I am aware of the comstat #'s as well, I was just referring to the past week, I know that everyone love to include Montgomery projects in downtown but for all intents and purposes Downtown ends at the highway.

Somebody has there numbers wrong check out this map

Re: Embankment- Update Thread
Home away from home
Home away from home

Interesting article on the High Line and the costs involved from Tuesday's AM NY.

http://weblogs.amny.com/entertainment ... _park_coming_on_line.html

The $170 million construction cost for the park has been taken of, with the city putting up $98 million, the federal government committing $22 million and the Friends of the High Line and others footing the rest of the bill.

...

However, the city will have to come up with 30 percent of the park?s annual $2 million to $3 million operating budget. And the Friends, which will oversee the 6.7-acre open space, is responsible for the remaining portion.

...

Concrete planks will be surrounded by vegetation meant to evoke the natural growth that took over before the train tracks were restored and new drainage put in. There may eventually be food concessions but there will be no dogs, bicycles or rollerblading allowed.

?It?s about meandering,? said City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden.

This is why people like myself do not want the Embankment turned into an overhead park. I grant that the High Line is four times the size of ours here in JC, but lets do some quick math. 170/4 is 42.5 million in initial costs. 2-3mil/4 is 500-750k every year. Given that the JC budget was about $800k short of actually meeting goal, and was cut 15 mil from the previous year, adding on significant expenses is not a good idea. 170 mil for meandering is beyond absurd.

Just because YOU believe doesn't make it so either.

Actually Downtown has 3 murders so far this year so your count is off. Also I don't believe it to be true I can prove it. Here are the crime stats and crime rates comparing Downtown to the Heights added up from the stats on the JCPD website and is from January to April.

CRIME STATS
------------------Downtown--------------Heights
Murder----------3--------------------------0
Rape------------4--------------------------2
Robbery--------51------------------------46
Agr. Assault---49------------------------51
Burglary--------68------------------------123
Larceny--------443-----------------------173
Auto Theft-----59-------------------------56
Arson-----------3---------------------------2
Total------------680-----------------------387

CRIME RATE
------------------Downtown--------------Heights
Murder----------7.8-----------------------0
Rape------------10.4----------------------4.3
Robbery--------132.1---------------------98.4
Agr. Assault---126.9---------------------109.1
Burglary--------176.1---------------------263.2
Larceny--------1147.4--------------------370.2
Auto Theft-----152.8----------------------119.8
Arson-----------7.8-------------------------4.3
Total------------1761.1--------------------1042.2

Population-----38,545------------------46,528

.....Below poverty level............50% below poverty level
07302....14.7%..................................4.8%
07307....13.1%...................................4.3%

Now to anybody reading this I am not attacking Downtown just trying to bring people like mwa7368 out of there fantasy world. I was raised in Downtown and it is my favorite neighborhood in JC but just because it is more expensive then the rest of the city doesn't make it safer. Although I will say it is overall one of the MANY safer areas in JC.

Re: The Beacon

in nj, abatement/pilot on luxury high-rises are usually the same or more expensive than actual property tax, and it's only deductible on the federal return.

the upside is the payment should be fixed for x number of years, so you dont have to worry about annual increase or assessment for the duration.

It's usually 1.65% of the first purchase price(new construction), after that all the subsequent owners pay that amount.

So if the first owner bought at 400k at the market top, second owner buys it for 300k, he's still paying 400k*0.0165 a year until he petitions to have it removed.

Two weeks ago I saw a 70-something woman near Holy Rosary take a small garbage-bag and drop it onto the sewer grate. She looked some regular old Italian lady to me, but perhaps I'm saying that because I was near the church.

She was a church-going, matronly litterbug. So, it's not just the high schoolers. This town and its sewers overflow with selfishness and shortsightedness.

When I lived in a multi-unit building at Coles and 9th Street the single family homeowners along Coles and 9th. would constantly leave their household trash in front of our building. It seems that people think it's okay to dump whatever they want in front of bigger buildings because those residents will take the blame.

I always make an effort to keep my street clean. I will often sweep up the areas in front of mine and my neighbors homes. BTW I Rent.

No audition, no committee. I wrote to Fulop about my garbage/JCIA concerns and he wrote me back about the possibility of putting together a meeting at City Hall with the CEO of the JCIA and a couple of other residents who coincidentally had written him with similar concerns. He is trying to get that meeting for June 3 @ 5:30 pm but nothing has been confirmed yet. If you would like to be a part of it write him an explain your take and ideas and ask him if it would be possible to participate. I'm not sure how many residents will be there or how big/small of a group he had planned for, but if you have some good points/ ideas that weren't already covered I can't see why you shouldn't be able to have input.
If for some reason Steve can't put the meeting together then maybe we should all meet and formulate some sort of plan w/ Stani and the crew. I'm just waiting to hear back from Steve for conformation.

Bicyclist, not "biker". A Tec-9 in one's pants while riding a bicycle must be pretty uncomfortable. The Tec-9 isn't a "machine gun" but perhaps the one he was carrying was converted to full auto.

I guess "biker with machine gun" gets a lot more attention than "bicyclist with crappy handgun".

JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

As three men on bikes rode past two plainclothes Jersey City cops heading west on Wegman Parkway at about 5 p.m. Saturday, the cops noticed something strange sticking out above one of the rider's pants legs, according to reports: the butt of a gun.

The cops, members of the department's Violent Crime Unit, yelled, "Police," and told the riders to stop, but the bikers pedaled north on Martin Luther King Drive to Bidwell Avenue, reports said.

The cops gave chase in their unmarked car, reports said.

The three bikers split up, so the cops stuck with the rider they suspected of carrying the weapon, who was later identified as 19-year-old Anthony Washington of Ocean Avenue, reports said.

At Bidwell and Martin Luther King Drive they saw Washington pull a Tec-9mm machine gun from his waist and toss it on the ground, reports said.

Washington also dropped his bike and ran, but backup cops caught up to him and arrested him on the porch of a Wegman Parkway building, reports said.

Found on the ground where Washington left it, the machine gun was loaded with nine hollow point bullets, reports said.

Washington was charged with, among other things, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, prohibited weapons and devices (the so-called Dum-Dum bullets) and resisting arrest, reports said.

Re: The Latest on the Backflow Prevention

Has anyone had experience (good/bad) with plumbers installing these backflow preventers and/or experience (good/bad) getting the certified inspection letter stating they're testable?

I was at the meeting and remember something about there being several kinds, and that the least expensive was called RPZ (?) and that was all we really needed - and that the most expensive types could cost $30-40K. We don't want to waste that kind of money but we also don't want to install something we can't get certified, so we're just looking for some recommendations.

Steve's letter, while helpful, only addresses whether or not your backflow preventer is testable - it doesn't really address what the process would be in the event you don't have *any* backflow preventer installed.

Re: Pavonia Ave between Erie and Manila

an aspect that seems to be missing here is the benefit provided by kids and teachers milling around during the day.

while crime is this part of downtown is not a concern, with the exception of the disappearing navigation systems from parked cars, having kids and adults around during the day significantly reduces the occurrence of petty crimes.

i am not telling that you should leave the door open during the day ....

personally, if i were to buy property again around hamilton park that stretch of pavonia would be prioritized.

perusing the for rent section of craigslist would certainly offer you better alternatives than what you are being offered.

my experience is that some of the smaller landlords in jersey city are squeezed due to the economy and whatnot, so if you are really looking for a deal, your best bet is to see what the local small landlords have to offer.

$3k for a 2br is a joke. you could get a decent 2br for half the price in "certain" downtown sections and approx $2k at the "nicer" areas ....

but $3k .... my god!

Yes, Healy's example.........

.....and Kevin Freibott's example (of Pulaski Skyway-fame)

......and Martin Abreu's example (of Lower Manhattan-fame a few months ago, and whose luminary of a mother said "So my son went out and had a couple of drinks. He deserves to have a good time now and then.").

Hey, and the other cop this past weekend only punched a woman (yes, that's sarcasm on the "only") ---- at least he didn't shoot an ex-girlfriend in front of the West Precinct before cowardly shooting and killing himself. Oh wait ---- that was JC cop Julio Reyes in March 2003.

Go one, Sam.

So yer telling us -- the hapless innocents -- that when we find ourselves confronted by one of JC's finest we can question the cop and demand to examine his badge, id, whatever if we think the cop is a phony?

Sounds like an invitation to get one's ass kicked or to get charged with resisting arrest.

And guess what? I've seen it happen several times.

This city, except for the fire department, is run by fools. Every bloody agency, department, whatever, is out for itself.

Damn the citizenry should be JC's motto.

You've seen the election results same as me.

We are 1 week into the next 4 years of Healy, Comey, Flood & Co.

So tell me who is in a position to do something about it?

You are!

Take your passion for the subject and get involved in your community. If you are already doing that, awesome, keep it up! Present us with options and tactics that we can activate to help you fight crime in the city. Work with the politicians you favor and help them pass legislation that will make us safer. Join an advocacy group. Write a thinly veiled novel about the horrors of JC politics and crime. Call Arnie Diaz. Start a blog dedicated solely to crime in JC. Get a public access show. Protest in front of city hall.

As a last resort, move.

But to continue to beat your point to a bloody pulp on this site is a crime in and of itself. Not to mention tiresome and counterproductive.
