Sorry to say that given what you are looking for this definitely wont fit your profile Sean. I am sure Binghamton was a much better fit for you when you lived there. Since you just moved to JC last year and might not know...it takes me less time to get to my office in Newport than when I lived in Portside Towers in Paulus hook, and I don?t have a car. Try somewhere else for your need to live far away from things. Unfortunately for you we also have ?modern amenities? like electricity...we are working on this whole running water thing that we keep hearing about;)

So Sean ? I just glanced at your profile?your all-time JCLIST history is:

17 negative posts about the beacon (71% of all your posts)
7 posts about other topics (29% of all your posts)
I suggest you start a new username here and mix in some more random posts about other things. This way people might not be able to tell that you are losing something to the Beacon and trying to smear?good luck!

Re: CAMPING and using public transportation to get there

Home away from home

I have never been car camping, only backpacking and hiking. I would be interested to hear the recommendations as I have some friends who are only willing to car camp. This link may help for NJ: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.html

Locally I prefer the Catskills to the NJ highlands, or the Adirondacks if you want to drive 3-4 hours.

As for cold weather camping it is not uncomfortable if you have the right gear (no cotton). So far I havent set out to cold weather camp but my girlfriend and I made it through 20 degree nights on a backpack through Yosemite. I am debating getting a 4 season tent and negative degree bags for a snowshoe/backpack in Montana this March. If I do that I may have a whole new outlook on cold weather camping.

Left a dog there while on vacation once. Seemed great, I dont know what kind of shampoo they use but the pup smelled good forever. No real experience with other places however. They get to be outside and play alot. They will show you around the place if you want to just look.

Hey Ralph, my hobby is photography, I spend a lot of my free time exploring the metro area. Can you clue me in to any locations you know about that are historical, ornate, and look like the Beacon? I would love to explore a place like that.

I've been to Wilzig, been to St Vincent?s in Manhattan, my mother works for the St Clair?s system of hospitals in NJ. I have photographed abandoned hospitals and infirmaries from the period in Queens, Staten Island and Maryland. Is Christ Hospital worth a visit? Doesn't look like much from the outside...I have never seen a hospital remotely similar to the Beacon...terrazzo floors, carved wood, stone carved freezes inside and out, theaters, ornate fixtures, balconies, etc, etc. I always figured it was from the one of a kind way it was built. A powerful corrupt mayor with a crazy vision, the president he got elected (FDR), and therefore the millions in federal funding...

Hi Mary, and whomever Brokenyc is. From time to time I did disagree with him on the forum but I didn?t have an experience with censorship so I cant speak to that. Putting censorship and whether or not you agree with his positions aside, I felt he stepped up to the plate for the Beacon. From what I gather he did a lot of heavy lifting for the complex when it was a fledgling community, much beyond the message board.

So...just to make sure, you know our water does not come from Hudson county, correct?

What did your water test reveal? Did you send it to a lab or do the home depot kit? I considered a lab but did the Home Depot kit and mine came out fine.

The thing that freaks me out is that United Water has a PASS on testing our water for VOC's...why on earth would they have a pass on that?

I assume the JCMUA is listed as a water polluter because like NYC we have a combined storm/sewer system. When it rains hard it can overflow. I walk by the outflow in newport by Micheal Anthony's almost every day on my way to my office and see raw sewage coming out much of the time.

Nice, great capture.

In the past couple of years while hiking around the area have noticed Bald Eagles in a couple spots within 50 miles of here. Seems like the environment in this area may be making a comeback.

Re: Wave of gentrification that leapfrogged the Hudson has reached new heights - Jersey City Heights
Home away from home
Home away from home

Christine stated it succinctly and well. If you are truly happy living in the heights, capable of living elsewhere but happy where you are it might not be worth your effort sticking to your guns here. For a bit I was wrapped up in identical threads trying to get people here to understand that sentiment about me and where I live in JC. I thought about it and came to the conclusion that it really wasn?t worth any effort or time.

I watched the posters here do this to people in other areas of JC. I came my own conclusion that anyone who rejects the possibility that someone else can like a place just fine compared to their place?but they are still adamant that their place is better, adamant that anyone who thinks differently is wrong fall into one or more of the following:

1) People that actually don?t know what they are talking about, never lived there, never experienced it but think they know it all and/or are opinionated enough to assert what they think as if it is fact.
--These people are not worth it because they will defend their position to no end as they can not be wrong?after all they know it all.

2) People who could have some experience, maybe, maybe not. Lets just assume they got the facts right and know?their place is just better, and you are wrong for saying otherwise. They could have been raised?or society told them?or they otherwise learned what is ?right?. This many times means criteria need to be lined up in a tight range around whatever the mold is for ?right?. If not it doesn?t fit and to them is wrong. In this case for a place to be OK some aspects of where they live must meet criteria X, Y, and Z?e.g. no vinyl sidings or something. They may very well need these things for them to feel comfortable that a place is good, etc. Anything outside of this can easily be seen as ?wrong?. They are convicted of this and may fail to comprehend that other people may not need the same things lined up for a place to be ?right?. If they get this, they may think the other person is wrong for believing in their own version of ?right?.
--These people are not worth it because they have a conviction, a belief, a paradigm they hold?while not of the same magnitude it is like arguing with a religious zealot that there is no god, or an atheist that there is a god. They might not be able to see out of their box. Their box is comfortable for them, let them live in their comfortable box.

3) Insecure ? Some people are insecure and perhaps it feels good to openly air their position as correct and/or invalidate others in an online forum. If they were indeed secure and happy they would have no desire to do this, it would serve no purpose.
--These people are not worth the time. They are insecure so you can succeed in getting across to them but that could make them feel worse than they already did about themselves.

4) small man in life, BIG man online ? this doesn?t need an explanation I hope. Be submissive, make them feel big?your making someone happy. Come on, be nice, it would really suck to have this affliction.

5) Unstable ? Berates others to make themselves feel better/superior/etc ? also no need for an explanation. Illogical.

6) Troll ? likes conflict, your response is feeding them, feed as you like.

Just my thoughts...I would guess most here fall into number 2, some number 1 and some winners?the rest.

No horror stories, been doing it for a while. Some let you specify the percent of your $$ that goes to the different types of energy (wind, small hydro, etc).

Nobody is an individual in the purest sense, but I see a lot of people coming to JC who have adopted seemingly identical lifestyles and the predictable desires that go with it. I'd have to be unaware of my surroundings not to notice that something stinks about it, and I don't buy into the attitude that it has to boil down to a choice between a violent, drug-addicted, homeless pedophile car thief pissing in my vestibule and American Outfitters.

I think something about human nature prevents the individual, something similar to the pack mentality. I always think it is funny when people go to ends to be "different" by joining all the other similarly looking/acting different people.

When I was in undergrad after a long night out I got a call from a girl I wanted to go see. I decided to be safe and pedal there as I was in no shape to drive. I started the ride in all kinds of good spirits. I ended with a fractured scapula, a broken collar bone, and a bunch of road rash. At least nobody else was involved and the bike wasn?t even scratched. I considered it a good lesson learned, hah!

Given the way you feel I am surprised you have willingly chosen to live next to the cement plant year after year.

Speaking of potential air pollution in that area...do you know what that structure is across the street from the Morton Williams? I was looking at it the other day trying to figure out if it is an automobile exhaust vent for the holland tunnel or not.

I just saw it outside my office when getting lunch, I think it was put up today.

Anyone have any idea what purpose it serves? It looks like large two megaphones pointed in each cardinal direction on top of a large metal pole. It is in the middle of Washington blvd between the PATH and the light rail.

Do they need to blast for the new PATH station entrance or something?

FYI, Hollywood video's customer service response is below, seems pretty fair to me. I had asked if i needed to go to another store to return or if there was another method of return.

--begin response--

Thank you for contacting us regarding the DVDs you rented from the closed store in Jersey City.

If mailing the movies in is more convenient for you, you are welcome to mail the to us. The can be sent Media Mail to

Customer Relations
9275 SW Peyton Lane
Wilsonville, OR 97070

Of course, since the store has closed, no Additional Rental Charges would apply in the interim.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please do not hesitate to email us at: E-Mail-Us@hlyw.com.

I rented a couple of DVDs last week from the Hollywood video on Grand St next to the Pathmark. I went to return them yesterday and they were closed with a sign indicating it was permanent. The sign had a place to reference another location but didn?t. Any idea what happened? I assume it was sudden. If it was expected I would think they might have mentioned they wouldn?t exist by the time the movies were due back! Is the next closest one really in Union City? I have to return these DVDs somewhere I assume?

Re: PSE&G Supply Energy Question
Home away from home
Home away from home

I signed up with NJ and PSE&G to try to ensure my money and power consumption goes to further local ?clean renewable energy?.

I receive a premium on my energy bill every month from PSE&G. The line item for me is ?COMMUNITY ENERGY, INC. Clean Power Charges?

My understanding is that the same amount of energy I consume will be generated via local "clean energy" and put into the power grid for the mid-atlantic region which we are all sort of on. This is because there are no direct providers. I think (or hope) that PSEG has to pass my payments, minus distribution charges, to this clean energy provider. When I set it up it was very flexible you could choose what percent you wanted to fund small hydro, wind, etc? You could even decide if you wanted to buy a certain number of kilowatts or match your consumption.

Here is where i signed up: http://www.njcleanenergy.com/renewabl ... cleanpower-choice-program

My understanding is our energy comes from a coal fired plant on the western border of JC and that it is a large emitter of air pollution.
