Unbelievable!! 18 hours later and still parked illegelly in the crosswalk...shameful. I have written to the East District Police, The JC Parking Authority and cc'ed Fulop about this matter, even sent them the photos. This is a serious safety issue, can you imagine the danger a woman (or a man for that matter) crossing that intersection with a baby carriage would be in! The police should LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

The corner of Newark and Second St is a very dangerous intersection to cross, I was almost struck by a car trying to cross there today around 1pm! There is a white Acura DMX that is always parked in the crosswalk there that causes a blindspot for oncoming cars. The Acura must be owned by a police officer because the plates have FRATERNAL ORDER of POLICE on it. If that officer is reading this, with all due respect please stop parking in the crosswalk. You are creating a danger for crossing pedestrians, thank God I didn't have a baby carriage! As you can see from the pics, others also park on the corner illegally, PLEASE STOP PARKING on the CORNER OF NEWARK and SECOND!!! I am going to send these pics to the parking authority as well. I keep seeing the spray painted tag "SUN" on Newark Ave, I would love nothing more then for him to get busted. These graffiti pests need to stop polluting the downtown area with this garbage. I see businesses painting and fixing up the front of their places only to have them spray painted over with sensless tags. They need to be delt with harshly.

Cops square off with crowd, one arrested
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal Tuesday August 26, 2008, 1:19 PM Members of a violent crowd threw bottles at police officers after a narcotics arrest last night, at Bostwick Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive, reports said. Numerous officers responding to the "open air drug market" at 6:39 p.m. arrested Quadia Culbreath, 20, of Bostwick Avenue, reports said. Culbreath was charged with obstructing a government function, resisting arrest and failing to disperse, reports said. As backup officers arrived at the trouble spot they were confronted by an unruly crowd of 30 to 40 people, who were cursing and throwing bottles, reports said. As the cops tried to break them up more people joined the crowd and Culbreath showed up with six to eight people, reports said. The officers ordered Culbreath's group to leave and he began cursing at the cops, and telling the others, "Don't listen to these mother (expletive). This is our 'hood," reports said. When Culbreath was told he was under arrest he put his hands up in a fighting stance, reports said; he then backed up into a vacant lot and squared off with the cops saying, "I ain't going nowhere. You can lock me the (expletive) up. I ain't going to court," reports said. The officers struck him in the calf with a retractable baton and then took him into custody, reports said. While being processed, police found there was a warrant for Culbreath's arrest for failing to appear in court on another matter, but the police report did not say what that other matter was.

Monmouth St is notorious for being filthy and his store is in the heart of it! Once again, sorry for the grammar correction, I usually just stick to the issues but DAMN!!!

Good point about the undercover police JC. So would you say alot of what wearing the "street look" is about is wearing something that shows off how much money you have ($300 throwback jersey ) since you say they wear it in the summer because in other seasons they have to wear a jacket and no one sees it. It's also about wearing white t's to stay cool, even though MANY others are wearing the same thing and individual style goes out the window. Sounds a bit shallow and not very creative.

For the reasons listed above, I can understand why kids might wear the white t style in the summer, although I do think it does look a little silly when you see a large group all wearing them. But for the life of me I don't understand why kids and adults alike choose to wear heavy football jerseys in 90 degree heat...and it's not even football season!! Is it really worth wearing something thats considered "street style" if you have to sweat your ass off?

No. There are 2 reasons why the front of his store was clean: 1) Fulop and the JCIA threatened to fine him if he didn't put a can out front and clean up after his customers ( He had to be warned several times with follow up visits. Fulop even went twice and Frank finally complied reluctantly) 2) The majority of the mess makers are high school kids who frequent his business for lunch/ 5 days a week. SCHOOL IS ON SUMMER BREAK!!!

I have to agree, the front of his store was a pigsty for a very long time. It took a few promises of a fine from the JCIA just to get him to clean it up and put a garbage can out front for all the high school kids to throw their trash in. He allowed the children to throw trash all over the sidewalk and did nothing about it but take their money. He didn't give a damn about the trash in front of HIS business and how it affected his neighbors and other business, what make you think he'll give a damn about you?? Jaah

I think they have installed the wheelocks on some of the carts and it's having an effect. I walk to the path everyday from Brunswick (straight down Newark Ave) and have only spotted 1 cart, anyone else agree?

Eric, FYI, Bj's is taking action in a way that we are hoping IS a permanant solution. They are going to install an anti-theft wheel lock on 1 front and 1 back wheel of every cart. When the carts are rolled over an in ground sensor the wheels lock up prevent the carts from leaving the lot. We all must still be vigilant in calling BJ's whenevr we see a cart so they can pick them up. Thank-you for restating the numbers. Hopefully all these abandoned carts will be a thing of the past!! Maybe try contacting the JCIA and alert them to your corner's problem. Maybe they can send an inspector to keep watch for a week and fine the culprits. Not sure if they will do it but maybe you can work with them to find a solution. Just tring to help...

Thanks for the link ianmac47, looks like the word is getting out! We, the residents of downtown JC need to keep getting the word out and make everyone aware of this persistant problem. By working together we can keep this problem in the public eye, there is power in numbers!! We have to bring about a new way of thinking for our neighborhoods.... dumping shopping carts on our streets and sidewalks will NOT be tolerated. I think some people actually thinks having these carts all over is acceptable, like part of the urban landscape. Some people are probably so used to seeing them they almost DON'T even notice them!! Keep up the good fight eveyone! Jaah

Hi All,
I spoke with BJ's regional manager Mauro Amato about 2 weeks ago and he said they are going to install 1 front wheel anti-theft lock and 1 back wheel anti-theft lock on all there carts to prevent people from stealing their carts. When the 2 wheel lock carts are pushed over an in-ground sensor BOTH wheels will lock up preventing the carts from leaving their lot. He also said they tried single wheel locks but people would just tip the carts back, lifting the single front locked wheel off the ground, and then wheel the carts passed the sensors thus defeating the locks. Mauro seemed just as frustrated by the cart situation as we residents claiming that he has to pay someone $500 a week just to drive around in a truck to retrieve all BJ's carts. We should all place a follow up call to Mauro...here is his number:1-845-803-2208 Thanks, Jaah

Hi All,
Just a quick update...just walked home from PATH train (10pm) on Newark Ave and spotted no less than FOUR shopping carts!! FOUR!! When will residents and businesses stop allowing this to trash up their neighborhoods? It's seems like people will just take the cart and push it to someone elses corner so it won't be on theirs rather then deal with it and call up BJ's or the JCIA to come pick them up. Wake up people.
