Re: Greenville: 23-year-old Jersey City man fatally shot in head this morning

Thanks for the tip, I think I may do just that! I'd rather live among hicks then gang members and drug dealers. Take Manville for instance, I doubt that they've had 14 murders or any murders yet this year. But hey, most of you would rather get shot then have neighbors that shop at wallmart.

Keep in mind also that having the kids arround all day can lead to inappropriate mischief. I don't own a car but I sometimes rent one. A while ago I had rented a car and parked it on Pavonia half a block away from the school. One morning as I approached the car I caught a few of the kids from the Cordero school playing around with the gas tank opening on the side of the car and others simply leaning and sitting on the car. Since it was a rental car I didn't really care all that much. But if I owned a car that's not something I would want to have to be concerned about all of the time.

Why don't you do us all a favor and migrate back to west Jersey where you came from. You probably moved here to piss of your parents and impress your hick buddies with how "tough" you must be to move to JC.

Newport actually became much cheaper this year. I have a friend whose rent for a 1 BR was $2300 last year, and got a $300/month discount when he asked, and then another $50/month discount when he pressed again.

Hey at least I take the improvement of the species seriously, thats why I married a blonde with blue eyes... my being half jewish and all. All jokes aside though, eugenics isn't so bad for eradicating genetic defects and hereditary diseases. This is why blood tests were once required for couples to get a marriage license.

I don't get what the point of the map is? Yes the Heights had a few more murders then Downtown in 2008. The year before that Downtown had two more then the Heights. I don't get your point that doesn't change my stats in any way. The fact remains other then burglaries there is more crime Downtown then the Heights. Which you didn't believe to be true.

As far as the border I believe we had that discussion already in the past so if it helps you sleep better at night, then believe what you want. At the end of the day the city is still going to have its original borders.

stop confusing things, newport is a very specific bubble area. Its price is a lot higher than rest of downtown.

1br is 2k, so 3k for 2br is reasaonble, although you may get some sort of deal renting from owners directly than lefrak.

however price is not outrageous, it's the going rate.

This morning at Pavonia Ave. and Coles Street. Lo and behold the a-hole in the silver Volvo wagon, who always drives like an aggressive douche in this neighborhood, blows through the Stop-sign when he sees the other driver actually obeying the law. The PATH SUV following him does stop followed by another vehicle doing the classic roll through.

I'm not sure if your comment was directed at me but the 3 murders in the stats have nothing to do with the shooting at the piers I know they are alive. If that is what you were referring to?

Do you know if the one that was critical is pulling through or is he in pretty much the same condition?

so if healy can't do it, forced migration (refugees) and negative eugenics (eradication) are the only options? this approach sounds SO familiar! but i can't place it. let's play a game of word association. maybe that will jog my memory... what comes to mind when people talk about negative eugenics and the forced displacement of civilians to purify and/or save the rest of a community?

3 bullets in back kills man, 14th city homicide this year

Wednesday, May 27, 2009
By TOM SHORTELL
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Shot three times in the back Monday night, a 27-year-old Greenville man has become Jersey City's 14th homicide victim this year and the county's 15th, officials said.

Responding to reports of gunshots outside 143 Fulton Ave. late Monday, police found Kareem Hilliard, a resident of Bidwell Avenue, bleeding on the sidewalk, officials said.

Hilliard was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m., said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

Police initially believed Hilliard was shot in the chest, but an autopsy Tuesday revealed he was shot three times in the back and at least one bullet exited through the chest, DeFazio said.

William Hinton, who lives across the street from where the shooting happened, was in his kitchen when he heard three shots ring out. From his front door, he watched as the victim was wheeled into an ambulance. "I see it all the time. It's nothing new," Hinton said.

Police have not identified any suspects or a motive for the shooting, but it does not appear to have been a robbery, DeFazio said. He also ruled out any connection with Sunday's shooting of 23-year-old Marion Ortiz at Rose and Grant avenues.

Police now believe Ortiz's death was the result of a previous dispute with another person, DeFazio said. He would not give further details on the nature of the dispute or whether police have questioned the other person.

The shooting represents the 14th murder in Jersey City this year. Last year, 16 murders were committed in the city through May 27, 2008.

A tractor trailer is stuck under a roadway at Henderson Street between 18th Street and Observer Highway at the Jersey City/Hoboken border, according to photographer Joe Shine.

The clearance for the underpass is 12 feet, 3 inches, Shine said.

The roadway and bridge are in good shape, but the truck has suffered a lot of damage, he added.

Tips for a (successful) Stoop Sale
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

Hi all - I'm thinking about doing a stoop sale, and this will be my first time. I'd like to ask people here how I can make it a successful one.

I'll mainly be selling used baby / toddler clothes, toys, and used woman's clothing.

Any tips / recommendations would be appreciated, such as:
1. what should be the price points for the baby toddler clothes, woman's clothes, and toys?

2. what time of the day works best? (I live on montgomery Str, close to city hall)

3. should I hang up some of the merchandize or just leave everything in big plastic bins?

4. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Two Jersey City cops arrested Memorial Day weekend

by Michaelangelo Conte
The Jersey Journal
Tuesday May 26, 2009

Two Jersey City cops were arrested down the shore this weekend including one charged with punching a woman in the head and another with driving while intoxicated after doing nearly 90-miles-per-hours in a 25-miles per hour zone, officials said.

Officer Brian McGovern, a 10-year veteran of the department, was arrested yesterday by the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department and charged with two counts of simple assault, Jersey City Police Lt. Edgar Martinez said.

McGovern was allegedly involved in a fight in which he also punched the woman and a man, officials said.

Jersey City Police Officer Kevin Cieslak, a two-year member of the department, was arrested in Belmar by the New Jersey State Police yesterday and charged with driving while intoxicated, officials said.

Cieslak was allegedly involved in a collision with a bread truck and he left the scene of the accident, but was pulled over driving 89-miles-per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone, officials said.

Cieslak was issued summonses for refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, running a red light and driving in the opposing lane, officials said.

Cieslak's brother, former Jersey City Police Officer Joseph Cieslak, was fired in October 2007 after pleading guilty to official misconduct for playing cards with friends who were smoking pot and not reporting the unlawful activity, officials said.

The card game was at the Laidlaw Avenue home of a convicted drug dealer who was on probation at the time, officials said, adding that police found marijuana and a gun in the apartment.

The Jersey City Police Department is gathering information on both incidents and an investigation is being conducted by the department's Internal Affairs Unit, according to a statement released by Police Director Samuel Jefferson and Police Chief Thomas Comey today.

Both officers were off-duty at the time of their arrests and they have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation, officials said.

"We believe that these are isolated incidents and are not indicative of the hard work our men and women provide the residents of Jersey City," said Jefferson and Comey.

Anyone with information on the holiday arrests should contact the municipalities where they occurred.

Re: Embankment- Update Thread
Home away from home
Home away from home

Thank you for the link. I saw a similar one.

Perhaps those costs are not so easily transferable as that. But, before that: there already is (some) money for the Embankment.

As to costs:

(1) costs of the site remediation and materials will be different, and perhaps more uniform.
(2) costs of the bridges will vary depending on whether they're built to include the light rail.
(3) light rail, if there is one, will augment the costs
(4) construction downtown will impact costs
(5) JC is a cheaper environment in general than NY, and poses different logistical problems.

... and what's the "cost" of job creation? ...and what's the "cost" (value) of public parks. Obviously meanderers and flaneurs place a higher value on it than you may.

Blah, blah, blah. Truth be told... until it's spec'd out in greater detail the front-end costs may be difficult to estimate.

On a separate note: I still support the idea of the light rail ON Sixth Street. That would mean less energy (no need to go uphill) and infrastructure (smaller bridges) as compared to having the light rail on the Embankment. That bit starts here:
