Re: You call this a revolution?
Home away from home
Home away from home

NJ.com:

About 50 people turned up tonight to rally in support of the Jersey City redeveloper anti pay-to-play ordinance. But when they got there, Councilman Steve Fulop, the rally's organizer, told them not to do so.

Why?

Fulop said he thought he had the votes and that he didn't want to antagonize the council with a rally.

The protesters didn't come out in vain, however. They came into the City Council meeting, signs and all and spoke in favor of the ordinance.

Um, where were you guys tonight?
Some thoughts on the "revolution" that's supposedly underway in our fair city.

"On the day when the first two pins fell in the Great Corruption Scandal of 2009, it seemed the perfect time for reformist elements in the city to build on last month?s day of outrage with a follow-up rally at city hall that would blow the roof off the sucka! To really show that public discontent had reached a boiling point. We?re fired up! Can?t take it no more! and all that."

They failed inspection by the health department and were supposed to be shut down for a month.....They never reopened. Popeyes has already started moving fixtures in.

He's a mentally ill old man whose family has abandoned him to live alone after his mother died earlier this year. It is a very sad story. He shouldn't be living there by himself-he needs to be taken care of and can't do so himself. However that does not mean that we as neighbors must endure his screaming and be kept awake at all hours of the night. I suggest to all people who live near him that they call the police when he is outside yelling in the middle of the night so that he can be taken in, evaluated and given the proper services.

Does anyone else hear the guy who's been screaming for like over an hour near 3rd or 2nd around Jersey Avenue? He's totally out of control.

I went wandering around the place the other day. With all the windows open, the traffic is actually a lot more noticable than it is from street level. I was surprised.

The only Chinese buffet I know of in Jersey City is Kowloon next to A&P. It's not necessarily good though...

It was locked this morning at 5:55 am. I need to make a 6:22 train, so I couldn't wait to see if they actually arrive at 6 am to open it. It didn't seem like they do. There was no one in sight.

It's so frustrating to have to walk around or take the light rail when there's no good reason to lock this thing.

Tomorrow I will wait there until 6 am to see if it actually opens on time.

Really??? Pretty sure it wasn't a dream....for the record they were not parked there at 5:45 tonight (along with another taco truck) but were further down in a safe spot. I'm going back for tacos later cuz they were not set up yet....If they have moved back to obstructing traffic I'll be sure to take pictures for you. Hopefully you have nothing to do with controlling parking in our fair village which would explain a lot.

Good chance it was Corzine indeed. He is usually in an SUV (despite his claims of green-ness) .

Police Escort Last Night

Did anyone else see a JCPD car escorting an SUV yesterday?

They were heading on Marin (but there was quite a bit of traffic) so they took a right on Columbus. Lights flashing from the JCPD car but no sirens. The SUV behind him was either silver or gold. They turned on Washington St. and continued North. A few min later I saw a JCPD SUV (again lights but no sirens) trying to catch up to them but he was going on Greene St, then merging onto Washington.

The only reason why im posting this is because it makes me curious if that was Corzine. I know he has a place in Hoboken and thats kinda where they where heading. But then again, why was it JCPD cops and not state police.

The fact that they can close the bridge doesn't mean they will. Come back if you see it actually closed at night.

So does that mean Lefrak is taking responsibility if someone is mugged on the sections that are open? Will Lefrak compensate someone mugged on the streets of Newport?

Dirty Jersey: Two Guilty Pleas Expected in Corruption Probe
Two Jersey City officials expected to plead guilty in federal court today
By JONATHAN DIENST
Updated 12:00 PM EDT, Wed, Sep 9, 2009

The two officials expected to plead guilty today were arrested in corruption and money-laundering sweep that netted 44 people.

Two Jersey City officials are expected to plead guilty today in connection with the large corruption investigation that resulted in 44 arrests in July.

Guy Catrillo, a member of the Mayor's 'Action Bureau' and Maher Khalil of Jersey City's Health and Human Services Department are expected in federal court in Newark. A spokesman for the US Attorney's office would only say two unnamed officials would be making a court appearance.

The duo are expected to plead guilty, according to two sources. An FBI spokesman declined comment. Defense attorneys Michael Pedicini and Michael Koribanics did not immediately return calls as their offices said they were en route to the federal courthouse.

Khalil is charged with taking $30,000 in bribes while Catrillo is accused of taking $15,000 in improper payments. An FBI informant had posed as a developer willing to make illegal payoffs.

The pair were part of the massive FBI sweep of public officials and rabbis called 'Operation Bid Rig.' The investigation centered on numerous New Jersey public officials who allegedly took bribes. A parallel track of the probe focused on religious leaders accused of running a money-laundering ring. One man charged in the case is accused of trying help sell body parts for transplant.

With the expected guilty pleas, it is unclear if Catrillo and Kalil are cooperating with authorities and naming names. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy did meet with the FBI informant in the case but denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged.

any more updates on the hours being illegal?

i'd like to go down there around 9:15 just to see. Does it have anything to do w/ security? are they just too cheap to keep the lights on/ security going? that would seem par for the course. Millions on a walkway thats closed during the busy hours. They probably didn't make a big deal of a ribbon cutting b/c of all the uproar about the hours. You know the people in charge, keep their heads in the sand and avoid, avoid, avoid.

I've heard that some of the businesses on Grove near City Hall get rent subsidies -- just heard, but I think I heard it here even -- couldn't someone subsidize a freaking bookstore? .

If that's true it's probably because the landlords (probably the Silvermans who developed the Majestic and surrounding buildings) have many other continuing interests in the area and think long-term. A thriving and interesting street makes the nearby properties more valuable. Unfortunately, most landlords just want to maximize the income from their stores.
