I'm guessing the dude was drunk/high/both, given that he was initially leaning on another passenger while sleeping and managed to shoot himself in the leg. Very sad that there were kids possibly in his care at the time. 5:10 AM means they were probably out in the city till bars/clubs closed at 4 AM.

I take the PATH to Newark every day. There are lots of "interesting" characters. The #1 rule I have is Do Not Engage the Crazy. Anyone acting erratic or even just slightly off - do not make eye contact, do not talk to them. "Off" is anything from passed out to walking around acting jittery/cagey, to talking to themselves or punching the walls of the train. If they are really concerning, at the next stop get off and change cars. When you get to your stop, use the passenger assistance phone to call and report the person's behavior.

Taking these precautions has meant that my daily commute is nearly always hassle free.

What if the crazies want to engage in conversation with me? There are plenty of times when I am approached I try to ignore them but they end up getting frustrated and accuse me of shunning them out. They do not want to be ignored.

Step 1 is to not look approachable. I look really angry and unfriendly when I'm not smiling, and I just ratchet it up to 11 when I sense crazy around. Wearing headphones, not making eye contact, having closed body posture all helps.

If you are approached though there are a few options. Shoot them down quickly and then move away - be polite, make eye contact and smile while doing so, and then move somewhere else. The idea is to treat them pretty normally so they don't get mad because they feel snubbed. "Sorry I don't have any cash" works for beggars.

For crazy people who are just harassing you, I usually pull the "oh I'm getting a phone call, sorry" or "I actually have to meet someone somewhere" even if somewhere is the deli across the street or further down the train platform or whatever.

Actually de-escalating a confrontation without leaving is a whole other skill set that it would take more than a forum post to convey. Sort of like hostage negotiation. I used to work with severely mentally ill people mandated to inpatient treatment by the courts and there are many ways to redirect inappropriate behavior.

Bogus ticket?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I got a fairly bizarre parking ticket that I am questioning the validity of - not just whether it was a legal ticket but whether it's even real. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

I got a ticket for "blocked driveway." I took a picture of the car as I found it with the ticket to prepare to fight the ticket in court, because I was "blocking" approximately 6 inches of a 20 foot driveway. Weirder still the writing on the ticket was in very washed out, faded pencil that was barely legible. It seems to say that the ticket was given at 3:37 AM. It hadn't rained between that time and when I found the ticket at approx. 10 AM so I don't know why the writing looked so faded/washed out. I figured since you could barely make out the license plate written on it that might also help my case; I've fought tickets on similar grounds before.

However, this was not one of those pre-printed tickets (like for street cleaning) that lists the court date so I went on the NJMC site to get more info -and it can't find my ticket in the system. So I've been sitting on it for a couple of weeks now waiting for them to send me the missed court notice thing to see if the numbers match and to schedule a court date, and... I haven't gotten one. The ticket is from 7/19 so based on past experience I should have gotten a notice by now.

So we have:

1. A ticket given for dodgy reasons
2. Extremely faded barely legible writing
3. ticket not in system at njmc website
4. no missed court date notice

I will probably call about it later but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this kind of experience. I have another bizarre ticket at home, same deal with the faded writing and this one is for "signs posted 7/31" except it was issued on like 8/3 when whatever signs they were referring to had already been taken down, and this was in a legal spot on the weekend when there are no restrictions.

I checked this thread figuring it would have devolved into an argument about something else by now. I see we've moved on from gun control to stop and frisk. Not too long before we hit on off leash dogs and what supermarkets we'd like to see in JC.

Regardless, for those claiming S&F is not race based, I recommend reading this article. Even if you don't believe the guy it puts the implementation of S&F in a little more context.

Well, a young woman dying in a hit and run is pretty morbid. Life is morbid. I think it's a fitting tribute, it reminds people that we still have a major issue both with how people drive and cycle in the city. It sends a clearer message than just tying fake flowers and teddy bears to a fence like some roadside memorials I've seen (those quickly get very sad and shabby looking without upkeep).

Hey just because we love food doesn't mean we're fat. I hit up the farmer's market twice a week and do my best to put away several pounds of veggies a week. Balances out all the rice balls and zeppoles I ate at the feast.

In my experience, overeducated people like myself are the most neurotic about where they shop for food and what they buy. I currently bounce between 4 different grocery stores (from mom and pops to meat markets to a&p) but if there was a trader joes I would shop there exclusively because I'm a little obsessed.

I've never been to a fairway but now I'm intrigued!

As a downtown resident keeping a close eye on other neighborhood's real estate values, I personally find the heights more attractive than journal square right now. Journal square significantly improving is contingent upon redevelopment plans that have been promised but not delivered for over a decade. However, if Fulop makes it a priority it will come back sooner. His new tax abatement plan suggests that it is, and I heard he is also very supportive of the Loews theater.

This is the first person I can ever recall over here who was remotely violent, which he definitely seemed to have the potential to be. I am a little concerned because I live right there and walk my dogs all alone multiple times a day.

that's Johnny HardHat.

He's schizophrenic, but harmless. He enjoys wearing hardhats, playing his vuvuzela, and carrying an umbrella at all times.

He wears nicer clothes than most crazies, new outfit everyday. This leads me to believe he has a place to stay each night (family member, or otherwise) but is set free and wanders around during the day. He likes to stand on the corner of Jersey & Columbus and shout at passing cars. He looks lcean, well groomed, always has interesting accessories and props. He certainly has schizophrenia though.

Just cross the street or walk down another block if you want to avoid him. He's not assaulting anyone, so just ignore him. He's not at all violent.

He lives on Erie St. with his brother. Crazy, but not homeless.

Yeah he's harmless. Occasionally he even provides accurate traffic reports. My favorite line of his was him heckling people at an open house for the luxury condos on columbus and grove. He was yelling "and another, and ANOTHER, and ANOTHER ONE SAVED by WEICHART REALTY!" Now I repeat his line every time I see a Weichert sign.

How are we defining "people in Manhattan"?

There's a huge difference.

And I happen to know lots of people who lived in Manhattan that live in NJ- I'm one of them.

I live in JC, but I'd consider myself a lot more of a "New Yorker" than some hipster sitting on his Brooklyn stoop with a $5 PBR who spent his entire life up to 21-22 in middle America.

And I consider myself more of a New Jerseyan than a New Yorker which is saying something.

I have the accent, I went to college and grad school here, my whole family from my great-grandparents on has lived in New York since they came to this country, and many of them live in Manhattan...they all lived in Brooklyn when "Brooklyn Strong" meant escaping muggers not $6 latte or organic kale.

Those people are New Yorkers, that is the New York scene. There's a lot more "New York" about, say, the Italian festival on 6th Street last weekend than having a beard and riding a bike that your parents sent you when they visitied from the Iowa corn farm you were raised on.

::slow clap::

All these 20somethings who think "real NYers" = snobby Manhattenites should take a look at some of these photos of NYC from the 70s and 80s. Some of us remember the days when Times Square was a seedy place full of nudie bars and pickpockets, not a Disneyland for tourists like today. Or when the East Village, Lower East side, not to mention almost all of Brooklyn were places you hung out only if you grew up there, or if you wanted to live a little dangerously. Now the biggest danger in Park Slope is someone puts regular milk in your latte instead of soy.

The mentality on jclist is that the victim is in the wrong and shouldn't wear expensive things because you know, we can all get robbed at any time. That mentality is utterly stupid.

Your implication is that my fiance loves me less or is less committed because he (at my request) didn't spend a fortune on my ring. I hope if you marry that the person places the same premium on material displays of love that you do. Not being sarcastic. We should all marry people who agree with our values and are willing to forgo vacations or new cars for jewelry if need be (or go into debt to have all three...or be part of the 1% who can actually afford all that in cash).

I do agree about victim blaming but the thing with a ring is that you can also misplace it or lose it while swimming. A ring over say 2K should probably be insured against those kinds of losses.

Either this post is satire or the diamond industry has really got you by the balls.

My engagement ring cost $1200. Yes that's the price of the ring in the article minus a zero. It only cost that much because diamonds and platinum are super durable and I'd destroy anything less so with my clumsiness. It's lasted since the 20s in perfect condition so hopefully it will last a few more generations.

I don't want any more $$ on my finger than I'd be willing to lose in a mugging, in the ocean, etc. The "diamond as status symbol" reflects a set of values I don't relate to whatsoever. A relative of mine spent something like 15K on the ring, well guess what he is now getting divorced and he's not even 30 and without a prenup he cannot recoup any of the cost of the ring. Which sucks since he's also upside down on the house he bought with his now ex-wife. Even 7k would help him buy a reliable car instead of the beater he's stuck driving because the divorce wiped him out.

the best explanation I've heard is that transplants all dream of living in NYC and brooklyn counts but NJ doesn't. It's part of a general package of naivete and big dreams that draws people to nyc in the first place.

I wonder how many people move to brooklyn, last maybe a year or two, and then move out of the area entirely.

Other than people who grew up there and whose families own property, or people stuck in multigenerational poverty in public housing, it seems like brooklyn is more of a place for people who are young and transient.

I just saw someone posting looking for an apartment share or studio in brooklyn for under a grand. I suggested that their budget might go further in downtown JC. Their reply was that they bike everywhere and aren't interested in a train commute. It struck me that only person from a certain demographic would rather live in a shithole in brooklyn than a nice place in JC just because they prefer biking over taking the train.

If you prefer a bit more diversity of arts, music, and culture I think the Heights has a lot more potential than Bayonne right now especially given the recent arts rezoning.

Harrison is probably just dandy but I'd be wary of relying on Newark for night life. I work in Newark and I don't think I've ever stayed here later than 9:30 pm at night (except for qxts).

Re: Car Booted on First Offense

I am having trouble finding the letter, but it was basically something like "On such and such date and time a boot was placed on my vehicle (make and model). As of that date, I had received 1 court notice for a prior ticket. Two notices were delivered in that day's mail, not allowing adequate time for a response, making the boot in violation of current parking ordinances. I would like to request a refund of the booting fee."

This was sent on legal letterhead as a favor by a lawyer I know which may have helped it get a prompt response. But never underestimate what a formal looking letter sent certified mail will get you :).

Here's where I got the info on the ordinance:http://www.scribd.com/doc/58966708/Je ... roposed-Booting-Ordinance

And here is contact info for the person I dealt with, who was actually very reasonable and responsive (turns out he's also my friend's cousin - small world):

fat-ass-bike - thanks for the pointer on time discrepancy.

FYI - booting on first time offense is illegal. Per the local law one has to have 3 outstanding offenses before the car can be booted. JCPA Reserved Parking spots have the same law.

Jersey City in the past has admitted to illegal booting but has not taken any action in regards to that. JCPA is outsourced so someone in the government is making good money under the table.

There need to be 3 outstanding offenses AND 3 court summonses that have not been responded to. I know because I successfully got a boot fee refunded. I had 1 notice, and the other 2 arrived in my mailbox the same morning they booted me. That did not give me time to respond, and therefore violated the ordinance. I sent a letter on legal letterhead laying all this out and lo and behold, they actually refunded the fee.

The city was successfully sued for illegal booting a few years back so I think they are wary of it happening again.

I do like the idea of a food truck hub / court specifically catering to their type of business - They should form an association and buy some land and have a circle of vans on it (off-street lot) with toilet facilities and trash bins for them and their patrons.

Why don't the food truck hang-around for the local dinner crowds or venture into the non-business districts at lunch time?

There are maybe 4-5 trucks total by the Grove Path and usually 2 of them are parked in the plaza. That's hardly enough to cause parking issues.

The trucks do hang around for dinner. Non-business districts probably have far few customers. People who work in office buildings like food trucks because they're more affordable and varied than the office cafeteria or au bon pain or whatever.

Re: Homeless on Christopher Columbus

I used to live in Beacon Hill in Boston which is one of the nicest and most expensive neighborhoods there. John Kerry lived 4 blocks from me for reference. There were probably a dozen or more homeless who spent their time on Cambridge Street, which is roughly equivalent to Columbus Drive in downtown JC in terms of size, traffic, location, etc.

Part of why they were there was A. foot traffic and B. proximity to services. There were 3-4 food pantries/soup kitchens in the neighborhood including the nationally recognized Project Bread.

Homelessness is an URBAN issue, not just a downtown JC issue. Gentrification won't fix it, services alone won't fix it. If you're not willing to accept it as the reality, donate to a cause that aims to address the issue or volunteer yourself. I do both and it helps me feel like I'm doing more than just complaining.

Just Complain List is definitely an apt name...

I've said it many times before, but I am not going to see a food truck on my way to a sit down dinner and decide to eat from the food truck instead. They are different dining experiences. And if I want take out from somewhere in particular, it's unlikely that a food truck selling tacos or whatever is going to deter me from getting pizza or Thai etc.

Food trucks serve a market that is complementary to the brick and mortar market. As Matt said, more variety = better food culture = more residents to support eateries of all kinds.

I think before increasing bike lanes they need to do some sort of public outreach to cyclists AND motorists about the rules of the road. I both cycle and drive, and honestly both can be horrible. Cyclists blowing red lights, mowing people down on sidewalks. Cars speeding down Grand St. or taking turns without signalling.

I would like to see some sort of poster or billboard campaign highlighting rules of the road (i.e. share the road, both cars and bikes need to behave as vehicles, etc.). And maybe some events where they give out safety gear for cyclists - helmets, reflective gear, etc. I see so many cyclists without helmets and it's hard to understand given how people drive around here.
