This is a fake Jersey City travel and event guide I'm working on. Be careful about Groove on Grove towards the end. It has lady parts. If you have an event or a special place in Jersey City that you'd like me to cover, please email me at Melissa.Surach at gmail.com. Once I get enough video, I'll put a show together for public access with the travel guide featured in it.

Thousands raise $ in walk against breast cancer
Monday, October 20, 2008
By TOM SHORTELL
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Thousands of marchers, many donning pink T-shirts under their coats and sweatshirts, strode through the Newport section of Jersey City yesterday morning for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

The five-kilometer walk began at Exchange Place, where organizers set up tents housing a deejay, guest speakers, as well as tables to buy T-shirts and sweatshirts, before heading north on Washington Street and looping back.

As of yesterday morning, the American Cancer Society had raised more than $128,000 from the march, which had more participants than last year's 2,400, organizers said.

With $31,000 in pledges, Hudson County raised the most money of all the participating entities and County Executive Thomas DeGise raised the most of any individual participant with more than $3,800 in pledges, according to the walk's Web page at www.makingstrides.acsevents.org.

Many participants yesterday were cancer survivors, including County Clerk Barbara Netchert, who cut the ribbon to start the walk.

"To see all the people today, I can't tell you the satisfaction I feel," said Netchert, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985.

Knowing she wasn't alone with her struggles was an important factor for Netchert's recovery. "Reach out, and don't be afraid," she advised cancer victims.

For Estelle Munn, a Jersey City breast cancer survivor, the march was as much for people who have not yet been diagnosed as it was for people getting treatment. Her doctor originally diagnosed the lump she felt as a cyst. But Munn, whose grandmother died of breast cancer in 2004, sought a second opinion.

"Girls in their 20s, if they feel a lump, they need to get it checked," she said. "You need to keep pressing until you get an answer you can accept."

Maria Rivera, a Jersey City woman, was overwhelmed by the number of people participating in the walk.

"Oh my gosh," Rivera said. "I'm very emotional today."

Rivera was diagnosed in July and is currently undergoing six different treatments for three tumors.

Despite having a type of cancer that will claim the lives of 40,480 women in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society, Rivera said she's never lost hope or given into self-pity. "I've never said, 'Why me?'"

Hudson County will get its emergency notification radio station after all.

COUNTY NEWS ON THE DIAL
Monday, October 20, 2008
By PAUL KOEPP
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Hudson County will get its emergency notification radio station after all.

County Executive Tom DeGise announced Friday that the Federal Communications Commission has approved a travelers information station to be operated on the AM dial by the county Office of Emergency Management.

DeGise credited U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg with helping the county "work its way through the federal regulatory forest that comes with seeking approval for this kind of emergency government broadcast channel."

"Without the support of Frank Lautenberg, this station that will keep our residents safer in an emergency and better informed regarding local matters would never have become a reality," DeGise said in a news release.

The radio station, which will broadcast out of the OEM office in Secaucus and the soon-to-open County Plaza building in Jersey City, will complement an $800,000 system of sirens currently being installed throughout the county.

Officials said they will launch an informational campaign to make residents aware that if they hear the sirens, they should tune into the station.

Its spot on the dial has not been disclosed, but the station should be up and running within three months, said OEM Coordinator Jack Burns.

County officials had feared that a large proposed station in Rockland County, N.Y., would drown out any local broadcast. That application is still pending and could still present a conflict if approved, Burns said.

The county's new station will also be used to make community announcements, but cannot be used for political or commercial purposes, he said.

The $140,000 tab of installing it is being covered by federal homeland security grants.

"We believe communication is a key element to successfully dealing with an emergency or natural disaster," Burns said. "We are grateful for the county executive's leadership and Sen. Lautenberg's aggressive actions on this issue."

Neighbor, 61, restrains burglar

Monday, October 20, 2008

Restrained by a 61-year-old until police arrived, a 46-year-old Jersey City man was arrested Saturday after he was caught trying to crawl into and burglarize a garage, reports said.

The 61-year-old first spotted Keith Gray, of Woodlawn Avenue, walking through his Stevens Avenue backyard around 6:24 p.m., reports said.

Curious about who this stranger was, the 61-year-old stopped eating dinner and went outside to confront Gray, reports said.

But he couldn't find the stranger right away. He strolled down the block and then spotted Gray trying to crawl under the door of a neighbor's garage, reports said.

The 61-year-old rang the doorbell to alert his neighbor, an 80-year-old woman, and then grabbed Gray and held him - up against the garage, hands up in the air - until police arrived, reports said.

Robber's gun outmatches victim's bat

A Jersey City man tried to beat his robber off with a baseball bat Friday night, but the robber flashed a shotgun and got away with $1,635 in valuables, according to police.

The 26-year-old victim, a resident of Wayne Street, told police he and the man got into a beef over money. The Wayne Street man fled when the other man fired a gun at his car, reports said. But then the man who fired the gun called the victim on his cellphone and said he wanted to meet at the Colony Shopping Center on Grand Street, reports said.

At that meeting, the Wayne Street man told police that after a brief verbal spat, the other man stuck his hands in the victim's Lexus and grabbed the keys to his car, his driver's license, $700 in cash and a black Nokia cellphone, reports said.

The Wayne Street man then pulled out a baseball bat and whacked the man until he was bleeding, but the robber staggered to his black BMW X5, pulled a shotgun from the trunk and pointed it at the Wayne Street man, reports said.

The Wayne Street man then backed off and the other man drove away, reports said.

Jersey City company offers built-in scanner

Monday, October 20, 2008
By JACOB KAMARAS
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

If you find scanning documents a cumbersome process, you might be interested in a Jersey City-based product that scans, crops, saves and e-mails from your keyboard in a matter of seconds.

The KS810, the first computer keyboard with a built-in scanner, has been sold in the U.S. since April and is made by KeyScan, a small company headquartered in Downtown Jersey City.

The device looks like a standard keyboard. It can scan pages up to 8.5 inches wide and 30 inches long up to a clear-eyed maximum resolution of 600 dots per inch, taking five seconds for standard black and white images and 15 seconds for color.

"Everyone has a multifunctional scanner in the office, but for random scanning they don't want to get out of their chair," said Ophira Rosolio, the Israeli software engineer who developed the KS810 along with Dov Aharonson.

The product was first developed in Israel more than three years ago and is manufactured in China. KeyScan moved to Jersey City because of its reputation as a growing center of commerce, especially after Sept. 11th, Rosolio said.

With typical scanners, users have to go through the routine of opening scanning software, placing the document on the machine, cropping the image, picking a scanning setting, clicking to scan, saving the file, and finally opening the document for use from other applications.

With the KS810, pages are inserted into a slot in the upper right portion of the keyboard. With one click, the keyboard's "No Touch" software scans, crops and saves the document. Without pushing any more buttons, the device can then send the scanned documents to default functions including e-mail, fax, copy or print.

Pages come out the bottom of the keyboard and smaller items like business cards pop out the top. "It doesn't require additional space or hook-ups, it's part of your computer system," Rosolio said. "You scan where you need, when you need and what you need."

The KS810 sells for $159 and is available as J&R Music World and RCS stores. The company is working on securing distribution at Staples and P.C. Richards

Micky D's tour gets thumbs up -- from Council candidate Shelly Skinner

Micky D's tour gets thumbs up

Monday, October 20, 2008
By TOM SHORTELL
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Clean and well organized.

That's how education advocate and Jersey City City Council candidate Shelly Skinner described the McDonald's on Kennedy Boulevard after getting a behind-the-counter tour Wednesday as a "Moms' Quality Correspondent."

The Moms' Quality Correspondent program is a national initiative by McDonald's to battle the public's negative perception of fast food.

The program started in 2007 when six mothers were selected to review and blog about McDonald's facilities, ingredients, menu changes and sanitation to educate others, said Tara Hayes, McDonald's manager of U.S. communication.

"Moms in particular are interested in food quality," she said.

At the local level, McDonald's franchises are inviting prominent mothers in the community to take a look at what happens in its kitchens.

Celeste Quintana, who owns 10 McDonald's, four in Jersey City, played host to Skinner's tour, and Skinner walked away impressed.

"It was very clean. It was very organized. It was all fresh. It was a treat," said Skinner, mother of a 5-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy and a candidate for the Ward E council seat. "I wish everybody who takes care of children has the same sense of responsibility they do."

Still, both Skinner and Quintana agreed McDonald's is not a suitable choice for dinner all the time.

"My kids don't come here every day," Skinner said.

And Sharon Richter, a dietitian who has appeared on the TV show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," would say that's a very good thing.

McDonald's food has "very little nutritional value," Richter said, adding that the company's website for the moms program - www.mcdonaldsmom.com - "danced around" the nutrition issue.

But Paul Dillon, executive director of the Hudson County Community College's Culinary Arts Institute, saluted the McDonald's moms tour as a brilliant move.

"I think it's fabulous," Dillon said. "It makes the public more aware of how much work goes into that operation."

Jersey City ISN'T an "outer borough.

It's a WHOLE OTHER STATE! If you live here and work in NYC you HAVE TO pay NJ state tax.

I just hate when it's called "NYC's SIXTH borough." It's asinine and completely misleading. JC has very little to do with NYC, other than its proximity and the number of commuters into NYC.

Sometimes I wonder who drives these questions - Could it be realtors with too much time on their hands and an alternative way to drum up discussion on this topic. If it is, they should be concentrating on drumming up business on the otherside of the Hudson.

Age is wrong. Way too young, unless the ledger screwed it up.

Guy's f'd if they take it federal. NFA violations. ATF does not have a sense of humor about those.

Sad, the name Dave Murray is now known for firearm "incidents" in New Jersey x2, when it should only be known for this:

Has your permit expired?

They don't notify you or give you any grace period if it has.

You have to remember when you first got it and renew it every year before the expiration date.

There are 2 types of neighborhood parking permits. Zoned parking, and resident parking. Zoned parking allows you to park anywhere with a $15 zone sticker in the zone of many blocks you are assigned others can only park for up to 2 hours. Resident parking (green sign) is only for those that pay a large fee with a special "resident" sticker for an assigned block to park on all others can not park there at all. You better know which sticker you have and where you parked, making sure both sticker and parking spot coinside.

I had the same problem about a year ago. I had to go sit in court for about an hour, and when my case was called, it was dismissed in about 15 seconds. Unless things have changed, you'll have to go to court.

I got a parking ticket on Thursday for "parking without a valid permit" - my permit was clearly posted on my back left window. Has anyone else ever had this problem? If so, how do I avoid a day in court? When I called to complain they just said they would mail me a court date. What a hassle. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, and I was parked in my zone.
