Another security tool for doors to prevent home invasions or to prevent a burglar sneaking in when you're at home or asleep.

JC - The Nicest Place to Live - Ever

Home away from home

at least according to bluesman John Hammond in today's NYT.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/05/nyr ... dnj.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

JERSEY CITY

In the Region
THIS city may or may not be the hotbed of hipsterism it has been made out to be lately, but it has at least one big point in its favor: John Hammond Jr. lives here.

Mr. Hammond, a blues legend with a voice like Robert Johnson?s and a demeanor that belies his tear-it-up might before an audience, has a history of being on hand during significant cultural moments.

As a Greenwich Village resident in the 1960s, he got Jimi Hendrix the local gig that would kick-start his career. Later Mr. Hammond played a weeklong residency at the Gaslight, another local spot, with Eric Clapton and Mr. Hendrix.

By 1965 he had helped introduce Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm of the Band to the world through his fourth album, ?So Many Roads? (Vanguard), after luring them to New York as session players. And though his father, the celebrated music-business executive John Hammond, gets credit for signing Bob Dylan to Columbia Records in 1961, it was the younger Mr. Hammond whom Mr. Dylan turned to early on for the low-down on musicians.

?Bob always looked to me for guitarists,? Mr. Hammond recalled recently in his bright, narrow, LP-lined apartment in Jersey City. On Mr. Dylan?s 1965 and 1966 ?electric? tours, he said, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Hudson and Mr. Helm were in Mr. Dylan?s traveling band; Mr. Hammond had introduced them.

Now 64, he spends about 250 days a year on the road playing the blues, and says performing is his only reprieve from a stutter he?s had since childhood. Touring a countrywide circuit of blues festivals this summer, he will perform closer to home next month, with shows at the Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore, N.Y., on Sept. 12 and the Havana nightclub in New Hope, Pa., on Sept. 13.

Mr. Hammond released his 31st album, ?Push Comes to Shove? (Back Porch Records), in January. That it is among the best in his career, according to critics and Mr. Hammond himself, may have something to do with the life he has carved out here not far from the Holland Tunnel entrance.

?This is the nicest place I?ve ever lived,? said Mr. Hammond, from a leather couch. He credits his wife, Marla, executive producer of the new album, for making it so. When he met her 16 years ago, while living in New York, ?I had been through a hideous divorce,? he said. ?I lost everything.? Marla helped him get back on his feet financially, he said.

The Hammonds were married in 1993, and they bought their apartment in 1998, when a nearby charter school was once an abandoned brewery and the Grammy Award on their living room shelf (from 1984, for Best Traditional Blues Recording for Mr. Hammond?s album ?Blues Explosion?) would have been an unlikely find in the neighborhood.

?Jersey City is also the most integrated city I?ve ever lived in,? he said. ?There?s a certain lightness that?s wonderful, and it?s so ready for culture. Right now it?s like New York ought to have been, or was once, or something.?

Life here has afforded him the comfort level to take risks. If there is a scuff on Mr. Hammond?s mostly spotless reputation, it is over his reliance on the material of his heroes and mentors; he regularly interprets the songs of Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon and Lightnin? Hopkins.

In 2003, though, more than 40 years into his career, he turned an artistic corner. ?Somehow, I had the perspective on things to start writing,? he said.

Songs have come slowly. For the 2003 album ?Ready for Love? (Back Porch Records), he wrote one song; for ?In Your Arms Again? in 2005 (Back Porch Records), three. On ?Push Comes to Shove,? he has five writing credits.

With them, a newfound sense of adventurousness has reared up: to produce the new CD, he enlisted the artist G. Love, a longtime fan.

?Garrett was really on the ball,? said Mr. Hammond, who calls G. Love by his given name, Garrett Dutton. ?Everybody there to play came to play. There was elements of what I did in the ?60s and ?70s, and elements of the album I did with Tom Waits,? he said, referring to ?Wicked Grin? (Virgin Records, 2001), an acclaimed collection of covers of Mr. Waits?s songs produced by Mr. Waits.

Notable about the recording was the studio in which it took shape. ?It was this hole in the wall in West Orange our engineer knew of,? Mr. Hammond said.

Then again, he said, ?I?m used to raunchy joints.?

Thanks
Any help would be appreciated!

What you have in the pic is called a mortise lock. They are more complicated and more expensive than cylinder locks. If it's not broken and your main concern is security, I would just leave it alone and add another cylinder deadbolt above it. You can probably get the new lock keyed to the old lock (same key) if you buy it from a locksmith. As someone mentioned, the weak point in door locks is always the jamb. Typical JC burgler does not have the brains to pick a lock, they will muscle the door open. Look into replacing the strike plates with larger heavier steel plates with several long heavy screws that extend deep into the stud behind the jamb. Oh, if you live in a new construction condo ( are you listening burglers?) with sheetrock walls. Did you know you can cut a hole in the sheetrock next to the lock with a drywall saw and reach in to unlock the door? So if you're really into security you might consider openning up the wall next to the door jamb and filling the stud bays with 3/4" plywood in the area around the lock.

Alternatively take off the face plate (escutcheon) and go to a hardware store to replace it with another.

What is actually wrong with the door / door hardware?
You can just replace the lock barrel if that's the problem - contact a locksmith (mobile) and get them to give you a replace and install price.

Escutcheon or face plate: Your goal is to match where the holes are for the handle and lock is.

Depending on the age of the building / home, I'd look at antique stores and building material recycle centers - some art-deco escutheon plates can cost a fortune, but be an eye-catching talking point - same goes for cool looking antiques door knockers.

PS - This could be a great week-end project to find and install for the home handyman / woman.

Without question their parents are accountable in a primary way and have let these kids down on the teachings of respect and being constructive law abiding individuals, but on a secondary level the schools, the government and even the community have let these kids down by ignoring this growing problem of children that assualt and commit crime.
The cops can only scoop these ass-wipes up after the crime - its setting an example and teaching these ass-wipes that isn't happening.

this incident atleast started to lean towards my ideal turnout of an assault in Jersey City.

I was hoping more for:

"the two 14 year olds reached into his pocket to grab his cell phone, but, little did they know, they were about to get the beating of a lifetime. see, the victim was an 8th degree blackbelt, and immediately following their attempt to grab his phone, he simultaneously broke both their arms, and continued beating them till they lost consciousness. the other two accomplices tried running away, but the victim happened to be carrying his nunkachucks on him that night, and stunned both of them in the back of the head with a few swift blows. and wouldn't you know it.........he also had rope.....so he hung them by their feet from the nearest Oak tree and proceeded to have a practice session on their twitching, bloody bodies till exhaustion set in. during a later interview, the victim had stated,

"wow, what a great workout. nothing like practicing on the real thing."

I'm only guessing that you are on a budget, like most of us.
An easy solution is (without a close inspection of the door) to rotate to door around so the hinges are on the right and handle on the left - remove all the hardware and fill the holes. Then you can get any door hardware you want.
A good handyman should be able to do it or if you aren't on a budget replace the whole door and recycle the hinges or anything else that's in good order.

Well, you can kiss those BIG bonuses from Wall St. goodbye, the Party is *OVER*!!!

Why financials still look too risky ...

I don't want to pull any punches: This is the worst environment for banks, mortgage lenders, and the general U.S. financial industry that I've seen since 1998!...In the beginning, Wall Street tried to tell us it was just subprime lenders having problems. But that has been proven false. Indeed, lenders in the Alt-A arena ? where loans are made to borrowers that fall between subprime and prime ? are now getting killed.

Go ahead, try to get a liar-loan on that $900,000 Shore Club condo (that you over-bid at $1.1 million) in this environment, I double-dog dare you

Definitely look into getting impact-resistant laminated glass on any first floor window if you can afford it, or potentially a high-quality impact resistant plexiglass (just be careful that you get good plexiglass, as poor quality plexiglass can yellow or become cloudy over time). These will add far more value to your home than window bars, that's for sure :)

here, here....

have started to post a few times today, but kept getting interupted....

you said it all. Philanthropy is good, but does not make good government.

Though, I think - it is better to contribute out of pocket as he did, rather than as a few other councilmembers loudly proclaimed back in January - that they use their campaign funds (and Pay to Play money) to give dollars back the community. Maybe its different, maybe not....

It's good to see that you are very passionate about Fulop and once again $20,000 is a siht load of money to donate.

His money is going to worthy causes and there is no question about that, but I judge a person on how they can manage JC better, create more jobs, improve our infrastructure, policing and general quality of life, their ability to team lead, negotiate, network and control all facets of city hall - their personal integrity and even their public speaking skills are important.
Even though Fulop might appear to be a philanthropist, it really doesn't rank high in my book. I'd love my next Mayor to be thrifty when it comes to money and demand ever cent spent to be cost-effective.

The most important thing for me and a + for Fulop is that he never walks away from his PAY to PLAY policy / idea.

Re: Condo security

I'm no Fat-Ass but I'd say OF COURSE you can and SHOULD replace it with a better lock. And if you have the mullah you should also ensure that the door itself AND doorframe are made of STEEL, not wood because the best lock can be easily crow-barred from a wood-frame door.

The windows should be high-impact resistant plexiglass especially at all streetlevel windows. I recently was walking thru the West Village and saw the firemen trying to break into a window that had such glass. THEY COULDN'T SMASH IN EVEN WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER. They finally gained entry by prying out the window frame. Took 'em 20 minutes (it wasn't a fire, just that the alarm went off). This particular building however had this type of glass on EVERY one of the 6 story structures windows because it stores valuables.

You probably won't need to do ALL your own windows, just the most dangerous ones.

I prefer lockable exterior powder coated aluminum window shutters (no painting) - they also help keep your cooling and heating costs down.
But if its just security then this will work and add value to your home like the shutters.

The door hardware could be a different story - I'd check Lowe's and Home Depo or simply email your photo to door hardware companies in the yellow pages - The only thing I would add with your photo is the dimensions.

Better still, unscrew the door handle plate and there should be a manufacturers name and serial number / name on it.
Depending on the age of the hardware, you might find that it is not manufactured anymore.

Good hunting.

I recently moved out of his district, and i cannot BEGIN to tell you how much I miss him.
I have never even seen or heard one peep from my councilmember. It's the one thing i really miss from downtown, that and Pam from Downtown Watch:)
And the one big complaint when he was running was, "he's ambitious."
well "hell ya" to that. it means he will get stuff done. as much as he possibly can without the other councilmembers and corp counsel getting in the way. i learned a great deal by working for a rather effective councilmember in washington dc, and i've found that you can tell a good councilmember by these two things:
1) the legislation that they produce/support
2) constituent services
on both counts he is really great.
And if you were at the council meeting where they voted on the pay to play leg, you also have to admit he is by far the most eloquent councilmember.
