So it turns out this guy is single-handedly responsible for, what, almost half the murders in Hudson County so far this year?

Yup. Metropolis Towers posted a bunch of things about how important it is to fill out the census, but we never got the forms themselves!

Can you pick them up at any post office, or just the census centers?

I believe the TV installation still isn't actually finished, and they're supposed to be much more informative once they connect up the system to announce when the next train is.

They're pretty good at announcing the station cleaning closures, at least.

Everything I've read suggests that Walgreens won't be rebranding any of the Duane Reades anytime soon. If they do it will be years down the road.

A good location would be the new tower at Metropolis (Between Marin and Warren). The approved project calls for 40,000 sq feet in Retail. It will be facing Columbus at the street. That would be much more appealing than the suburban super market like Shop Rite & BJ's.

The only problems are:

-project does not look like it will get off the ground for awhile.
-40,000 sq feet will be too small for a trader joes.

I can dream i guess.

Seems like the construction has been delayed by the whole ground contamination thing... the empty space between the towers is a Superfund site. Once they get the chromium out of the soil things might get back on track, but who knows at that point?

Pretty much anything would look better than the fenced-off concrete slab that's there now.

I stopped by here on my way home from work, and they only had teeny tiny containers of Swedish pearl sugar. But oh my god this store. I am going to have to pretend it doesn't exist or I'll end up buying everything in it.

I want to make my own sugar waffles, so I'm looking for Belgian pearl sugar. I can crush sugar cubes if I have to, but it'd be nice to find the real stuff.

I don't have dental insurance, so I haven't been to a dentist in years, but I think it's time now. What's the most affordable place to go in the area? I don't want to get stuck paying thousands for a couple of fillings, and most private dental insurance doesn't actually start covering anything substantial until you've had it for a year or two.

The Aeropress makes this odd concentrated coffee (it's not espresso even if it claims it is), and once that's in the cup you add the rest of the hot water to dilute it. You can add as much as you like to decrease the strength, but I've found that the aeropress makes the smoothest, least acidic coffee I've ever had and I've never needed to water it down. It's a strange little device and a somewhat annoying to store/clean, but the coffee's delicious.

Get an Aeropress. It's like $25, bizarre looking, works differently than any other coffee maker I've ever encountered... and makes utterly amazing coffee.

It's primarily brake dust -- the path uses rubber brakes, which the subway does not.

SmartLink cards actually DO cost a good bit more to make than a metrocard -- there's actually a chip inside them, and they're designed to last. (Someone managed to get the chip out of an Oyster card -- the card they use in the London tubes -- and put it into a magic wand!) The $5 fee is annoying, yes, but it's mainly there to get people to treat the card with a little more care than you would a Metrocard or paper ticket.

I glanced at the survey, decided there was no way it could be unbiased with a name like \"pathsux\", and didn\'t get past that question because I can take either the 33rd or WTC train.

On the whole I rather like the PATH. The unlimited cards are cheap, it runs 24 hours, and the new trains are quiet and shiny. Sure, there could be more night/weekend service, and the PA announcements are spectacularly irritating, but I really don\'t mind it for the most part. The worst commutes for me are the ones where the other passengers are the problem, not the train.

Re: New PATH Flat Screens

The annoying thing is that they don't seem to update them on weekends -- the most common time for people to get stuck waiting around for a train. Having something to read would actually be helpful then.

Re: New PATH trains, then more zip
Home away from home
Home away from home

I keep seeing the new trains running as deadheads, but I've only managed to ride one twice. The PATH twitter feed (which is much more fun if you imagine it being written by an actual train) says there's only one new train in passenger service but they're testing at least two others.

Have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised at how non-intrusive the TV screens are. I was worried they'd be really annoying even without audio, but they're small and hard to see unless you're actively looking for them.

Meanwhile, the three car trains (!) they were running last night were absolutely packed. Never seen that before -- they managed to squeeze my train AND another super-short train going the other direction onto a single track at Hoboken.

I really wish there was slightly more service right around midnight. I often get stuck working late, and having it take forever to get home on top of the extra hours in the office is really no fun at all. Last night I was so sleepy that the tiny train was just about the most disorienting thing ever.

Worth checking with the office in Metropolis Towers in person -- they don't always advertise what's available. And people occasionally post listings on the laundry room bulletin board there for by-owner rentals. Rents can vary widely since you can rent from both individual co-op owners and the companies that run the building.

I think rental units are much less common in Montgomery Towers because it's mostly a co-op.

Re: Who here really, really hates Comcast?

The basic-est basic one (what I have) runs about $40/mo when you add in the tax and fees. It's another few dollars to get channels like Discovery and TNT. Comcast has a deal elsewhere that's $29.99/mo for digital cable for a year, but for some reason it's not available in Jersey City.

Thanks. I looked around but couldn't find anything explaining that. You think they could have mentioned this was going to happen instead of just cutting them off in the middle of a show I was watching!

Ugh. If I have to buy a converter box just to get PBS back, I think I'm also buying an antenna and cancelling my cable entirely.

I have comcast standard cable (non-digital) and NJN and WLIW both went out at the same time a couple days ago and have not returned. The rest of my channels are fine. Anyone else having the same problem?

Also: why is the $29.99/mo for 12 mo digital cable deal available everywhere comcast serves EXCEPT jersey city?

I've been coming home very late at night from work lately, and have seen them testing the new screens. Looking forward to having something updated more frequently than "Pathvision," which always seemed like a massive waste of TVs. Alas, no more "Getting TRAIN BRAIN? How about a little TUNNEL VISION?"

Re: Ferry sends S.O.S. -- NY Waterway's owner says next berth is Chapter 11

The ferry drives me crazy. They have a route that goes from right near my apartment to closer to my work than the PATH, as well as a free shuttle bus that goes almost directly to my office. It's not at all walkable without the bus, but guess what? The bus only runs at times when the ferry doesn't! And *neither* of them run during the times when I am going to or from work.

Maybe NY Waterway can stay afloat taking people to downtown once the Port Authority stops the weekend PATH service to WTC?
