera view and is struck is under two seconds

timeline:

* the loud banging sound of the crash could be confused with the truck's normal operations
* As was mentioned, "I thought it was a garbage truck hitting something behind us on York and didn't think to check out my front window." That, my friend, is your time-stamped earwitness.

Question: the other scraps of metal on the ground... what color/ make of car were they? If they're green, or don't exist, it's because it's the recycling truck.

Home away from home

When Corzine nominated Stuart Rabner to the state Supreme Court, his nomination was blocked by two Essex Cty electeds: Ron Rice and Nia Gill. The objection was made out of the "senatorial courtesy" which they feel is owed to them when the nomination is either from or affecting their county. And here... we see the same petty, short-sighted, venal (not literally), and totally predictable behavior: that's our elected. From a Senate Democrats website: "The Courier Times describes her best by stating, "For Glenn was blessed to have met and married a woman whose class, sophistication and determination in her own right would continue the great deeds that she and her husband once planned.' " Yes, after several uneventful years in a position in which she has name recognition and minimal qualifications, Ms. Cunningham seeks to aggregate her power, drive her personal agenda, vendetta her city/ county/ state opponents within the party. She must have taken the advice from Ron Rice and Nia Gill. After many, many years in a protected district (no opposition candidate), Ron Rice is shameless and open about misconstrue a personal agenda as an agenda of affirmative action. Ms. Cunningham does not have the freedoms that Rice has. Half of her district: Bayonne. (Cue dramatic music). So, come out all you dyed-in-the-wool Cunningham supporters and Healy apparatchiks... you brainwashed kneejerkers... you love the (first term?) Senator who ran on the memory of her husband... the most perverse nepotism I've ever heard of, because the votes either don't know it's a different candidate, or don't care. Come out: support your machine and your party hacks. You love the combine, because you're do-ing the chew-ing.

Correct, the deployed scanner was a passive millimeter wave technology. However, the link provided by the OP states the following: The images generated through millimeter wave are lower-resolution than that of x-ray backscatter, and as a result, privacy may be less of a concern for the traveling public. TSA anticipates that both "passive" and "active" millimeter wave technology will be deployed at pilot sites in the near future. "Active" millimeter wave technology is different. I couldn't determine exactly how, but it seems like it's a booth you stand in. It might present a different picture than the passive method. I'm not sure because the interweb seemed unsure. Which brings us to another point that was circulating: Quote:

Re: Parked car totaled in hit and run
Home away from home
Home away from home

First, there is a local body shop. It's on Bright/ Barrow. After that, what's the second most nearby one? Maybe on Brunswick/ Merseles/ Newark Ave?

Damn, I have to take a deep breath. I'm pissed with humanity right now over this hit-and-run, but on the other hand, I'm relieved that so many thoughtful people have spoken up. Many of these folks are locals to VVP and Bright Street in particular.

In fact, to cut through Bright Street en route to Monmouth Street... I feel only a local would do that. If you're driving on Grand you could continue to Monmouth, so why turn on Jersey and then left onto Bright? To get on Bright Street from the dead end part is a pain as well because of the sharp turn by the framing store. If driving on Jersey or Varick towards Grand, why turn onto Bright? But, if you're on Varick... you have to go onto Bright.

All the permutations... the options... the absence of bars in this particular neighborhood...

I believe it was someone local. Drunk drivers are sloppy drivers, but their decisions/ directions/ inclinations about choosing the route may be perfectly fine. I don't know.

Whatever the class and economic implications of the suggestions in earlier posts (stolen car... those scumbags... dregs of society....), we have no way of knowing what happened. But, this neighborhood is only so big. Somebody saw or heard something. Some community investigation and handbills fliers could get the process moving. Or, a private detective.

Just think of it: with very little effort you got support from many people here. (Which took them very little effort). For a car as beautiful and valuable as yours... there are other cameras and witnesses out there. Somewhere. However, I see the frustation with pursing those options when there are no results.

Re: please help= animal emergency

If he can't do the job, then let's get someone who can. If the entity is so disabled that the workers are disposing of house cats in the park, heads have to roll. A commission looks like "action" to the activists on this issue, so it may pacify them for a spell. A politician will make political hay of the success. I'm fine with both.

But if the people running the operation are too old-fashioned, disorganized, understaffed, or uncreative to git-er-dun... then a leadership change is necessary. Sometimes it isn't enough that you know he's a good guy and that he works hard.

Messrs. Frank and Melendez may be great neighbors and friends. That's fine. But if city or county politicocs are unwilling to disturb, fire, or transfer experienced workers on their "faith in the guy" principles alone, then that is the wrong decision.

These gentlemen, or whomever is involved, could be transferred laterally to other departments where their skills are needed. That would be a perfectly acceptable solution.

Re: Old park on 1st

Agreed on all counts. I used to live next to the park in the exiting building, directly across from Indio's. That place is crud.

Actually, a friend designed a dual park for her class in landscape architecture. She stretched the park to include the lot for the leaning building, the existing park, the lot for my old building, and the parking lot. Then, she connected it across a brick-paved crosswalk to the lot for Indio's and built steps up the the embankment overlooking Columbus.

The blueprints looked amazing. And, Indio's was RIP.

Eminent domain for public use, though, would require just compensation to the parties whose land was seized.

I spoke with the security manager at the Pathmark and explained what was going on, and he seemed very sympathetic and interested in helping and is going to take a look at his tapes between 1:00-1:25 to look for any car driving through with extensive damage to the passenger front side (which is the way their cameras face)

I'm pretty disappointed that the police seemingly care so little about it. I understand that there are more important issues than someone's car being hit, but the fact remains that whoever did this is still running around and could have very easily killed someone with that sort of behavior. The camera from the school would have a decent chance of catching the entire accident on tape, yet they have no interest in helping out with this.

Get your lawyer or your insurance company's lawyer to (1) compel them, or (2) ensure the tapes are not erased.

It's not a big deal. That's my point. His talk was meaningless. He is in no position to help kids with anything.

A fifteen minute chit-chat about "staying in school or whatever" will have no impact compared to their consumption of his music, lyrics, media presence, image, etc., or that of their family and neighborhood. If he rapped about staying in school, etc., then that would help. Is that the Fat Joe message?

This is not about hip hop. If the school brought in Michelle Rodriquez, I would say the same thing. She dropped out of Jersey City schools (GED maybe?) and carried her negativity with her from Girl Fight to Fast/ Furious to SWAT, etc. She has also been sentenced to nearly a year in jail for DUIs, etc. That is an example of what not to do; she is not a equipped to tell kids what to do right/ different, except to say "don't do what I did."

I know Hudson County has better examples for kids.

i see from the pics that you're midblock on bright, by the set-back house. across the street is the school, so this is the westbound direction on bright.

that sounds like a drunk driver on a sideswipe en route to monmouth street or the pathmark, and from there, who knows?

or i guess they could have veered from their lane going east on bright, which would send them towards van vorst and a more densely populated area

You should move. You obviously detest towns that were once industrial. You want to tear down the Embankment to turn it into housing, because you consider it blight. But you want to tear down the Powerhouse to turn it into a park, because you consider it blight. From this thread ( http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... id=194461#forumpost194461 ), I repeat: You look at a building, and, just by looking at it, you know it's inherent value in that role at that time, and forever into the future for all possible roles and all possible times. ... You did not answer whether you think these properties can be "saved" for a use you consider a productive, beneficial use, so we can only speculate as to what a good purpose is for you, the Emperor of Persia and Preservation. A good preservationist is one preserves what His Highness wants preserved because it serves "a real purpose." Apparently, preservation cannot be for it's own sake. Only for a modern, purposive sake. If something loses it's purpose, and is in your view unsightly or geographically divisive, it should be torn down before any non-purposive use, as only you deem them to be, can be considered for the site. For you, it seems there is no system, purpose, or focused endeavor. As do others, you simply envision a tornado of destruction which de-blights and pacifies. I tend not to care much about what other people think, but the narrow simplicity of your viewpoint, as I understand it, is frustrating. But, more importantly: are you employed by the Mayor, the Council, the County, JC Bus. Dev., the HDCO, etc? If not, then I know your view will never prevail, though a marginally less frustrating view may.

As far as property values go if you compare the homes in downtwon to the homes on the other end of the city technically the homes on the other end of the city are much nicer and much much bigger, therefore you would get more for your money and bring up property values.

You are uninformed, or biased.

Bringing up property values is not the goal of urban redevelopement, and it is not always a blessing. Also, location, and not the size/ age of the structure, are the important determinants of it's extrinsic, monetary value.

As others have noted, Newark Avenue's existing structures have instrinsic, historic value through their quaintness and stability. Some improvements are merited, and are coming, but those occur through market forces... not your tornado of improvement.

Moreover, there is more foot traffic on Newark Ave, so "bang for the buck," as measured by use, clearly argues for improving high traffic areas in a commercial corridor... not fixing sidewalks on Cornelison, Kensington, or Zabriskie.
